Lars is just like Slash, a lot of people talk shit about their work, but no one looks more badass while playing their instruments than them, I personally love what they've done
+Josh Rose Man ... I love metallica, but Lars can't hold a tempo after 30 years of drums practise ...
+Nicolas Benvenuto Can you hold a tempo?
pingpongpung sure ... how can you play in group when you don't hold your tempo ... He speed up his tempo on for whpm the bell tolls ... man this is the easiest music of metallica .. this is not arppegios from hell of yngwie malsteem .. I love lars but is not a good drummer
no one looks more badass? lol.
Ernst Traag so does Lars
The double bass made it awesome.
jaden laughing yes he did
It's on original album version too but not loud as on live version
everyone says Lars Ulrich is bad, but he really is badass for Metallica, he probably is the cause of a lot of drummers becoming drummers, so to anyone who's he's shit, he's still badass and inspirational.
TurkeyRaider Lars Ulrich is personally one of my favorite drummers. His drumming is simple but effective
As a drummer I have to say Lars is my hero and the one who push me to play drums!! All hail Lars!!
Marios Tom his drumming on hardwired is badass
Lamborghini Diablo SV #VANTASTIC I totally agree with you!!!
His drumming has no rythm and he is only able to play one beat, more or less
Whatever you think of Lars' technique, he's an absolute blast to watch. Drumming is physically demanding and a lot of guys are technically perfect, but they just sit there, stoney faced. Lars always looks like he is having FUN! The way he throws his body around way more than he needs to, and throws himself into the kick pedal so hard that he almost stands up is so punk rock. You can tell he's feeling the music. I'd take feeling and power over technique any day. Unfortunately, Lars was never going to retain that intensity as he got older, though I did see Metallica last year and the power of the whole thing blew me away, so he does have good days.
Have you ever seen mike portnoy? Phenomenal and fun to watch, but I do agree in the most part
technique is not music
You just called Metallica punk rock.....
metallica always played disco
Its cocaine
My favorite angle :) \m/ Lars, you legend. Fuck the haters.
Lars is badass!!
It doesn't matter if Lars plays easy stuff because it's super heavy and super solid!
if u really want to see talent search for danny walker drum cam. 1000x better
+Izak Ryssen hahaha.. go see portnoy, he can play better than anyone else, but yeah he can only play, not create like lars.. :P
You may talk crap about Lars - it is a free world. But surely you can post work of those you are promoting? Are they more popular? Or is it YOUR belief? And who cares really....it is not like Metallica would BE Metallica without Lars. GFY.
2:42 still one of my all time favourite fills
That fill is way too long, breaking the rythm.
+iMeMySelf hands down the most ridiculous comment I've ever heard
+iMeMySelf always finding a way for critices him
@imemyself I don't know why ppl like u criticise kirk and lars no matter what they do.
younghatter a cymbal choke in the middle of a roll like that? Badass. B-)
Ain't he amazing? Not only the drummer skill, his entire performance! Maybe without this guy I would never have taken a drum stick in my hands again
GerGerHaHa I agree 100%!
GerGerHaHa same man I've been listening to Metallica since I was a baby and Lars is one of the drummers that I look up to he's extremely underrated and unappreciated
My man!
used to be
Thank you for giving Lars some well deserved credit...his drumming is so catchy...very inspiring!!
the thing most non-musicians (or short sighted amateur musicians, if we're being honest) will never understand about a guy like lars ulrich is that while he may not be at the top of the heap, technically...he's tight with the band, powerful and puts out at 100% at all times...I ALWAYS defend Lars when some numbnuts who thinks that joey jordison is the pinnacle of drumming starts bashing him...lars might not be the best drummer on earth but he's the best drummer on earth for metallica and that's all that matters
+manifestgtr You're right, nothing else matters.
+La Patte D'or yeah man...never cared for what they say...
+manifestgtr You can NOT put 100% in and gradually get worse over time. He is lazy and doesn't even care enough to properly endorse his own products, such as snares, etc... He is an over paid musician and there are people who put in twice the amount of work and care into the percussion craft that will never pay a bill with it. Just because he is famous doesn't mean shit. If you saw a guy playing at this level in a bar band you wouldn't give a shit. IMO
+manifestgtr besides that, this performance ist pretty damn tight ;) even a good musician with a good ear can tell this. But to all concerns, Lars was pretty good back in those days and I mean he was very creative and changed fills here and there constantly. On this point we have to adress that he and james mostly are writing and aarrangeing all the metsong, Kirk making solos and maybe a riff or two but Lars is a good arranger as far as that is concerned. So this also has to be mentioned, because a lot of technical and talented drummers can only play what they get to play, but songwriting- and arrangeingskills are often near to fucking zero. Lars rulz!
