Your videos are great, the multiple channels don't confuse me. I subbed them all because I don't want to miss ANY content from you, regardless what it is. It's the algorithm that sucks imo. If there's anything we can do to help - aside from the obvious - let us know!

Exactly the same here, but I think (one of) the problems is that we are the 3% John is talking about in the video. There are just not enough of us.

I'm here and I watch everything as soon as it comes out. I will support John in whatever endeavor he tries. I've noticed that a lot of the creators who went full time are running into this same problem. CZcams is screwing people up once again trying to TELL us what we want to watch

I am new to woodworking/building stuff, and I've looked at a lot of videos to get help and learn. You are one of maybe 3 or 4 channels I keep coming back to because of the usefulness of your content, your no BS/no hype approach, and what I perceive to be a high degree of integrity in both your woodworking and your approach to your videos. Whatever you decide about the future of your YT relationship, thank you for all of the great information.

I feel like every CZcams channel has a shelf life, no different than a tv show. People lose interest and move onto the next new thing/channel. I've even noticed people like Casey neistat are down on views, probably because his followers have lost interest and now watching something else. And like your saying, sub viewership goes down and CZcams stops promoting. It's a tough game to play long term.

    • @georgewebster6090

That said, I thought your home build channel represented your best and most interesting work. A couple of years ago there were many episodes, but then there have only been a few since. I totally think your new idea of focusing on home rehab is a winner. Getting into the details of solving rehab problems will be of great interest. Hi John, I can't get my head around why your viewer numbers are so low. I clicked the bell icon on all your channels and watch every one that I am notified about, and I agree with you that your newer videos are of a better standard now, although they have always been good. I cannot understand why so many would subscribe and then not bother watching the videos, if I was dissatisfied with the content I would unsubscribe to the channel (not that I intend to do that) but I still enjoy your videos even when you have a go at some of your viewers. As I said the % of subscribers that watch you videos should be in the high 90's. I think You Tube are missing the point and your videos should be at the top of the tree with Mathias and the rest of the really good makers .

Hi John... proud to be part of your small but dedicated subscriber count that checks their subs list more than the CZcams home page. I think you have considered this very well, and agree the home Reno channel is your best key to success... people think real estate is the way to go, and if you can tap into that, even for a couple of years, you will make a decent profit. I won't ever unsub from any of your channels, will watch when anything turns up, and appreciate all that you have done for the "community" including answering a couple of inane questions from me over the years. Your resilience shines through your videos, with a healthy dose of "f**k the man AND the trolls" which I can relate to. Onwards and upwards sir. I've learned heaps from you and other youtube woodworkers / makers / label of choice. Currently working on furniture for the radio station I manage here in NZ. All because of this wonderful group of individuals that share their knowledge. Ach, more sentiment than I can express here in a comment.. Much love from a grumpy ex-pat scot in New Zealand.

No matter how long or short the videos are, how polished they are, I even really started making short videos 1-3 minutes thinking maybe audience retention rate was the problem, and my audience retention on all of my recent videos is 70% range, and nothing I do will get those videos to be come recommended. John: I really enjoy your videos. I have not figured out which channel to watch to see what- but I see three main genres; Your philosophical (this one- ,au this is the ranting channel:) ), woodworking (machines, cabinets etc ala Mathias Wandel)) and last is home renovation projects. Just watched all the shower videos- I am considering doing those myself. Not sure how to make your numbers go up, but I think maybe you need to make the distinction between channels better and stay focused with those different channel themes. Some times it takes a lot to follow the dialog on your rants. I love your woodwork projects and your home remodel projects- mainly because you are real. You make mistakes and you have to do rework. That is how most of us do projects. Do not lose faith. If you have to-focus on the home projects and second the woodworking projects. But pick your favorites and prioritize them against the rest. I for one devour them all.

Feel your pain man - seeing exactly the same issues here in the UK and my channel is a fraction of the size of yours. Sadly due to CZcams's new algorithm the platform is slowly going down the pan. As you say they reward viral content which, in the most part, is awful. We'll be left with nothing but Fortnite videos and cats with cucumbers. I'm seeing more and more channels who produce GOOD content pulling the plug on the whole thing as it's just no longer sustainable. For anyone wanting to help, options are limited but you can try tweeting @YTCreators and / or @TeamCZcams to voice your concerns. Best of luck dude - Andy Mac across the pond. 👍🤘

John, what is it that you find personally most rewarding on CZcams? Rewarding emotionally as sheer pleasure, or in financial terms? When you do something that you enjoy, it shows to the viewer. I have liked your personal style, and you have inspired me to experiment, even copy aspects of your projects and methods. Even failures have good lessons to learn from, and I appreciate showing them. In reply to your pondering about your future on CZcams, I suggest you make the optimal choice balancing the reward wherever it comes from in the current CZcams ecosystem. John, your channels are one of the few that I have not lost interest in over the years. I love what you do, even your rambling on and venting (I love those). I recently reduced my subs because I simply did not watch them anymore (from either not needing what they offer anymore to just not liking what they have become). You offer everything from knowledge to entertainment and your personality translates extremely well (to me anyways). I will sub and watch you until the day you stop doing it. Love ya brother!

