Catch that filtered water and reuse it. They release a pheromone in the water which helps attract more egg laying mosquitoes. Some species have a life cycle of only four days so keep a close eye on them til you are familiar with the life cycle and how it can get quicker with higher temperatures.

I am rooting a Christmas cactus and just found a bunch of mosquito larvae in the water. this was In my house! glad I found them before they hatched! I guess what I'm trying to say is these nasty bugs are going to lay eggs anywhere and if you provide the place for them you ARE controlling some of thier population. Thanks for the video, enjoy

If you come across water you can't drain out, a simple few drops of oil, any kind, on the water will suffocate them. They'll come up for air and as soon as they hit the oil they go crazy trying to break the surface tension but they can't.

Great trap. I use a bucket of water to attract them too. I prefer the mosquito dunks though. They last 30 days and kills a lot of Larvae. To get good results start early in the season and use all summer.

Larvae are air breathing so they don't die "instantly". Best thing would be to submerge that filter cloth with the larvae for some time in boiling water to kill them off.Otherwise it's a really excellent thing what you are doing.

This video would be better if the narrative reflected what happens if the conditions are right for mosquitoes to continue their life cycle and the dangers of standing water.
Depending on species, female mosquitoes lay between 100 and 200 eggs and live between two to four weeks. The female can breed, seek blood from hosts, and lay eggs multiple times until they die. The aquatic stages of a mosquito can last from 5 to 14 days and not all species of mosquitoes have eggs that hatch at the same time. Many of these factors are dependant on temperature and other conditions.
If just 1 or 2 of those mosquitoes survive your "trap" or enter the adult stage before you empty the bucket, you are perpetuating the problem. It would be best to find other ways to combat the mosquito problem.

    • @sousababyonSquidoo

This is the worst possible advice. Prior to laying eggs, female mosquitoes take a blood meal (from you or the pregnant lady next door).
Then, she lays eggs in your bucket.
You dump it (thinking it will kill the eggs and/or larvae and any disease they carry).
BUT, Zika can live for 5 days in a dead host and Wolbachia for (at least a week).
Who is going to watch over the eggs and larvae you dump on the ground for a week (day and night) to ensure birds and other species do not consume them and pass the diseases and bacteria along to other organisms?

      @you2tooyou2too Před 4 lety +2

A "mosquito dunk" is a cake of microbic mosquito parasites that when activated in water, clog the guts of the male & female nymphs, which then die before the females can mature into blood suckers. if you can 'contaminate' the rainwater before it flows into the mosquito nurseries, most of the nymphs will not survive.

It's the easiest way to get rid of the mosquito's, than wait for the larvae to turn into mosquito's and then eradicate them. By going about your idea it makes sense. Only thing to be vigilant about is the timing. Nice video. Thanks for sharing. Regards...

Rose Webster Can you stop spreading such utter garbage? For one, there is no actual evidence that either of these diseases can be spread via ingestion. In fact, there's no evidence that these diseases can be transmitted to you if you handle or ingest an infected animal at all.
Two: Okay, say that I'm wrong, and that these viruses can be transmitted via ingestion. Here's a good work around: Discard their waste in a bag or box, or burn them until they are but ashes. This ensures that they are thoroughly dead.
As for your "pregnant woman" case, female mosquitoes rest for a few days before laying, and mosquitoes do not only feed on humans (though some species find us most preferable.) Not only that, this is mostly just garbage, too, mostly because its just an appeal to emotion, and not actual fact. I don't live by pregnant women to my knowledge, and not only that, this assumes this woman isn't taking precautions already. Pregnant people aren't exactly just vulnerable people who always need protecting. And honestly, I care more about extermination than worrying about if Becky down the block went outside to run around 6 pm without mosquito spray wearing reds and blacks.

Your not the sharpest tool in the shed are you? So you purposely create an environment for mosquitos to lay eggs, kill the larve and think your some kind of genius for doing so. This is the most obserd thing I've seen in awhile.

Gary Calcote If he didn't do this, they would've laid their eggs somewhere else. By doing this, he can effectively kill a lot of larvae in one spot, decreasing the population in the area.

As far as not being the sharpest tool, it's absurd, not "obserd". PuaThePig nailed it. At least someone gets it.

Yes, this is the worst possible advice.

Surely you're just allowing them to breed when you leave the bucket out? Just dont leave a bucket full of water or any stagnant water about !? Surely? 🪣
