"We need more Dollar Generals." - A comment that has never been uttered in the midwest. They mysteriously breed like gremlins around here. 🤣
Same in the South as well.
They make me nostalgic for Family Dollar.
And that's ridiculous, since I witnessed a fight and was threatened with a knife in a FD. Still superior to DG. 😂
Damn don't spill any water on them 🤣
My dad has been contracted to do the dirt work for them a couple times and he said that he was told they planned on one every 10 miles across the country
Dollar general stores are like locust
As a person who lives in the south. Take one of the 7 dollar generals I see in my 13 minute drive to work and just move it to LA so the mythical crew can experience them always being out of stuff
And dirty and understaffed. DG is awful and scamming the American people.
And waiting 10 minutes for an employee to come to the register.
Out of the stuff people actually want to buy yet boxes of stuff not wanted
I thought this exact same thing when he said LA didn't have many dollar generals! I live in a city with a population of around 24,000 and I know of 4 dollar generals in town, but I feel like there's more I don't know about.
Same here in small town iowa. One town of a couple hundred people can have 1-3 dgs. Some of the mid size ones have up to 5, and the large ones....😂😂😂😂
My immediate thought for the cigarette taste was "yup, cooked Funyuns."
I'm surprised this didn't come up, because this is absolutely what I thought as well. That's definitely the difference. All the air in the Funyun absorbed the burnt onion taste
I was certain Josh was going to be so excited to explain that it was made with Funyuns instead of French Fried Onions
Recommending smoking funyons for my friends trying to quit cigs 😂
As someone who works in the cheese industry, I can tell you the reason the parm is brown. Cheap parm producers heat the hell out of the curds to expel more moisture and make a hard cheese quicker. They also probably age it at a higher temperature.
as someone in the cheese slinging business you don't know what you are talking about so stfu and don't pretend you do
I think the rind thing is also what they do like Josh said, usually cheaper products use a lot of the by products (like the strange but still crab meat that is just like the parts from the connectors of the crabs that they sell in cans, it's like water fibers of meat). I've never heard of anyone making cheap parm ONLY for the grated cheese so even so it's likely the rinds and leftover bits, and alot of the other grated cheeses also include cellulose which makes it a bit lighter.
@@tinntinnampGiven how awesome parm-reg rind is in sauce and soup, you'd think someone would make a premium brand.
@@tinntinnamp cheap parm doesn't have a rind! It's aged in plastic so a rind never develops. You are only going to find a rind on much more expensive products as natural aging is much more expensive.
who are they? name them.
the "step 1 bread crumb topping and step 2 tuna noodle casserole" really feels like "draw a circle, draw the rest of the owl"
Lol my thoughts exactly. Its exactly that.
It makes sense that Dollar General is a rare sight in LA, they seem to be everywhere in rural areas. I live in rural PA and you can't throw a rock without it bouncing off one Dollar General and then hitting another.
We call it the DG for short
In my area we call it the dollar store. We make no distinction.
Yeah they love to put them in small towns. There is one just a county over from me in a town of only about 500 people. And yes we also just call it The Dollar Store or even just 'dee-gee'.
Almost like it was socially engineered that way....Well, off to build more liquor and gun stores, and poisonous fast food chains in strategically placed neighborhoods, by coincidence, of course. Ain't life just full of cowinky-dinks like that? Funny. Haha.
They're in inner cities too but not as many as Dollar Tree or Family Dollar.
Please do more of these in this economy its both uplifting and helpful.
Not for nothing but, this doesn't seem economical at all? $8 for a dish, that's not cheap whatsoever. You can buy a huge sack of rice/potatoes, broccoli and some chicken, and get down to $1.50 for a dish
@@ChristianNorge This series isn't entirely about being economical, it's seeing what the stores offer can make. One of the previous videos featured Whole Foods, for goodness' sake. Like sure, you can live off of unseasoned beans and rice if you have to for a few dollars a week.
@@ChristianNorge Just an FYI, the $8 is for that whole casserole dish, not a serving of it. I think the recommended serving size for that type of casserole is 6-8, but if you watch other Mythical content like GMM you know that the serving size recommendations can be very off what a person would actually eat.
