  • Hello, and welcome back to the channel!
    The Celebration of Lights has been Vancouver's busiest nights for around 30 years now, but for transit spotters like this channel, it's a frenzy for bus photography and videography. In this video, we managed to squeeze out 15 minutes of SkyTrain action at Waterfront before it literally got way too busy! Watch as trains leave Downtown sardine can after sardine can! Enjoy!

    Automated light metro at its finest. Cant wait for those Mark Vs to come in and boost capacity even more.

    Key things for high frequencies (in no particular order): 1. Lots of wide doors to allow for fast boarding and disembarking. This reduces dwell time and allows you to squeeze more trains in. 2. Having a steady supply of trains to fill the platform as soon as another leaves. This means that the platform is being used fully. 3. Having an advanced signalling system which allows the gap between trains to be reduced. Although you can achieve high frequencies with more legacy signalling systems, it's a lot harder. 4. Efficient use of the platform space. This means that the full length of the platform is used and passengers are able to use all of the doors to make boarding faster. 5. Separated boarding and deboarding areas (at terminus stations). This means that passengers getting on don't have to wait for passengers to get off. 6. High quality right of way with few interruptions/interactions with other traffic. This means no level crossings, lots of flying junctions where tracks diverge and merge, and absolutely NO pedestrian crossings at stations!

    Wow legacy cars still running in legacy livery. Is that for historic recognition or did they just not get around to all the old cars by the time of filming?

    • @jmstransit
      @jmstransit  Před 6 měsíci +1

      When wrapping a car in the updated livery costs $4000 it’s more cost effective to run these with fullwrap adverts or banner ads (hence why they remain in legacy paint).
      The historic recognition is unintended but sometimes there will be a 6-car train with three liveries and no ads - always a treat and fun to see.

    13:37 everyone crams into the first 2 cars but then the next 4 are nearly empty

      The following four cars were allocated to those boarding at Burrard/Granville.

    Why do the trains flash their head/tail lights right after they stop before opening the doors? For example at 1:10.

    • @jmstransit
      @jmstransit  Před rokem

      That would be a reset of the onboard computers, signalling that the train is headed in the reverse direction.
      It also happens elsewhere such as at Edmonds Station in the eastbound direction where there is a Boundary between communication channels.

    Did COVID cancel it the last 2 years? If the trains are automated how will the train know when the close the doors. I mean you don't people getting squished in the doors because they just close on their own

    • @jmstransit
      @jmstransit  Před rokem +4

      1) COVID canceled the 2020 and 2021 celebrations.
      2) The trains can detect themselves when the doors are closed. When there is a repetition of doors being held open (I think 5 or 6 times) the train is held and to my knowledge an attendant is summoned on scene to deal with the issue. The time the train spends at the platform is also calculated, and the purpose of the door chime is to let everyone know that the doors are closing.

      How do you think elevators detect people caught in the door if they are automated?

  • @ketch_up
    @ketch_up Před rokem +1

    Two minute headways is not impressive for skytrain. The system is capable of cycling through trains at more than twice this rate.

    • @Tpcool
      @Tpcool Před rokem

      Yeah this looks like usual peak Expo line service to me. It can theoretically have headways as short as just over a minute, right?
