This is an excellent video I am presently pursuing a postdoc in the US and my contract for the visa renewal is going to end in 4 months and I don't want to continue in the same lab there are many reasons for slow publication, PI is toxic in short things aren't working fine shall I try another lab and will it be a negative impression for the lab that I am applying. Also I moved before from one lab (out of my field) to this lab, there I was for a year
would bve nice to show in on a powerpoint slides to see how it is goes for instance.,
I like all your video a lot
helpful thanks
How to convince the other PI why you wanna switch ?? Should you tell directly? Or make some different excuses that will not harm PI's image and your as well?? Im a PhD fellow, been 3 months only and my PI says on the result of my first experiment .. what are these image? Are these worth to publish?? Like its a new field for me and i am doing my best and i am getting result in my learning experiment...but he only finds the wrongs in it why it is over developed, why there is no cells , there is no progress and all...even though i can see progress in my work... How should i deal with it...
What's the criteria to select postdoc candidates for interview stage? I have a phD from an Egyptian university and have publications as well ? Am i have a chance to join postdoc in American or European university ?
Hi: guys. How difficult to get postdoc opportunity in North America? I just completed my PhD in bioinformatics. Thanks in advance!
Money?
Great video! ✨✨✨✨✨
Thank you so much
Thank you for sharing your insights. This is a nice video.
Yes. It happened to me and my wife during my PhD. Now I had finished my PhD at home (I had to re start) and I can’t find jobs here so I’m thinking going overseas again for a postdoctoral position … this is crazy I don’t know what to do.
Hi, nice to see you here on youtube
Can you please suggest how to get a postdoc position at Harvard and its affiliated institutes?
Thank you so much. Much needed this today. You mentioned the publication, should it be necessarily 1st author paper??. It's 7 months after I joined, and I got a paper as 3rd author, is it okay???.
Remember that doesn't apply to most of PhDs. He is talking about ideal world. Most PhDs get no help whatsoever.
Everyone responded to your emails? For me it has been 95% radio silence, maybe 5% "no" responses, none interested. Computational biology, 12 decent publications, top 100 PhD, but nothing yet for 8 months.
Supreme excellence in attaining highest academia position (a professor) consists in breaking the enemy's university academia system without doing any actual scientific work.
TIL my PhD was actually a postdoc.
PI = principal investigator = manages a research grant
Do: 1. Ask a lot of questions 2. Meet new people outside your lab, broaden horizon 3. Shadow 4.Read a lot 5. Find extra 1 to 1 time with PI.
Can you tell us about how to write a how to structure a concise postdoc research proposal of a one page length?
Thank you for your thoughtful advice
There are a lot of industry postdoc positions that allow to easily go back to academia. Genentech is a great example of this
I keep getting rejections by selected universities in which I saw unpleasant behaviors, every fridays. I was thinking if it could be a form of harassment as it demonstrates a pattern of behavior?
My biggest regret in life.
Funny. I do 2 usually but as an email not as a covletter. Still got nothing. A girl had a copycat of my cv just fewer qualifications and got the position as internal applicant and younger so less experience too. I didn't understand it. Some just hire younger for the sake of hiring. I have worked with great younger people or older so I don't get it and also bad of either. I don't think age determines how good you will be. Some are just looking to date 😂 in that case I'm glad I didn't get hired.
I am also facing the same problem. I am writing everything on the email directly instead of a separate cover letter, but still it is all the same - no response
❤
Thank you for sharing this video 👍
Sir, Very good information but I , believe the role of Creative Mentor is crucial in guiding, P D, student in respects. Thank you for your amazing content! A PI said to me something like: "I currently do not have funding for a Postdoc position but would be happy to support you finding funds." What should I do?
I couldn't thank you enough for your great video!
Simple: Do look out for other career paths. Don't plan on staying for more than 5 years, max.
Thankyou so much 💓 they are really great points
Thank you for the great video!
Some will only leave academia feet first and dead.
Hi! I have just landed on your channel! I loved your video where you talk about transitioning from academia to industry. I would love to know more about your experience both as a postdoc but also as a postdoc transitioning to industry. Can I ask you an email or something? Thank you so much for your time! And amazing helpful videos!
Its really hard not to be intimidated by the PI and stay suffering, dont do that it will not get better
Amazing advice..thanks a lot
CZcams just recommended me your channel and I watched most of the videos again. Really good content, you should really start posting againg, Dr. Darcy!
umm is there some overseeing in the PhD experiments? Im just in here alone with a lot of broken equipment and old supplies. Expected to come up with some papers of the experiments I designed in a few years, it sounds like the same as postdoc
Thank you for this
good video to try and tell good PIs. Can you just ask them about turnover or is that taboo?I only met with the lab manager not the PI
Thank you so much for the information. I have the experience of 1 year in an industry and in academia after completing my PhD. How to summarize this much of experience in 10 min presentation. I am bit worried for my upcoming interaction with the prospective lab.
Thanks for sharing this! I hope everyone applying for a postdoc gets to take a look at this - really conveys the key points needed for a cover letter!!
Do you have any advice on how I might be able to develop those critical thinking skills? I am a masters student right now and struggling with critical thinking
Thank you!!!!!
Thank you for all the great advice. They are super helpful to me as I just started my first postdoc in a very different topic from my PhD, and was dealing with similar issues.
Industry is better for the income for sure. The only problem is that many of the inductrinated toxic people from academia get into industry and start creating and spreading toxic culture.
I learned about many things in my PhD program but for the most part what I got out of the program was not the biomedical sciences PhD level research education that I was looking for. I learned mostly about the nature of people ( good and bad). I learned about toxic cultures, politics, inductrination, manipulation, exploitation, racisim, hate, scare tactics, fraud. I learned that for some reason PhDs and MD's within an institute don't get along and don't collaborate. I learned that in academia they are focused on grants, power and politics and not education of students in the field of study that the students joined the program to gain expertese in. I also learned that most students who join PhD programs are very trusting and get manipulated easily by evil faculty and PI's, because those students dont have the basic scientific mindset to question things, investigate things and analyze things to determine if what they are being told is true or not. I learned that although academia is mostly super toxic, there are still some good people sprinkled among the many evil people. I left academia and dropped out of my PhD because of all the overwhelming negative things that I experienced in the program, but the experience did open my eyes, and it was a learning experience.