@@ChristianNorge $8 for the Casserole 6-8 servings, or less than $1.50 per portion
Yeah you're spot on. There's a million cooking channels where the sponsored host is using 30 dollar steaks and artisan bread from the local fresh market and it's just so out of touch with what I and everyone I've ever met in my miserable life have to make due with. Then when there there is a budget cooking thing, it's some flyover farm mom making a month's worth of macaroni and cheese for her family of seven, or it's recorded poorly on a phone in a dirty kitchen with poor instructions.
A clean, well produced stand and stir like this that looks good but uses the peasant's groceries to mealcraft would be the spot.
My grandma used to make a simple tuna noodle casserole. She didnt always put peas in it but when she did, what a treat. We loved it! So cheap, so simple. Looking back, it's clearly a struggle meal, but its a comforting one.
This just reminded me that The Horne Section has a really great song about peas.
My wife's comfort food is her version of tuna "casserole" too. She literally just boils pasta, drains it, then in the same pot adds mayo or miracle whip, and a can of tuna. That's it. But she loves it because that's what she grew up with. Talk about a struggle meal.
TUNA?? Noodles??? Casserole??!! Diabolical
American cheese slices. No breadcrumbs. That’s what I remember.
My Mom's family has a great tuna noodle crispy recipe, but we never used peas growing up. We tried it semi-recently, but without looking up how much to add, we put in probably 2 or 3 times as many peas as we should have!😂
We still ate it, but the pea flavor was overwhelming...
We always make it with some nicely toasted, buttery bits o' bread, and it really adds a lot to the dish.
I love how Nicole is like Josh's Stevie lol. Her laughter in the background always makes me smile
You don't understand though, once one Dollar General springs up somewhere soon there will be 3 more. You'll blink and another just builds itself nearby.
We have 2 in my town of 15,000 people. Almost literally on the 1 main road that goes through the town.
Edit: I forgot about the one in the middle so 3. Literally north side, center and Southside lmao
@@Haroldm814 We have 3 and only about a 1000 more people, lol
@justjones4148 lmao it's crazy. They spread like wildfire. Where you from? I'm in CT.
Edit: I lied. I forgot about the 1 in the middle of town. So we have 3 too!
The herpes of dollar stores
I was about to say, be careful wishing for dollar generals lol
I spend the majority of my time as a passenger in a long haul semi. No joke, we can be in the literal middle of nowhere with NOTHING for miles and we'll round a corner and there's a Dollar General with cars parked at it. Or. Going thru a town with 90% of it's main street boarded up, but there's a shiny new Dollar General.
20 years ago, same story, but Walmart...
And no matter how desolate the town is, or what time it is, there's ALWAYS cars in the parking lot!
me hearing "bring more dollar generals to California" is like hearing "yea bring in a whole load of crickets in and make them extra loud!"
In your future Dollar Tree videos, I would suggest opting for the smaller Parmesan cheese container. It’s actually Parmesan cheese, and most of us regular dollar tree shoppers go for it because the biggest parm is…sawdust-ish… Great video as always!!!! :)
Lies, my child demanded a bowl of cream of mushroom soup last thanksgiving and I let her eat it. Like followed me around the house with the can til I finally gave in. It’s one of her top favorite soups now.😂
She has good taste😂 I used to eat a bowl of cream of mushroom soup with crackers before preschool or kindergarten(I can’t remember which exactly lol) it’s still one of my faves at almost 19
@@corrinsheart when I was in third grade my art teacher told me that was one of her favorites! I used to do the same but I always forget to buy crackers nowadays to be able to do it 🤣
That was the only soup I would eat when I was sick growing up much to my mother's confusion lol
Saaaaaame it was one of my favorites when i was in elementary school in the 2000s 😅 as an adult ill make fresh from scratch mushroom soup now, we all gotta start somewhere lol
My step dad has cream of mushroom with grilled cheese sandwiches, has since I met him 20-ish years ago.
Dollar General has an interesting business strategy. They’re trying to be the old-timey “General Store” for small towns, bringing a decent variety of products but remaining small and easily accessible to the smaller towns with no huge corporate stores like Walmart or even Albertsons/Safeway. So, you’re more likely to find them around LA rather than in LA.
went in there didnt like the prices of most stuff was too much!
