    Postcolonial Space: Dr. Masood Raja
Since I claim to be a postcolonialism scholar, I think it is apt to include a brief description of my field of study. In my view, Postcolonialism ( also written as Post Colonialism or Post-Colonialism) is a dynamic field of literary study that focuses on the history of colonialism and native responses to the colonial policies and life after colonialism formally ends. The field of postcolonialism also offers insights into the literature and culture of the the former European colonies and their struggles after the end of colonialism.

Sincere appreciation for this. As a lifelong scholar of this history I am saving this lecture and purchasing the book to read to my granddaughter whose great-grandmother’s Sephardi family shares this narrative……..born in Alexandria. May I add that scholarship of Professor Avi Shlaim has also elightened my understanding of the jews who found haven in the Ottoman Empire.

I so appreciate Dr. Raja’s lecture- not only the content, namely how the ruler of the Muslim Ottoman Empire saved the Jews of Spain after 1492’s expulsion by Queen Isabella and King Ferdinand, and how the Jews of Spain, the Sephardim, thrived for centuries in the Ottoman Empire- but Dr. Raja’s gentle persuasive (not didactic, professorial) down to earth way of instructing us and correcting misunderstandings of our shared Jewish-Muslim-Arab history.

In Portugal, around the same time, the Jews were also expelled. Many went to Holland where they settled and made good profit from the spices brought from India by the portuguese. Profit that could have stayed in portugal if they had not been expelled. In Amsterdam there is a neighbourhood where they lived and where the streets now have portuguese names. The Jews also fled to Marroco where to this day they live in peace with Muslims.

In my high school history class (and in many schools in the US it is taught) and my sons learned it when taking history classes in 2010. The Sultan sent 8 ships to Spain to get the Jews from Spain in 1492. The Sultan also knew that the Ottoman Empire needed business, finance, and trade to function as an empire since many Moslems were not in these professions except in the military as warriors. It was advantageous to both parties, especially since the Empire needed a strong economic base. After the expulsion, Spain's economy decreased. Also, Columbus came to the Sultan of the Ottoman Empire to finance his travel west in the Atlantic Ocean to reach India to open a new trade route flanking the Silk Route believing that the Earth is spherical, not flat but the Sultan rejected it however, Spanish Queen Isabella did not. This decision changed the world history. Furthermore, Jews and non-Christians in the Empire were taxed heavily since they were not Moslems and it was protection (protected by the military of the Empire) and wealth taxation. Recent wealth taxation was placed after the creation of the Republic of Turkiye in the late 1930s but mainly after WWII to spread the wealth of non-Moslems to the Muslim population. So, everything was not that cozy.

At the beginning all the peoples were black they became lighter skin when they mixed with the Europeans (whos origin was also black) those in the area of Spain were more n turkey etc are the result of that mixture... If we don't go all the way back to when the issue of "RELIGION" started we will never get to the root of the problem which in most part is RELIGION DOMINANCE.

In the case of Spain and although it is explainable, after the 900 "reconquista" there was the idea to have catholicism installed as the only religion in Spain to strengthen unity. After a certain time the said impoverishment became more and more evident, Spain falling back in the following centuaries on nealy all cultural fields, most of all in science. The high ranking Khazarian Turks adopted the Jewish religion in 700Ads and welcomed many Jewish people into their state which extended from the west of Caspian Sea to the Crimea peninsula. Some of those Turkic people travelled down to Turkey after the Turks invaded Anatolian peninsula. So the Turks were already accustomed to the Jewish culture during the Ottoman times. In fact, one of the Turkish small states in Anatolia had David's star in their state flag in 1200ADs.

Three interesting facts about the inquisition. 1. I believe the Jews lended money to the Spanish crown to sponsor the building and provisioning of the discovery ships in the hope of receiving part of the profits from the discoveries, gold, spice, slaves. When it was clear that the profits would be huge, probably bigger than any other in history, with the exploration of north and south America, large parts of Africa and trade with Asia, the kings decided to exclude the jews. This is my view 2. In portugal today in jewish museums there are 500 year old house keys. When the jews left, they closed their houses and took the keys with them in the hope of coming back one day. They never came back but passed the keys to the next generation until today and recently families donated the keys to the museums. 3. There are still jews today in portugal that never left and hid their religion for centuries. Today there are synagogues and mosques in portugal, a religious tolerant country.

@@masoodraja Hi.... In that aspect one can also look at Convivencia (the golden age of Andalucía) when the Muslims, Jews, Pagans and Christians lived in relative peace - period 1050-1250 AD. The foundation of Sevilla by the Muslim rulers speaks of that era of peace and tolerance.

Jews lived their golden age among Muslims. Their best Rubeanic scholars lived in islamic lands. The catholics did not differentiate between muslims and jews. They persecuted them and considered them ennemies. Jews went with muslims to teh Ottoman empire and North Africa.

The Magnificent Centuries referred to Bayezid II and Suleiman the Magnificent too provided the jews with a safe haven .... Hence my failure to understand the Israelis'hatred towards muslims. Also I am perplexed by an important factor which seems to escape both muslims & jews, namely, that they have a common patriarch, i.e, Abraham !

Well those are babylonian origin jews, but the ashkenazic come from scythians and worked together during the bce days at the fall of nineveh and jerusalem. 2 distinct groups. None of them are the real deal. But ofc the sephardic and rahdanite sides participated in merchant routes land and sea. Israelite Brotherhood has the info on that channel. Im commenting since you asked :), cheers. Tldr those are amorites anyways. The fact that its ignored is part of the problem. 2 groups and a stolen heritage.

To be fair, the Ottoman Muslims were at war with The Roman Empire, and had just captured Constantinople. This is like Muslims losing Mecca today. During the Muslim 8 centuries of occupation in Spain, the Jewish people acted as the middle men between the Christian elite and the Muslim elite and they became very wealthy. The Christians were treated like lesser beings by Muslims. Many Muslims would either refuse to trade with Christians or apply a tax for the privilege (Jizya). The Jews would represent Christians in all affairs with Muslims. The loss of Constantinople was the nail in the coffin for Christian, Muslim and Jewish peaceful cohabitation. The Christians saw the Jews as conspirators. If we examine the history of the Jews, you will notice that they have always been in lead roles, advisors, administrators or religious figure head (Rome), of all the great Empires; Babylonian, Egyptian, Roman, Ottoman, British, and even America today (look at the top positions in Biden's administration, hence their support of Israel in Gaza). The endless greed of mankind to want to take over the world, be it physically, mentally, spiritually, or economically, has a price!

Is the term " Muslims" synonymous with a nation or a country? I don't support any classification of people according to the prevalent religion of the citizens. Religion is a private and personal affair not a state affair....my opinion. Religious belief being a subjective concept can be subject to human irrationality in interpretation and practice. ....and therefore dangerous for human common existence.

Massod bhai... I have a very bitter experience that changed my life for saying almost the exact words in class, during my master studies here in Germany. I did my bachelor studies in Istanbul, Turkey at one of the Gulen movement universities. Where I was taught about this case. When, I expressed this in class during the visit of a Jewish scholar, and a former student of the University, I was honored by the Jewish scholars, but the German protestants teacher, that organized the meeting found it an anti Christian move, and then started a campaign against me to label be an antisemite, or something else like a homophobe as according to them, this is a serious transgression between Jewish and Christian relationships by the dominated Muslim. I am sure you had similar experiences, but I was seriously bullied by judeochristian liars at my university, who are actually nitzchean Nazis..
