reading some comments and thought about what I just found. I am rooting a Christmas cactus and just found a bunch of mosquito larvae in the water. this was In my house! glad I found them before they hatched! I guess what I'm trying to say is these nasty bugs are going to lay eggs anywhere and if you provide the place for them you ARE controlling some of thier population. Thanks for the video, enjoy
If you come across water you can't drain out, a simple few drops of oil, any kind, on the water will suffocate them. They'll come up for air and as soon as they hit the oil they go crazy trying to break the surface tension but they can't.
Great trap. I use a bucket of water to attract them too. I prefer the mosquito dunks though. They last 30 days and kills a lot of Larvae. To get good results start early in the season and use all summer.
Larvae are air breathing so they don't die "instantly". Best thing would be to submerge that filter cloth with the larvae for some time in boiling water to kill them off.Otherwise it's a really excellent thing what you are doing.
This video would be better if the narrative reflected what happens if the conditions are right for mosquitoes to continue their life cycle and the dangers of standing water. Depending on species, female mosquitoes lay between 100 and 200 eggs and live between two to four weeks. The female can breed, seek blood from hosts, and lay eggs multiple times until they die. The aquatic stages of a mosquito can last from 5 to 14 days and not all species of mosquitoes have eggs that hatch at the same time. Many of these factors are dependant on temperature and other conditions. If just 1 or 2 of those mosquitoes survive your "trap" or enter the adult stage before you empty the bucket, you are perpetuating the problem. It would be best to find other ways to combat the mosquito problem.
This is the worst possible advice. Prior to laying eggs, female mosquitoes take a blood meal (from you or the pregnant lady next door). Then, she lays eggs in your bucket. You dump it (thinking it will kill the eggs and/or larvae and any disease they carry). BUT, Zika can live for 5 days in a dead host and Wolbachia for (at least a week). Who is going to watch over the eggs and larvae you dump on the ground for a week (day and night) to ensure birds and other species do not consume them and pass the diseases and bacteria along to other organisms?
Tech OverUsa if they’re not laying their eggs in your yard then they’re laying them somewhere else, and then those live long enough to fly into your yard.
That's the idea, provide a controlled breeding habitat so that you can kill them before they can grow into adult biters. A wasting of the mosquitoes eggs. Simple.
I think this is smart way help get rid of some mosquitoes. I've done this and it's natural way kill mosquitoes, eliminating a step in their reproductive cycle. I wish this method was perfected, and taught as another approach to reducing mosquitoes. What's added to the water to more readily attract mosquitoes to lay eggs??
A "mosquito dunk" is a cake of microbic mosquito parasites that when activated in water, clog the guts of the male & female nymphs, which then die before the females can mature into blood suckers. if you can 'contaminate' the rainwater before it flows into the mosquito nurseries, most of the nymphs will not survive.

In fact, there's no evidence that these diseases can be transmitted to you if you handle or ingest an infected animal at all.
