- First aired on BBC1 in 1979, Jazz, Rock and Marriage is a fascinating double profile of Barbara Thompson, classically trained jazz instrumentalist and her husband, self-taught rock drummer Jon Hiseman. Mike Dibb’s film of their life, careers and music, finds them at home and on the road, including the Bracknell Jazz Festival performance.
Barbara Thompson is a slender, genteel-looking blonde who plays the saxophone, heads Paraphernalia -a band of male musicians (including her husband Jon Hiseman) -writes their music and combines this with bringing up a young family…Other women with out-of-the-rut aspirations will find encouragement in an hour-long programme about her lifestyle, “Jazz Rock and Marriage.” Daily Express, 15th December 1979 - Hudba
R.I.P. Barbara Thompson (1944-2022). Your work and your importance for the music will remain unforgotten. Despite the illness you played for your fans for so long. Thanks for everything, you stay in our hearts as do Jon and Dick! I feel so sorry for Marcus and Anna.
Dick?
Seeing this again brought me a great deal of joy. Still can’t believe Jon has gone. A huge inspiration for.me, from when I first saw him play in 1969. RIP
I remember watching this at the time. 16 years old, it was a nice education. I saw Paraphernalia a couple of times shortly after that. Great stuff and good to see again.
‘Stairways’ - one of my all time favourites. I asked Barbara Thompson to play this for me decades ago, before a ‘Paraphernalia’ concert, at the Nottingham Playhouse, and she obliged. I first saw her in 1979 when I was seventeen, with “Jubiaba” - a fabulous Latin set up, and it changed my life forever. Thank you for so much Barbara Thompson. You have been in my thoughts since your incredible husband, so sadly died last year. I’ve been trying to see this documentary unsuccessfully, for many years until now.
Stairways will be performed at her memorial concert on 2nd June. Hope to see you there.
Over the last 10 - 15 years I have searched for this and finally here it is, thank you thank you thank you. I saw this when it was first broadcast and it inspired me to play the sax. Wonderful.
Saw this first time , wonderful to see again.
Missed this first time round, for some reason even though have always been a fan of Colosseum and Paraphernalia. Four great musicians at the top of their game . Fantastic stuff.
This is abolutely brilliant, Mr. Hiseman. Thanks for uploading!
Maybe you didn't know, but...I really sad to say, that Jon Hiseman passed away this year. To lots of music-lovers he left a gap, that might never be filled again...
Thank you so much for posting this video about a period of Paraphernalia long ago.
I am happy to have seen them in those days and more lately a couple of years ago and I will always remember them with kindness. Thank you, Barabara to authorize this document.
