For those who don't speak French... At the end, he's explaining that "negresse" is a term of endearment you'd say to your wife like "negresse, grab me a cup of coffee," and it's a sign you love her. If you just called her "hey you," it would be as if you didn't love her!

He was a good musician back in the days. One of my friends played a gig with him. He told me "Nathan would get really drunk, but one night he fell on the floor with his accordion and still could play it"

I knew Nathan Abshire I grew up in Basile louisana..home of Dewey Balfa who let me play some gigs with him as his way of encouraging me ...I love that guy he was a real pure Cajun artist promoted wonderful Cajun music....Nathan and believe Mr.Dewey. played at the frontier lounge..bearcat lounge. Brecks, the and the famous Rundevou...on hwy 190...were the pine grove boys many local Cajun bands and played frequently... I listened to the wondweful Cajun thru the back doors and the open windows.. there was no air conditioning..i was way too young to go into a bar but I found a way....I spent my life playing music and im proud to have returned to my native region... Cajun Music and zydeco have a way of reaching your soul and making you dance the happy dance....

Leadbelly sang "black girl black girl" in his version so that's one of several traditional variations to the song. I wouldn't dare argue with Mr. Abshire on Cajun slang though, so if he says thats how the word is used I believe him.

The Pine Grove was the dance hall in Evangeline LA where Nathan and his group played. The band name and song title come from that. The text and the melody have nothing to do with the song In the Pines, though I have even seen that misinformation on Wikipedia. I learned this from Terry Clement, on whose family property the Pine Grove was situated.

Actually listening again I think he sings "Tu vas pas t'en acheter, non", which makes more sense (tho he's still in charge) ... Definitely a suspicious song (like 'In the pines' / 'Where did you sleep last night?' which it's kind of a version of), tho in the recorded versions the last line is 'ça m'fait d'la peine pour toi', which makes things a bit more plaintive overall. Btw in the studio recordings you can make out his gf's responses to his questions properly (altho I love this version).

Hey Scrambler390 - I enjoy this music a lot, but I have never got the hang of 'Cajun French. I'm from Thibodaux, mind you, but ... not actually of 'Cajun descent. And I took French in college, which still doesn't help me much with 'Cajun.
Anyway, I have a question for you: Where can I find the lyrics to this and other 'Cajun songs? If they are printed out in French, I might be able to catch the meaning. If in both French and English, all the better.
Can you help me find those lyrics?
