I do love Rob, don't get me wrong, but being the age that I am, when I think of Metallica, Jason is always there, even though I was only 8 when he left, and I had only just started being properly interested in music...

Yep. Noticed that, too.
Not so sure it's that. Lars has allways had a lot more of James guitar in his monitoring than Kirks - so for him that might not have been so noteable in the heat of the moment. More likely he is trying to communicate with his tech or someone at the monitor mixer.
you'd think he'd be used to that by now...
