Thank you for making this video. Being in academic research costs lot of sacrifice and hard work, even after that no guarantee of anything. Being a graduate student the more deep i go i realize that we are just an affordable scientists in the academia.
Yes. It happened to me and my wife during my PhD. Now I had finished my PhD at home (I had to re start) and I can’t find jobs here so I’m thinking going overseas again for a postdoctoral position … this is crazy I don’t know what to do.
I have watched quite a number of your inspiring videos....I see a complex situation in finding a balanced postdoc: 1. Finding the 'right' institute for my field or research interest. 2. Finding the 'right' PI (neither too young nor too old in the field). 3. Balancing the location of these two with location/city where cost of living is bearable. I am currently in the second year of my PhD and these are what cross my mind time and again. The paradox is, most established institutions and PIs are in big/expensive cities.
Absolute words these are! Exactly the time am thinking to switchover...academia pays very less .and at least in Korea it varies between National universities to other institutions!
All sweet talk aside, would you tell your pre post doc self to just go ahead and go to industry? Thank you. Loved the video! And the honesty. God bless you
@@gradschooladvice9537 I'm not sure. I live your channel because of your honesty and it's helping me a lot. I'm I'm 4th and final year phd student with an opportunity to go do a post doc at an awesome lab with a great PI in my field next fall 2022. However I work in a hospital and already make pretty good money and have always wanted to be an author for my health books. I'm worried that if I do a post doc I'll miss my window to write my books while I'm young (27) and to try and make it big. I'm also worried if I don't do a post doc that I'll miss out on a lot of opportunities also. All good opportunities but tough to make these choices. Would love your input or advice man! Thank you doc
Really good content. Could you talk about what kind of study that may be popular/easy to get a position as a new PI? And what kind of research that may have a good future as a postdoc? Currently, as far as I know, data science/ biostatistics are becoming more and more popular, how do you think of that in the academic area? How do you think about translational research? Thanks!
It's ridiculous how so many brilliant minds have to live with such limitations in that exceedingly prestigious institution.

Completely agree.

You are right on that. There are top tier schools in cheaper locales though. Duke, University of Michigan, etc.
That's very helpful. Thanks
Thank you

I wouldn’t. I learned a lot of valuable lessons along the way. I believe the journey is just as important as the destination. What do you think?

Good question and can answer in a video.

Hi coco!
Hello, I have PhD student and I'm living in Morocco, how can i get a postdocs and visa to USA or Canada?
Thank you
Need to find a lab/university that will support visas. Typically, you can come on a J visa for work for a few years before needing to move to an H1B.
Could you make a video about professorship in Switzerland/USA and the differences between both, please? Thank you!
I will have to look into information about Switzerland. I’m not very familiar with it.