@@christianhansen3292 That usually happens with these small town stores even if they have a big corporation backing them up. Just a step above a fancy convenience store, they can charge more because they don’t have the big city competition. Still, their prices are better than most. Safeway keeps having mergers with European grocery store chains and their stuff and gets fancier and prices go up.
FYI, as a former employee of dollar tree… you can find fried onions at Dollar tree. It usually just released during the end of year holidays.
The dollar tree closest to me has had dried fried onions for a few years now. It’s not the French’s brand but they taste the same
Mine has them year round AND we have a better parm option too
Dollar Trees work off of extra stock, at least the two near me. Ya'll are gonna have way different stock from any others. Even the two in the same town, one you go for snacks and food options, another you go for the books and cups and a few other things that are definitely overstock from somewhere else. (Deadpool mug, glass coke cups. Definitely not DT things, but still there for a dollar.)
Yes, that is true.. dollar trees do work off from overstock for the most part. Though the store GM has the power to order certain items directly.
"We need more Dollar Generals"
I'm guessing California doesn't have any more open fields.
We used to make nachos from the Dollar Tree in college. One day, the labeling on the mexican blend cheese added the words "Now It Melts!"
😲😳 ... to their credit, it did finally melt so ... yay?
My mental health suffers everytime Josh leaves a tiny bit of food in the bowls, instead of putting it all in 🙃🤣
Don’t worry, that’s just him saving Trevor a snack
@@carol-annecollins 😂🤣
LOL! So it's not just me? I'm like, um there's still cheese in there. OMG you're not gonna scrape that bowl into the pan?? There's a blob of noodles in there by your hand! 😬
Love that Josh gave a shoutout to the GOAT Dawn Staley
Buttered popcorn is the only correct choice for best bean.
Josh. I think the two microphones put you in stereo sound...when I have my ear buds on it sounds like you are standing right behind.
If I put my speaker behind me, I get the same effect. 👍🏻
That's precisely how it works. It's why one technique used on overheads for drums is the same method to get a wide spectrum of sound.
With the 99¢ stores closing expect to see DG swoop in to take over.
I live in a small town in Indiana and there are 5 DGs within a 25 minute drive. And 2 FD/DT in the same radius.
Within an hour drive the DGs shoot up to like 20.
That's what I'm saying he's asking for more Dollar generals and I don't think he realizes what he's asking he's playing a dangerous game
I generally find dollar general more expensive than the grocery store on most staples. They are convenient though
This, this right here…. Top 3 favourite series, literally ever.
same
I’m sure dollar generals are coming to you. Here in Ohio empty fields in the middle of nowhere sprout dollar generals quicker than corn.
i genuinely love this series. i appreciate josh showing that you can make just as good, just as filling meals even if youre struggling. i definitely remember getting dollar general groceried as a kid and feeling shitty about it, this series is fixing that lil kid in me.
"Bring up more Dollar Generals"..... Oh no. The call has been put out there. They are already spreading.
Actually Dollar Tree and Dollar General have the same owner now and many stores are going to close in areas with multiple locations of each. It has been all over the news. I think in excess of 500 stores will close.
Honestly, this is my favorite mythical kitchen series, please make them more often. Josh running amuck in a kitchen while making recipes that I genuinely want to try is fantastic (I almost want to see another cast member do on, esp Nicole)
To be fair we don't have many Trader Joe's if any in the South and DG are staple stores here. There are a godsend for places that are rural for people not living close to any grocery stores and some even provide fresh produce now. I think this is my favorite series because there are a lot of people dealing with inflation and rising cost of food so if you can make a low cost healthy meal without breaking the bank you are helping families. Because a whole lot of people cannot afford places like Whole Foods aka whole paycheck. Thanks Josh and the Mythical Team.
I’m a toddler teacher, and hearing the measurement of a toddler handful made my day!
There are so many Dollar Generals here in PA, that my family has a running gag where we point them out. Whenever we drive past one, we say "Oh look, a Dollar General."
More judges needed!
Right?
Cream of Mushroom soup with a ton of saltines was a childhood staple for me. I still go back to the well occasionally when I need to eat away the sads.
best part of my day is eating breakfast and drinking my coffee while watching these fresh videos
I always called it 'tooner nooner cassie-roll' as a kid. Now I still do by habit. Can't remember the last time I've had it though
That's some good audio. I'm so glad they have two microphones.
