Their fanbase is one that doesn't just include metalheads, causing their concerts to still sell out. But Metallica has its fair share of people who dislike the band for various reasons. Some reasons are silly, while others have been established ideas for close to three decades. Last week we showed that people hate Megadeth for reasons other than the feud with Metallica, so now lets look at 5 reasons people hate METALLICA.

    Cutting hair off isn't a reason: Matt Tuck from Bullet for my Valentine, Vadim Pruzhanov from Dragonforce, Bruce Dickinson from Maiden, Kerry King from Slayer, Rob Caggiano from Anthrax and lots of other metal musicians had their hair cut off but their music is still brilliant: otherwise you wouldn't know about them.

    The selling out argument holds no value simply because the people who claim that they sold out often aren't even able to agree on when they sold out. Some say that they sold out with Death Magnetic because one of their advertising points was that they're coming back to their old sound, so they were obviously trying to appeal to the listeners. Others say that they sold out with St. Anger because they tried to adapt a bit of a nu metal sound that was popular at the time. Others say that they sold out with Load and Reload, because they cut their hair, changed their style and completely moved away from thrash. Others say that they sold out with The Black Album because it had a lot of commercial success. Others say that they sold out with ...And Justice For All because that album featured One- their first mainstream hit, their first music video and their first Grammy winner. Others say that they sold out with Master Of Puppets, because the record wasn't all thrash. And even though it's not a common opinion today, there were people back then who said that Metallica sold out with Ride The Lightning, because it featured their first ballad- Fade To Black. Apparently Kill Em All was the only album that they didn't sell out with. How about you people actually decide *when* they sold out and then we'll discuss if they did.

    • @MaggaraMarine
      @MaggaraMarine Před 8 lety +16

      Kill 'Em All has "Seek and Destroy" that has a catchy chorus and it has become one of their most popular songs. So technically they sold out on Kill 'Em All too. Oh, and they use clean guitar in the middle section of "Phantom Lord" and slowed down the tempo of "The Mechanix" that became "The Four Horsemen". Total sellouts. Everything is a sellout unless it's 100% thrash with no mainstream appeal. So no pussy ass clean guitars or slow tempos or catchy choruses.

In interview that they'd done earlier that day, they were talking about how it was their best and heaviest album ever. I cant remember being more disappointed by an album, BUT... it grew on me. Before it could, though, I had to figure out a way to pretend it wasn't a Metallica album and come at it with ZERO expectations. After Load,, though, I couldn't get into anything else they put out.

    1. The way they treated Jason Newsted including mixing AJFA so that his bass is basically inaudible.

    Here are my takes:
    5. I guess I'm different because my dad started playing Pantera's Strength Beyond Strength before anything from Metallica when I was around 10. I didn't mind, and my parents still don't mind now either. Even with Metallica, he'd play different albums (particulary Black Album, Master of Puppets, and AFJA).
    4. No, don't hate something because it's hip. Be honest.
    3. Weren't other bands and artists against Napster too?
    2. Actually, there are plenty of stuff I enjoyed after the Black Album.
    1. Ok, that's not a bad reason but I still don't get it.
    People also bring up the relationship with Jason Newsted back then, even as if it's still an issue in 2021. It's sad.

