    Trivium quickly rose to some fame with their earliest albums, but soon found that with fame comes the ugly side, too. Many fans just love to hate Trivium, and even though I've been very unkind to the past three albums, its because I genuinely feel the band can do better. But others have far more personal or silly reasons for despising Trivium. Lets examine 5 of them.

    What is this crap idea that sounding similar to another band is ripping them off. Everyone has influence they emulate, and there are only so many notes, cords, scales, and ways to arrange them. Furthermore; if a band is broken up, missing in action, or in the case of Metallica drastically changed there sound, I WANT another band to come along and fill that stylistic void.

    So... Do you like Trivium or not? It's hard to tell. I agree, everything after Shogun went a little downhill. But... In my opinion, In Waves was a very good album. In fact, I see a lot of Trivium fans on CZcams specifically, who believe In Waves to be their favorite, and their best album. I enjoy EVERY Trivium album. But... I believe after In Waves to be where they sort of lost themselves. I find some songs on their last 2 albums to be very enjoyable, but overall, they aren't the albums I listen to.

      I had the same sentiment. I still think there is too much David Draiman on VF for me to listen to it, but Silence is pretty good after a while now of listening to it. They described it as modern classic metal, which makes a lot of sense now that I know the album. Some songs are merely ok, while others are great. I think they or maybe their label wants them to write more radio type metal to bring in more $$.

    A pretty huge Trivium fan here but I have to say this:
    Every time they do interviews they're like: "Oh we're just a heavy metal band" "Our influences are Iron Maiden and Pantera and Megadeth" yet in every song when the clean chorus kicks in it becomes obvious that they're heavily influenced by 2000's nu metal/alt. rock movement (Slipknot, Deftones, Papa Roach etc.) that was almost universally hated by "true" metalheads. You're not "just a heavy metal band" bruh. I hate it how all these "metalcore" bands deny their obvious influences just because it's not cool to like nu metal.

    • @julianboyce3984
      @julianboyce3984 Před 8 lety

      It is inevitable to hear similarities in music of the similar genre. I have always loved Trivium and still do today, they are trail blazers and if they are influenced by those bands you mentioned, they're doing a way better job at producing good music than any of them.

    • @danteramiro8651
      @danteramiro8651 Před 8 lety +5

      Matt has said that In Flames is one of his favorites bands ever. You clearly haven't seen much of their interviews. Besides that, by saying "influences", they may be reffering to what bands inspired them to make music. I think they say they're just a heavy metal band because it is so much easier to say that than have to explain every single "genre" their music can be considered.

    I'm almost 40 and I like Trivium. I don't think that they reinvented metal or anything, but they're a decent band. Their studio albums sound fresh and tight. The Metallica homage doesn't bother me either. I was never a fan of growled or screamed vocals anyway. So if Matt Heafy sings in falsetto, I wouldn't care.

      I honestly think they peaked with Shogun, but Embers and Ascendancy came at a special time in my life when I was going to metal shows every weekend. When Roadrunner Records was doing the Road Rage tour in 2005, I went to several of those shows (which had two shitty bands and then 3 inches of blood and Trivium) and that was right when Ascendancy was big so I definitely have fond memories of hearing those Embers and Ascendancy songs often.

    I do agree with the top reason. I got into Trivium in 2013 when Vengeance Falls first came out, and I still love that album and play my busted case copy of it to this day, I was really disappointed when Silence in the Snow came out last year. This caused me to explore more of their older stuff like Ascendency and the Crusade which I now find myself listening to quite often. While Vengeance Falls is still my favorite Trivium album, I think that if I had started with Ascendency, that would probably be it instead.

    You are spot on, I did enjoy In Waves, it had a bit of their heavier style, and a bit of their radio rock style. "Built to Fall" ruined them though, I feel like they strive to make every single song as radio playable as that. Their last 2 albums have been garbage all over the place, very boring riffs, some songs have potential to be awesome songs, but oh yeah "screams wont work for Trivum" anymore. On the Shogun DVD Matt said they pushed themselves to make their best work, they must have used 100% of their creatives juices on that album because nothing since has been anywhere near as impressive instrumentally.

    I will say that shogun was definitely their best album, silence is probably their second best. One major problem is that they keep firing and hiring people into the mix, and that can disrupt the flow of the overall band, and I mean, you can see how that happened with Megadeth, their best albums were during the 90s because they had a stable lineup. After that things got really haywire after firing nick menza and letting go of Marty Friedman, and then sifting through dozens of new players. Honestly, if trivium wants to be truly great, they got to find a good and stable lineup, and find a consistent sound. Shogun and Silence are both good in their own right because both have really good content, but sound completely different. Trivium is literally trying to sound like two different bands, and that in it of itself is enough to create a split in their fanbase between the hardcore complex songs of shogun or the melodic and mainstream sounding songs from silence in the snow

    having listened to trivium for some time and seeing them live once I will touch on two points you made about why people hate this band. First off the metallica sound. I don't think trivium sounds like a metallica clone however I can understand people saying this especially if one of the few songs they have heard from the band is "poison, the knife, or the noose." The first 90 seconds of this song sounds like it could of easily been lifted off an old school metallica album up until it gets to the chorus and that was exactly what it reminded me of the first time I heard it. It doesn't bother me though. With metal having been around for so long with so many spin offs and genres it's expected that at some point a band will put out music that sounds like someone else. And second, I will mention their live shows. I've only seen them live once and I thought they sounded pretty good. I would say my only knock on them live, which is something I experienced first hand as well as seeing numerous live videos, is that they are seriously lacking energy on stage. All they seem to do is stand there and just play. This is little to no effort to work the crowd or get them excited for what's coming next. The whole show is literally them just standing in one place playing while the crowd just stands there in one place listening. It's kind of boring honestly and a metal show should be anything but boring.

  • @jakobwachter5181
    @jakobwachter5181 Před 8 lety

    I personally think popular mainstream metal tries to sound way too "anthem"-y. It's an evolution of the early 2000's metal scene trying to make tracks that get into your head but aren't necessarily good. Unfortunately, instead of trying to carve their own stream, they just listlessly float along the great river. Why? Because its current flows faster.

    I'm a fan of Trivium and I always defend them but I agree on some points. When you put all the albums next to each other, yeah, the last two albums have sucked. On their own, they are alright, but in comparison to the rest they do fall short. I Waves was a good album and the last one that really got me excited. I still buy the albums but I don't listen to them as much. I don't know why they want to simplify the sound. That's what made them great. You can take the screaming away, fine, but at least get the guitars to sound like they used to.
