when I was a young teen, my aunts boyfriend at the time "Damon" had a paseo. The front fender paint was peeling, the car was silver but the passenger door was black, and the rear wheel wells had rust holes big enough to put a finger through. He had it straight piped, and put a hilariously massive spoiler on it, the kind of spoiler that has cables criss-crossed to keep it stable.
Damon himself was exactly the man you would expect to be driving such a car. Pushing 40 but still had the attitude of a 16 year old. His receding hairline pulled back into a pony tail, an attempt at a goatee, and an oversized black t-shirt that he thought made him look like Steven Seagal, who he worshipped as the peak of manliness. Damon drove that car a little too fast everywhere, had about three different radar detectors, and never wore his seatbelt 'in case he had to bail'.
As you can tell, my aunt had fantastic taste in men.

When I saw that the subject was the Toyota Paseo, I unintentionally let out an orgasmic "ugh!"
I love this little car, and the "economy coupe" segment as a whole. I firmly believe, if we think about it with total honesty, it's the best type of vehicle for most peoples' daily driving habits. And I will argue that point to anyone anywhere.
A couple years ago, I had a neighbor with a teal 2nd gen Paseo with light grey cloth interior, and I couldn't stop looking at it, because I realized that, even though I drive a much nicer car today, I could be perfectly content if that was my daily driver.

@@illegal_space_alien it wasn't uncommon for the company to have a hotter version. Most people bought the commuter engine, and the hot one becomes a collector item. So it's not inconceivable, had the car been Civic/Corolla popular. In Europe, there was usually a middle engine option, typically a diesel, that offered the best of both worlds.

The Paseo might be forgettable overall, but I'll never forget it. When I was little, my dad had one. It was black, it was manual and we would go to the grocery store in it and listen to cassettes of The Clash. I thought it was the coolest thing ever. Then one time it had an unfortunate run-in with some sudden flood waters and it was gone. Dad died last year, rather suddenly, and now I find myself seeking out things that make me think of him. So it was a lot of fun to watch this video and see the little old Paseo again. Thank you for what you do!

The contenders were my w123 300D, a V6 automatic mustang convertible, and a very very VERY beat to shit Toyota Paseo. It became a rule that if we found each other while driving we would have to at least lightly hit each other while driving... good times. Ultimately the Paseo was the only one that blew up before it was junked. Being that his car already had power assisted nothing, rather than tow it to the junk yard i pushed him the 5 miles through town with the w123 panzer. Good times... garbage car.

About 15-16 years ago I remember hiring on a new dude at work to help me with some IT stuff and customer service, fresh out of high school, smart at a button and had been given his mum's Paseo. Without fail at knock off time it was nearly always refusing to work for some reason or another and I suppose to the rubbish POS credit I could usually get it running for him with nothing more than basic tools, WD40 and beatings. Like any car owned by a single mum with no XY parental unit in the family, it had literally never been maintained in well over 12 years by that stage 'because it mostly just kept working' when the road service guy would come out and presumably do the same things I did to it
They really are just that bad
Thing I never really understood was just how bloody pointless the whole package was, its too small for anyone but the most stunted manlets, slower than a turtle with a hardon over broken glass and not enough space for much more than a small dog and a couple of overnight bags. The rest is just a mess of crap suspension, basic bitch everything and completely awful.

i don't think anybody still reading comments under two years old rcr videos, but i just have to make one. i drive 94 tercel el41 3 doors hatch, japanese model, mechanically it's almost identical to the cynos/paseo, and i love it from the bottom of my heart. it is the happiest car i drove, ever, the lightness, the suspension setup, balance, and, yeah, complete lack of power, makes it fun all the time, my commute is the highlight of the day, i kid you not. as years go by the maintenance and little repairs becoming less trivial, if i ever need to change a headlight i would have to ship it from japan or at least from another part of the country, but at the end of the day I'm happy to catch the tail of that era of cars, cheap, reliable, horribly unsafe (mine has exactly zero airbags), efficient little machines that we won't have again, for that I'm grateful, and I'll try my best to keep it on the road as long as i can

The Paseo fit into that faux sports car category with the Honda Del Sol and they Hyundai Scoupe. It's an economy car for people who don't want many passengers.
I see quite a few Honda Del Sols that have half of the Advance auto accessory trinkets aisle and most of a JC Whitney catalog added to them much like the Paseos (the Hyundai Scoupes ended up in the crusher years ago).

My Dad had a 95 Paseo Convertible. He found it at a local used car place, and it had been very well loved to that point, other than the ragtop. Dad found a shop that he had the top redone in a camel cover, and the body was black. He had the seats recovered in the camel color as well. It was a very sharp little car, and Dad definitely called it his mid-life crisis. Pros, it was sharp. It was fun to drive. Cons, it desperately needed a sixth gear. You'd get into 5th, and just needed something else to get it over the top, especially in the mountains where we live.