  • @debonaire_nerd
    @debonaire_nerd Před 8 lety +4

    I'd sum up people's dislike for Metallica with the following:
    *1:* The 1990s and Bob Rock - there are still fans whinging that there was a decade of thrash lost as a result of their creative experimentation. I personally loved it, and it's a shame that those fans were unable to see past the band's need to move forward because some of their best ideas are to be found on those records. And please, fans, you love The Black Album.
    *2:* Napster - this is an old one, and is very rarely discussed but it is still somewhat relevant given that the band have embraced digital distribution as part of their business model. Although people have moved on from Napster, I think people kind of look at Metallica as embracing digital distribution on their terms alone at the expense of fans. But, did anyone really think in the late 1990s that digital distribution would be so widespread that you could download the latest hit to your phone? Maybe, but as early as 2008? Probably not.
    *3:* The gap between albums - this is a mixed one because ever since the mid-to-late 1990s, masses of fans have always taken time to rag on the latest release by the band in as much as they demand news on a forthcoming release. It's an endless cycle of irony. But given that their last record, 2008's Death Magnetic, was only intermittently interrupted with an ill-received collaboration album, a decent EP, and a forgettable concept film, the fans cannot help it feel like they are being hung out to dry. They need new material to hate.
    *4:* They're overrated - this is probably the most common criticism which kind of ties in with reasons #1 and #3 in that outside of the 1980s, it is unclear to many why this band are so lauded. The moment they stopped being the pioneers of thrash, people began to question. Again, I don't agree with this logic but this would be a reason why some would deem Metallica "overrated".
    *5:* Their taste in music - this is the biggest tragedy because one thing that has always bothered me about the rebellious, aggressive genre of Metal is that it is unabashedly conservative. Again, revisit #1. But it doesn't end there because even if the band discuss music they cannot help attract vitriol whether it be Lars announcing that, at least at the time, The Arctic Monkeys and Oasis were his favourite bands, or James' love of Elton John, or the band declaring their love of Lou Reed (see album and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Performance). This is why I can't be a metal fan in full because it's surprisingly proven that "if it ain't heavy, it's not relevant to us" when really the opposite is true. Metal was built on blues melody with certain pop sensibilities. If not for those influences, the genre never would have expanded to the heights of today. To me, disc 1 of Garage Inc. is essential to Metallica's legacy whether it be the thrashier covers or the outright country ballad, Tuesday's Gone.

    Let's not forget, the real sell outs here are the elitist crybabies who comment "Sell Outs" on almost every Metallica post you see on Facebook. Metallica didn't sell out, they changed. The black album was a change, but doesn't mean it was bad. Yes Enter Sandman is overplayed like crazy, but doesn't mean the album as a whole is bad. Holier Than Thou, The Unforgiven, My Friend of Misery, The Struggle Within, are some pretty good songs. Load may have not been Thrash, but it was still pretty good. The Outlaw Torn is a masterpiece Imo. If it's popular, or not thrash, the elitists who are yet to leave their moms basements label them "sell outs". It's pretty pathetic. Y'all spend more time hating on a band, rather than just enjoying the bands you listen to. Metal community in a nut shell.

So I got to judge those albums on face value and didn't compare them to their previous work and just enjoyed them as they were which I think is the problem. They set such high standards that everything thats not Ride the lightning or Master of Puppets is a failure and sucks, which is unfair. People need to realise it's like catching lightning in a bottle and will never be replicated so should stop expecting it. These guys are in their 50s now man just let them do whatever type of music they want to do. They're still great musicians so it'll still sound awesome

      While I agree Lars' drumming has gone seriously downhill, the "doesn't practice" quote is taken out of context. He was saying he doesn't sit down to practice a certain beat at a certain tempo or anything (he needs to though), because he doesn't practice like a beginner would practice. Instead he plays along with songs, his own or others. This would be practice if he applied himself but really the issue is he is too lazy to work up the endurance.

    Metallica just sort of lost their edge. When I listen to the newer Metallica albums, or watch recordings of their live performances from the last several years, I just don't feel it anymore. They don't sound vicious anymore. I can't feel the fury. Death Magnetic was a better direction from load, reload, and st. anger, but still it just didn't have that feeling in it. In their shows they almost seem like too much of pro live performers, they command the venue in a way that feels a bit offputting - closer to a WWE show than an older Metallica concert. They got old, they got nice luxurious lives, they just aren't the same people as they were in the 80s and early 90s. I think they should end Metallica and start new projects. While maybe the people who they are now aren't right for what Metallica should be, but they are all still incredible and talented artists and I'd be curious to see what other kinds of directions they might go in, just not while they still try to be the Metallica we all loved.