Nah, too much, especially since Josh chomps open mouthed like a cow
@@208getalifeThank you! Josh’s mouth sounds almost made me cry.
I used to eat frozen peas as a snack. I can confirm that it doesn't correlate to the best outcomes later in life.
Maybe giving peas a chance was a mistake.
They make better vegan thickeners than individual snacks imo
Josh with the facts! Wish I got the basketball references, but I’m loving the battles here
Josh, you're so relatable honestly. I think our moms would've been "friends" and it would've ended like all of my mothers friendships - in a strange bout of violence and an awkward couple of weeks
I really love these store vs. Store comparisons. These are always great
I immediately went to DG and made a tuna noodle casserole at 8:30 a.m. because of you, Josh! And it was delicious. 😊
My mom never put cheese in her tuna noodle casserole, and it never had a frechs onion topper either. I enjoy her warm tuna mush ❤ this video makes me want to make it
These episodes are my all time favorite! The banter, mostly positive comments of less expensive food products (besides the cigarette taste), and the teaching people to cook, just perfect *chef’s kiss*
Honestly, entertainment value aside (and I do think this series is entertaining) this series is awesome because its helped me identify good products to get and from which store
Seriously that south carolina team was ridiculous. They had so much depth, chemistry, and talent that they could've sent two separate teams to the tournament with that roster. No one could figure out how to defend them with all their subbing and every lineup played well together. So good.
I would be curious about a target vs Walmart challenge
Once as a kid, I asked my dad if I could take a sip from his Coke can. He sad yes, forgetting that he'd been using it to catch his cigarette ash. 😭💀
Thanks for the Lady Gamecocks shout out!! ❤ They are phenomenal!!
Josh you’re extremely relatable to me and that’s one of the many reasons why I love you so much!! ❤
Love the sports commentary bro keep it up your a joy to watch man especially after a stressful day at work
One of my favorite things about these episodes is Nicole's laughter in the background!
Thank you for that noodle stirring sound. Reminded me of band camp. (my binging of MK continues! No sure how or why the breaks happen, but now I got tons to catch up on, on this rainy Saturday)
The basketball analogies absolutely work for me. Especially the 90s ones. Keep them coming!
I enjoy these vs episodes! Very calming for some reason and I dont know why 😂
oh boy battle of the cheap titans! this is epic!
Omg my fave childhood dish is Tuna noodle casserole! Best episode ever! ❤
As an Iowa girl and big Hawkeye fan, the women's basketball analogies were great! South Carolina was clearly the better team, but kudos to Caitlyn Clark for everything she did for the sport!
My introduction to Josh and mythical kitchen was 99c ramen done 3 ways during lockdown. More of those videos please!!
The ultimate battle of our time
Josh has really upped his fashion game recently. Looks great!
I really love that mythical is not pretentious about where food comes from or how people access it
I eat all of the cream-of soups as soup at least once a month. Chicken, mushroom, celery, broccoli... Sometimes, I even mix at least two of them...
Uuuugh so good. Tuna Noodle Casserole with a layer of Velveeta in the middle, and topped with crushed lays chips.
As a Brit I had no idea what he was making until it came to putting it in the oven dish. We'd call it a tuna pasta bake - "noodles" is generally only used to refer to the sort of thing you get in ramen and "casserole" is meat and veg in a (brown) gravy, similar to a stew.
I learn so much from Josh consistently on these shows 😂
Here in Texas there are Dollar Generals everywhere! We have Dollar Trees too. I like the candy Dollar Tree has during Christmas.
as someone who lives in iowa, that was still an amazing game to watch. good, clean, enthusiastic basketball. no trash talking on or off the field before or after the game. south carolina has an incredible coach. one with absolute class and love for her job and the sport. one that teaches her players to play to their best potential, but also to respect the sport and the teams they play.
I always say I am excited to get old because I already love soft foods like casseroles. lol. Josh, you may be interested in my husband's family's Great Depression dish, which is similar to tuna noodle casserole, but without the noodles (though you can serve it on/with noodles or rice if you wish): You heat tuna in a frying pan, add mushroom soup, canned peas, and crushed potato chips. It is cheap, it is amazing, and we cook it almost once a week, it is a family staple.