First of all if you think there aren't other drummers who arrange and compose. Which Lars does not compose. Then you need to broaden your musical horizon. He had ideas..the band either agrees or disagree. Second the time and number of takes needed to make Lars sound good is unbelievable. I used to be a huge fan. I actually like the guys personality's just not Lars. Lars does not write songs. He has terrible time. Rushes every song. His licks suck. You can be a fan all you want. It will not change my opinion. And after all it's just my opinion, so don't get your panties in a wad.
I really like Lars.
ROOKTABULA well because he was a coked up asshole in the 90s
SAMEEEE
@gyroman567 stop saying whenever Lars played good he was on drugs you Lars haters are just jealous he is a really good drummer.
Same
Lars is not my favorite drummer in any way, but he’s definitely the only drummer who can keep me watching him drum a simple beat for 5 minutes
What a brilliant snare sound!!
+Lexavax But if he did keep it that way, we wouldn't have the funny Lars memes
He uses them heavy ass cymbal breaking sticks.
The tama bell brass in all its glory, this was filmed before his signature steel snare was released.
You should check St Anger for that
@@joshsherlock2372 Actually he had a signature bell brass snare as well.
In my opinion the beauty of rock or metal it's not in playing insane or impossible riffs/beats, is living the music that you play. And Lars here is really living it, you can see it,you can feel it. That's what's important for me in rock or metal.
I wish that double kick was in the original version.
Still don't see why people think Lars sucks. He might have fallen of the wheel at bit in the 2000's, but in the 80's and 90's he was one of the best drummers in the world.
multiestonian Decent, he was never one of the best
he has always been one of the best*
Emil Jensen that's perfectly accurate now
The most influential drummer ever. He made millions of people around the world over the decades grab sticks
Watch and learn people. He is one of the best drummer in the world for a reason. The energy he has and the feel he has for the music is unbeliveable.
lars is a good deummer i wouldmt say the nest but he is rythm he os just hetting older and doesnt practoce anymore but if he would he would rock hard!!
I love the sound of that white TAMA ... it's simply powerful
Legend
For all the people that hate Lars, Lars put out that ad in the newspaper looking for a band, Lars had a spot on a compilation album before even having a band, almost everything business wise for Metallica Lars is the man for, Lars is also responsible for arranging and writing every song in Metallica's discography, so before you hate Lars remember without Lars there's no Metallica and metal as we know it today may be very different
I love how Lars plays the drums while looking somewhere else with ease.
the coolest drummer ever
.
Haha you must not know many drummers then
GamerDares Wins You can say about him whatever you want. But let me tell you one thing. He was fucking awesome in this show. You can even hear the fucking double bass. Fuck the haters. Lars....GOD.
Menno Wielenga yeah this was 20 odd years ago when still passed as a "decent" drummer.
Now he's just a wanker.
Happens when you get old !! Drumming like he does is topsport. And he admitted it that he is lazy.
all Lars haters should really see this...It actually proves how good he is!!!
+Aaditya Pai was*
Adrian *is
He is still great
Never misses anything on that snare. People hate on him but you cannot deny that this was a flawless performance
This was damn good. Never forget people hate him because of the napster shite.
lars isn't a drum technician, but his style fits perfectly with metallica and thats all that really matters
I WANT THE LARS ULRICH OF THIS TIME BACK :( THE TIME HE LOVED AND ENJOYED PLAYING DOUBLE BASS ://
Could'nt care less wether you think Lars is a bad drummer...The fact is he's still part of the most succesfull metal band the world's ever seen!! So all of you critics...make it better, and I'll respect your opinion, and not a second before that! \m/
Sorry latch onto this some years later..............Your not wrong bro and yeah, have been better drummers around but he fits.......Im 49 years old now, got my first vinyl Ride the Lightening when i was 12........You cant beat it.......Slayer fans bang on this that and the next thing but Metallica just seamlessly made a cool sound.
Kirk's effects solo was epic in this one.
One word. PERFECT
why dose everybody hate lars just because he sued napster for giving free metallica songs out without his permission
i think "everybody" hates lars cuz of his drumming, have u seen him live NOW 2014 ? he just needs practise which i believe, he doesnt do much ... he needed, in my view, a drumming teacher or so
they hate him because they're gay
***** Ok you've watched your cartoons time to go to bed now ..Ahahahahahaha
no clue what you're talking about son.You speak nonsense...
Lara didn't sue just because they were giving it away for free. They were giving away songs for free that weren't officially released yet. It's like they were giving away song like lords of summer or vulturus for free.
And then someone has the guts to say that Lars is a bad drummer. Look at that...that's passion man that's drumming
Lars is the best drummer ever!
Definitely the best metal drummer.
I love those triple kicks he is doing instead of breaks!!
A challenge for any Lars-hater: please find me one mistake or messed up beat in this performance? Anyone?
You forgot this is For Whom The Bell Tolls. It's fucking easy.
*****
Fair enough. But watch the full concert. He plays brilliantly.
He's basically jamming here. Try to compare this performance with the original song, you'll notice a bunch of missing parts. He just replaced them with some very basic beats. Not saying that he's not good because he got a good control overall, perhaps just lazy.
