Thank you - that really helped. I´m scarred of leaving my old lab and start in a new one as a postdoc, but your realistic view really helped.

Nice video. As summary of your thoughts, I would say that for postdocs, almost all is reduced to have high degree of independency by respect to their mentors. I mean, left behind the paternalistic view, in which one naively think that PI's are altruistic like an "academic father/mother". As postdoc you offer your services to a PI, and if you fail to provide this service, you will not have successful like in any other non-academic job. Now you are in the real world.

Thank you so much for another great video. Please keep up the good work. It really helps us out. I have a question that is not really related to this topic. Does the NIH pay scale for a postdoc (e.g: 54k$ during the 1st year) is after or before the income taxes have been removed? How much money does a 1st-year Postdoc get in his bank account per month?

It is pre-tax. So income tax and others will be removed from that. Typically, you will also need to do health insurance etc as well. Plan on keeping 60% of the total gross salary. So for a $54k a year salary, you will have a gross of $4,500 a month, and ~$2,700 after tax per month. This is a really rough estimate. You should consult with a financial planner or accountant for real advice.

umm is there some overseeing in the PhD experiments? Im just in here alone with a lot of broken equipment and old supplies. Expected to come up with some papers of the experiments I designed in a few years, it sounds like the same as postdoc

Hey, my friend! Great video as usual! I have a question for you, that maybe can become a video: how is it to write a paper as a team? I haven't had this experience as a Ph.D. student, and now pp are inviting me to collaborate and I have no clue on how to set parameters as co-authorship X iime invested. Is it something we decide in the beginning? Is the one who work in data analysis always the 1st author? Is this dynamic the same during Ph.D. studies, postdoc, and when someone u don't know send you an email asking for collaboration? Can you please share your experiences with us? Thanks a lot!!!!!

This is a major part of "work politics" in academia. I would say, depends upon your relationship with the other co authors. And it's always better to ask about authorship for the paper upfront for someone else's project that you are gonna work.