I would like to see an episode with Aldi being the cheap option
Where I am in the midwest, Aldi and DG are both more expensive than Walmart. Both used to be so much cheaper, it's crazy.
Watching this while getting ready for my shift at DG 😂😂😂
Not me fangirling over Caitlin Clark… Josh I love your basketball analogies please never stop
The basketball analogies most definitely work!
Was planning on making tuna casserole the weekend after this episode came out so I totally used the ideas for the crumb topping from this video. Only thing I do different is about double the amount of tuna :)
9:45 (forgets that it is no one EXCEPT of course for his bosses who Gut Checked every Campbell's soup as soup) 😅😂
I love the basketball analogies!
I love tuna noodle casserole, and I usually make it with Dollar General ingredients. It's soooooo good. ❤
My mom didn't use broccoli and swapped cheddar for swiss. Now i really want some.
The basketball analogies are working for me lol. I love Caitlin Clark, that girl is the truth!
The basketball analogies are working for me. Thanks Josh
The ring door bell comment made me laugh so much and made me think about so many things the film The Ring lol 😂😂😂😂
We love that there was no screaming in this episode. Thank you.
I mess with the basketball analogies. Keep doing them until we get you in the Celebrity Allstar Game
I've been sitting and waiting for Dollar General to be in one of these, I work for DG and I just wanted love lmao
As a big cooking and basketball fan, keep 'em coming Josh
Oh my god ive never gotten here this early in my life. This feels awesome
I eat A LOT of Dollar Tree items these days and now with the $5 items I get a box of 15 taquitos along with the $1.25 pouch of Velveeta to smear over them and a $1.25 Knors rice side (cheddar broccoli if available). $7.50 total cost and it'll get you 2 solid meals so $3.75 a serving, any leftover rice gets mixed into the dogs' dinner.
As a Finn I love that you namedropped my favourite artist "Tunnelnoodle" 😂
I propose a 'cheapskate but great taste' tournament. Take a recipe like the tuna casserole and get the ingredients from each of the 8 grocery chains . Run them by Sporked and you can share the cost of ingredients and price per serving
A gluten free video on these would be awesome! I love watching them but I can't make many of them cause I'm celiac.
Michigan here! We have lots of dollar generals 😂 we have regular ones that haven't been updated in years, ones that have been made over and now sell more cold stuff & produce. Then we have Dg Markets that even have fresh meats😁
Yea definitely relatable 💯
None of this is at all relevant to me since neither of these stores are in New Zealand, but I’m still here for every second
And it'd be a miracle if you could get any of these ingredients for the same cost hahahah Laughs in cost of living crisis
As someone who lives in a rural food desert section of the US's South (there's literally a cow pasture on my road), it's over processed garbage with elevated prices and smaller sizes designed to profit off the fixed budgets of America's lowest income individuals! Hooray! I also have to rely on a visit to a Dollar General at least once a week :(
@@imhungry2016 so very accurate! I wouldn’t be able to afford half of that
As an Aussie, same girl! 🤣 I’m so invested for no damn reason! I half sit here wondering if I can purchase any actual groceries from The Reject shop!
Also to Lindsey, sorry to hear about your struggles with viable food in your area. It’s super hard to get nutritious, affordable food these days. I hope something changes for you guys 🫶🏼
@@Kimbojangles at least you can occasionally get funyuns from IGA so that’s one possible ingredient of the many many ingredients in this dish, haven’t found them here yet! When I was in Oz I managed to get a few things from the reject shop but definitely nothing fresh or nutritious
Dg products are definitely different from over here in the Midwest. Amd we have a dg every 5 blocks or on the longer end every 5 miles
Hell yeah, finally somebody riding that Gamecock hype after the undefeated season!
Lovin the basketball analogies😅ive eaten a cigarettes.. well drank it, it was in my Mt. Dew
Nothing gets me fired up as much as Josh making some slop. More slop recipes please!
As the only person who cooks in their household, I really enjoy learning new methods and techniques from these videos. I really have learned lots from just watching Josh cook over the last few months.
My guess on the inconsistency of the cheese is that is specifically the product that didn't pass muster for use in the packages they sent to standard retailers.
Frozen golden sweet corn is a better snack in the summer!!😄
Happy birthday Josh!!
