In November 1963, our family moved north to Pineville, then later, further north, and an hour west of Shreveport, into Texas. I still have some fond memories of my early years in Kaplan, and the school classmates I left behind.

      Kaplan is a small town in southern Louisiana, it is named for Abrom Kaplan who bought the property in the early 1900's. Nathan worked and lived in nearby Gueydan. The song lyrics changed a lot through the decades but mostly refer to a girl (the love of the singer) going away and if she goes too long he worries that he will not want her to return. It's very heartwrenching and sad.

    A) this does not per-date blues.
    B) it isn't even blues... it's a simple two-step waltz.
    And very good it is too.

    • @stbricesday
      @stbricesday  Před 6 lety

      Hi Dave, it is lovely! Well, I believe that it does, the Blues is late 19th c at the very earliest and most likely manifested in the 1920's. This song is Acadian and predates that by half a century, at least in this form, I don't believe that French Canadians lived without music or did not take it to Louisiana. I never said it was a blues tune, I know my waltzes. I do believe Cajun music, existing in a well preserved form, is one of many examples of how music actually progressed into the modern era through many sources. From my experience only, I'd guess that it is possible, in this case, that this beautiful song is derived from a Creole tune, but I often show parallels to support the fact that modern music, rock and roll etc., has holartic origin. xx

    • @jimtrahan2800
      @jimtrahan2800 Před 6 lety +1

      Strange...I always thought two-steps and waltzes are two different types of music, given that there are a number of Cajun two-steps which are definitely NOT waltzes. Silly me. LOL

      It most certainly does, I forget the origin and will post it here when I remember or find it again. For the toon derives from an much earlier Cajun song. Sorry, you are wrong, Cajun music derives from Acadian and predates the blues by many decades in it's style..