That grilled cheese sandwich looked amazing. I watched the whole video and then was like... Man I really want a grilled cheese.
Keep up the good work and good luck in whatever ultimately works out. Thanks for what you do.

John, sucks what CZcams is doing - they're killing great creators. I'm glad you're not going down the shill video route, it ruins someone's credibility in my opinion. I'm sure I speak for a lot of us when I say you have the support of the masses in whatever you decide to do.

Hi John, I thought I would give you my input regarding how I use the CZcams subscription feature. When I first started subscribing to CZcams channels, I only had a handful - and it was easy to just check on my favourite ones for new content when I felt the urge. However, I tend to use the subscription feature more as a set of CZcams bookmarks and over time the number of subscriptions I have has grown to over 400+ and I simply do not have anywhere near the time required to check on them all - so I end up relying on the CZcams algorithms to recommend me the new content from these subscriptions. This is FAR from perfect, but is probably the best way for me to see new content, as it is released. I'm willing to bet that a lot of people use CZcams subscriptions in a similar way. Cheers mate, I really enjoy and appreciate all of your videos.

John, I love your content. Having a sponsor is no different then what you piers are doing. You have to get paid. there is no shame in that. Worry about you and you alone. The trick is to make it seem like it's not a sponsored video. As long as you remain in control you will be golden!!!

John, I think the problem is that maker channels are not favored because sensational channels and corporate channels are given preference.

I admit I don't watch every video you publish on CZcams, I do watch many of them, and I always give a thumbs up. I'm a weekend woodworker that I began about 2 years ago, so I watch content that is something that I may want to do or am currently doing. Make a grandfather clock video and I'll watch the hell out of it lol. I watch your tips .

I love the home renovation videos. A house flipping series would be awesome. I am just happy to watch your videos so if you have paid endorsements it would not bother me at all.

I'm subbed to all your channels.
I went back and had a look at your blue channel and how many videos I've viewed recently.
I've not viewed a lot of them because your video title and the thumb nail are telling me all I need to know without having to actually view the video.
Where as for an example and probably surprising to you, the views you got on your cheese sandwich video.
The title versus the thumb nail was intriguing. It made me think....how is a cheese sandwich related to a cheese cutter and it was this that made me click on the video. I clicked because I thought I was going to learn something new.
When I clicked on the video, I found that the main subject of the video was not the making of a grilled cheese sandwich but your unique way of slicing the cheese. It was this that made the video interesting, even though we've seen you make the cheese slicer build previously.
Another video thumb nail versus video title that grabbed my attention was the recent one for the channel, Pure living for life and their video titled, "Not a job for scardey* cats (SIP wall plumbing)" (I apologise on their behalf for the *typical semi literate US poor spelling) with the thumbnail of a person on a lift at a very high part of their home.
This made me want to see actually how high this person was off the ground and my applied curiosity to see if the lift was moving around in the wind. I was attracted despite knowing of their openly stated and obvious grab for views with click bait video titles.
They have a video where they too have noticed a drop off in views and because they wanted to, "rescue", their income stream they applied the tactic of using click bait thumbnails and titles with a tongue in cheek attitude.
Another click bait video title/thumbnail that Pure living for life posted was "Don't let this be the next CZcams forklift fail video" or something similar. It was too overt a click bait title for me to click as it made me think of all the other click bait videos I'd watched and was either very disappointed at what I watched or angry that I was lied to about what was in the video.
I haven't presented very developed ideas as to what is going on in your viewers minds but what I've shared is better than the usual silence of viewers disappearing, never to be heard from again. Kind of similar to what happens with once popular restaurants and the customers stop coming and the restaurant owners don't know why because their customers never tell them. They just stop coming and they, the restaurant owners are left in a vacuum to try and figure out what went wrong and they usually figure out wrongly. I'm sure you have been a fan of a restaurant and then something went wrong one night and you never went back and the restaurant owners are never informed of your decision and they will never know because you have no investment in their business, much like your viewers. We have no investment in what you do.
For my part, my investment in your channels is to learn new stuff. Not to hear you whinge about how CZcams is screwing you over and you've done that previously on a video titled, Unsub from this channel" and I've heard you whinge in other videos too....that's not what your channel is about. It should only be about wood working and you're losing that focus.
My 5cents worth. Have a good day.

I make videos like this to let the viewers know what's going on - the ones that are actually interested, that is. I completely lost respect for your comment when you used the word "whinge".
Since you are so perceptive and can judge a video by its title and thumbnail, why did you bother watching this one if you knew it was going to be "whinging"? Was it to lecture me on how to click bait, because I already know about all of that. I mean, I have been doing this for a living for 5+ years.
