  • In todays video we are putting the plaster additives to the test, facing them off against each other to find out exactly which plaster retarder and which plaster accelerator is best.
The two brands we are putting to the test are Speedy Set and Eazymix.
Speedyset have a plaster retarder called Slow Set and a plaster accelerator called Speedy Set.
Likewise, Eazymix have a plaster retarder called Extratime and a plaster accelerator called Halftime.
In this video we preform two tests, test one is a speed test, this will determine the efficacy of each additive in relation to eachother and to the control. Test two is a strength test, this will determine the effect of the additives on the final strength of the plaster.
Also feel free to use this video as a tutorial guide on how to use additives.

Speedy set every time not only does it strengthen the plaster it makes it exceptionally nice to work with I know this because I've tested them , it's a must have in the van !!!

I’ve been a plasterer for 18 years I actually got sent samples of both products to use and review, and I can say I think speedyset and slowset win hands down ,
It makes the plaster so creamy and nice to work with has fibres for strength to help prevent cracking
And takes all the greasyness out of the multi .. so I’m defo team speedyset .. use it all the time now

It's good stuff, I couldn't really show the consistency difference in the test but if I had, speedy would have won that for sure

Fair play mate, confirmed for me what i already knew but thanks for taking all that time to make the video.
Halftime and Extratime by Eazymix mix work best in both situations. Halftime sets faster when you need it to and extratime sets slower when you need it to. So in my opinion they are better than the competition as they actually do what they say on the tin 🤷🏻‍♂️
Little side note plaster setting faster doesn't weaken it... drying out to fast is what does.
Also the plasterer continues to harden over a time so the slow sets that looked weaker would of just been the same strength the next day given more time.
Think how fast a plaster cast sets when you use pure gypsum?
Well British gypsum actually use retarders to make multifinish otherwise it would set within a few minutes.
My conclusion is... if you throw snooker balls at your walls then you will get dents.
If i want to accelerate a set then halftime works best, and if i want to slow it down then extratime is the winner.
I don't like the ideas of adding fiber because it can cause issues when trying to feather the plasterer out when patching.
I will be staying with the original and best Eazymix products.
Oh its worth mentioning the same company also make
    Halftime for bonding
    Halftime for adhesive
    Extratime for cement
Thanks again for the video, keep up the great work 👌

Is strength in your work not important then ? Our tests as well as this above test show, in both cases , Slowset and Speedyset out performed halftime and extratime by a substantial amount The setting times were marginal hr more or hr less than nioral plaster setting . If you wanted a quicker set just add more of our product , we can set Gypsum in less than 30 mins on patches ...WITH NO ILL EFFECT or weakness , more you add the quicker it sets . .
Its worth mentioning that out speedyset works on ALL gypsum based plaster - no need for silly numerous bags .
Speedyset will work on Drywall / Bonding/ Hardwall / multi finish / unicoat /boardfinish / universal one coat etc. it even works on some gypsum based tile adhesives . All of these without weakening the end product !

I would imagine extra time or slowset would be great for someone learning. I will say the tricky bit will be knowing when the plaster is ready for each trowel. You will have to be patient if using a retarder, but it will be a good way of buying a bit more time!

I think my test did show that the speedy set products were stronger and more durable despite the flaws in the test. That said it also did show that the eazymix products do work faster and slower (depending of the product) than the speedy ones.
