Experience a 285 mile electric vehicle road trip from Los Angeles, California to Las Vegas, Nevada in a 2022 Tesla Model RWD on a cold spring morning.
The cold weather definitely affected the road trip in the beginning and what affected range even more was extremely hilly terrain between LA and Vegas.
Overall efficiency was 244 Wh/mi over 285 miles which is fairly good on a trip that required two supercharging stops in Barstow, California and Primm, Nevada.
The entire road trip took about 5 hours, including charging stops and gives a fair example of real world range between Los Angeles, California and Las Vegas, Nevada.
This video was filmed on March 31, 2023 between Los Angeles, California and Las Vegas, Nevada.

Charge at the High Roller when you're in Vegas from 4am to noon for $.11 a KW! cheaper than home!
That’s a great tip! Will do!
I love Tesla road trip videos!!
Me too!
Best video yet. Starting off with less than 100 percent was perfect. So many other Tesla LA to Vegas videos always have stops at Yermo and Baker, it was great to see other stations for once. 2 stops are perfect for a casual trip.
Glad you liked it! Our goal is to show realistic road trips. Thanks for the encouraging words. Please subscribe and help grow our channel and EV community.
Very helpful. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful! What part was helpful?
charging at 70 percent is the sweet spot
True
thanks for the video this helps me with my july 8 road trip to vegas my model 3 2022 with 262 miles per charge leaving san bernandino county.
Awesome. Stop when the trip planner says stop and you will do well!
Nice, well edited video. I am a new subscriber to your channel.
Thank you George!
love that you got the white interior ! love mine!
Right on!
Great video
Thanks Andrew. Please use my Tesla referral if you’re going to order a Tesla to receive a discount.
When i saw the video link, i was thinking you were going to try making the trip in one shot which i knew would not be possible. I wonder if the battery estimate factors in terrain since the Cajone Pass where you go over the mountains near San Bernadino, would definitely take some extra juice. And then there is the Baker Grade as you approach Nevada State Line.
haha. Typing that just made me remember that one street name south of Baker called Zzyzx.
One thing people need to keep in mind is this trip seems to be done in winter. During the summer most of the trip will likely be 100'f+. I've seen it upwards of 125'f in Baker, CA. Gotta have to blast the AC the whole drive.

I see how you quickly panned past the cannabis trailer. lol.
Driving my Audi, this trip takes around 4 hours if traffic is good. My record going from LA to Vegas was 3 hours 15 minutes. Yeah.... laws were fractured.
I think I would make it in one stop if I had a long range model 3. I’m much better at driving efficiently now compared to when this video was made.
Hope there is a part 2 because the ending left me hanging for more info about that charger.
There’s definitely more coming soon.
Did you watch part two yet?
Thanks for your helpful video. We own a 2021 Model Y, Performance edition, and just competed a 600 mile round trip to Paso Robles, CA. We experienced 2 minor day time "phantom braking" events. They are spooky...supposedly, when on cruise control in the night, the probability of a phantom braking incident increases. Also, on the was back we stropped at a Supercharger in Calabasas, 20 stalls, all of them busy..we got in after a short wait and we surprised of what we experienced. Our charge was limited to 60%....damn I was hoping for 80%, so I wouldn't have to make another charging stop on the way home...60%, damn. My "rule of thumb" Whatever the dash indicates as the maximum range, deduct about 30%, leaving a 50 to 70 mile buffer...now deduct that by 30&....so real world, 35 miles to 50 actual miles.
You don’t have to follow the charge limits, just swipe the screen to 100% that shows the limit and you can charge to 100%. Once you are plugged up you can charge to whatever percentage you want to.
20-30 percent sounds about right speed and hills dont help the milage to stay accurate .
Fun road trip. I still haven’t made that trek to Vegas from LA yet but I’m definitely planning to. I have the Model Y in the midnight blue color. Absolutely love it. So much fun to drive. It was cool to see the date of March 31st in your video because about four days earlier is when my Tesla was delivered to my driveway. Coming home from work to that beautiful car made that an incredible day! Looking forward to more of your videos and count me in as a new subscriber. ✌🏾
Awesome story. When you make your road trip to Vegas, just make sure you’re not in a hurry! You will enjoy it!
@@JohnWDavisMedia Definitely will take my time. I’m actually looking forward to the supercharger stops. That just adds to the adventure and probably makes road trippin safer 🤘🏾
Great real world range test video for rwd model 3?
Thank you Tony!
I know this is long after you posted this video, but the road noise can be easily taken out of these videos in post. It’s basically white noise and can be filtered out and would make for a more pleasant headphone experience!
Thanks for the suggestion. We will work on improving our audio quality.
I’m taking a trip to San Diego in October and contemplating if it’s feasible to rent a Tesla model three while I’m there. I’d like to take a road trip up to Los Angeles and over to Las Vegas while I’m there.
Yes. Just charge when it says charge and you can do it. The LA road trip will be much easier from San Diego than Las Vegas.
I can’t believe no one mentioned this on the comments I saw …
1) you have brutal elevation gains heading to Vegas . It does not even out going down .
2) the weather … cold equals heating the battery and cab which means power use. A lot more than cooling.
3) last … that time of the year the wind was blowing into you . Under your energy tab you should have seen all the negatives stacking against you .
You did not have flat ground and the weather was against you . Kind of hard to make your range . Plus I bet you were speeding . Been on that road . I remember average speed around there being well over 80! You get your best range below 70 .
The hotel bathroom was a good tip :) I’ll remember when I visit friends your way !
1. You are corrected. It definitely does not even out but it is manageable.
2. The weather was below optimal, agreed.
3. The wind is often a factor.
Bonus: I'm glad you enjoyed the tip.
You should've warmed your battery up before charging
Agreed. Will do that next time.
Good video! How has tire tread been for you? I was a little surprised at my first rotation at 5k
To be honest, I haven’t paid much attention to the tread. I rarely accelerate hard. I’ll be doing my rotation soon. I’ll keep everyone updated.
@@JohnWDavisMedia sounds good! I’ll be on the lookout. 👍🏻
Love the car! Did you experience any phantom breaking events while driving in auto pilot?
I did not.
Are you planning to get tints or any accessories for your vehicle?
Only if someone wants to send them to me.
Rivian's charge at about 200kw/h. they have a respectable charging curve and with the addition of the Tesla charging connector they will have a solid charging network by 2025.
That’s cool. Thanks for sharing.
Hi John W Davis I’ll be changing careers soon. Planning on getting Tesla model 3 after seeing how my job goes after a few months. My problem is that my town i live in has no public charging for us that own our own town house. I live 28 miles from work. Is it still worth getting a Tesla model 3. Or just keep my gas car for long term. My new company I will work for possibly has charging stations on site.
Great question. If you can charge at home and work, even with a regular outlet, you should be fine.
Did you drive in eco mode or normal mode on this trip?
Great question. Drove is normal mode. Didn’t not use chill mode on this trip.
Where is the summary? LOL. Costs?
Is that something you expect to see at the end of the video?
@@JohnWDavisMedia Yes, that is what most reviews do. I had no idea how much you spent, cost/kwh or anything. No critical info.
@@seaplaneguy1you should enjoy this video better! Lots of details. czcams.com/video/Nv0lP5eigQY/video.html
I like to say that gas in Saudi is cheaper than your tesla charge
Most of us don’t live there but thanks for sharing that fact.
Can you please reach out to me I will tell you thereabout Tesla's

@@JohnWDavisMedia can you please reach out to me about Tesla, I'm looking into seeing if I can afford a Tesla I told my Dad who's in the car business in the next year I want to transition into an all electric car 🚘.