VeryOKLising
Try playing a song for 15 years the same way over and over again. I personally think this version sounds better than the orginal.
Nakke144
Tons of people do it. A lot even more than 15 years. You're coming up with excuses.
i dont know he is best drummer or not but nobody looks great like him on drum
Neil Peart is the best. then Mike Portnoy but Lars is good
Veysel Tokel Neil Peart then Simon Phillips
Veysel Tokel tottaly rigth men
he looks like a goblin😩😩🙏👅🌋🌈💦💦💦
He's the only drummer who looks cool as fuck haha
2:30 that low Tom and snare sounded like a bomb goin off😍 awesome
"AbsoFuckinglutely!"-James Hetfeild 1998
1997*
1996*
Dread Further no this concert was indeed in 1997 before the release of reload
1997 and he sounds this good?
He sounded like did in 91 in some parts
Definitely more singing but he sounded good
Lars Ulrich is a good drummer
Paul Mace *was
Paul Mace he used to be a god but now...
Nahhhh
Paul Mace Yep
LoL Teletubbies If you’re a god, you’ll stay as a god.
Here's my take on the Lars haters. Your all just butthurt because he can't fly in the double pedals. WHO CARES! Metal isn't all about speed. Look at some of the fastest drummers today in black metal or whatever, take away their feet and they can't do much. Lars is the ultimate metal drummer because he can do double bass and he can groove and he can keep a beat! He adds flavor to the song instead of doing some stupid blast beat through the whole song.
Why on earth do you compare black-metal drummers to lars? A whole different genre. And he is very incapable to keep a beat, tempo just swings around. Just sayin'...
Ville Kurimo i rather hear the way he does it with his tempo and beat all over the place instead of the same repetitive thing everyone else does
I just wanna hear metallica play (: I didn't know everyone listened to music to get mad now. I thought you listen to music to enjoy it? lol people get so mad
He's a guy who can play the same rhythm guitar, the guitar and drums forming one, while others can not demonstrate the same to me ... he's better at it! ex: Dyers Eve; Through the never, one, ... and justice for all, and among others ...
.
Lars become one with the rythm and this is what's make's him one of the greatest drummer in metal history
Lars is rudimentary player but he's brilliantly entertaining. No drummer plays with this amount of energy at world class level.
***** Absolutely
+revivedfears Look up dave grohl in nirvana haha. Thats energy
Laurens Bruins Grohl is awesome but I still think Lars is more entertaining to watch, especially back in his prime. Dave is obviously the better drummer though.
revivedfears Grohl also is more energetic imo
Laurens Bruins Cool
Lars amazing skin hitter he puts in whats needed in a song . Keep it up lars ..
I really love that lick by James at 2:03 just sounds awesome
The best drummer of the fukin world
JamesLR In your dreams
Snikendeskjultgulrotnepe I wouldn't call mario the best. But mario is clearly better than lars
RickGrimes41 I doubt it. Lars is pretty good
cry haters jAJAJAJA
My favorite Disco band
being an drummer in an metal band is the hardest job on the planet
his druming in justice for all defined the modern metal drumming and his also a great composer along with james..without him metallica would never be that HUGE!
Me on my bed nodding my head jamming to this🤘🤘🤘🤘
2:44 that's heaven
This guy is such a pleasure to watch.
I dont like Lars as a person but Goddamn his drumming skills are legendary. Motherfucker is a Drum God! Respect forever man!
+Randy De jesus haha no ... Buddy rich is THE drum god :D
Nicolas Benvenuto But I would put Lars on my top 20’s
Such a simple song and yet so fun to watch Lars play it. Awesome. He really lays into the groove.
That was fucking EPIC
Power. soul, energy, swing, Lars has what a lot of drummers don't.
This is one of my favorite Metallica videos!
I was there... I can't believe it's been 18yrs already!!!!
\m/
Make that 25 years 🤘🤘🤘😣😣😣
i did not say that he does not play double bass anymore ... at this time he had the passion and the power to play double bass ..but now he is old ..but he still kicks ass for his age :)
Lars is kicking ass like in the late 80's in this show
Man, Lars used to have hair.
Thats not funny fact.
before it was cool
Jason's playing in the first 30 seconds is awesome, one of the best live intros I've heard
he looks so good in this
wow I love all his facial expressions
Such awsome drumer love these guys been listening to them since I was 11 and I'm 30 now
The fucking nipple ring lol
Lars is a legend
Lars is a God... no matter the time...past. present or future... implay drums thanks to him... what a drummer...
When Jason and Lars look each other at the end. Maaan. Goosebumps.
A energia que o Lars transmite é absurda!!! Metal na veia
このジェイソンの演奏はほんとうに素晴らしいと思う👍
This is bad ass drumming. Poor Lars haters...
I love this video...
None of them are the best at what they do but they have made the biggest impact on artists and music in the last 30 years
Lars fit right in he wrote the drum tracks and they fit
I love Lars as a person and drummer, stop hating guys! Metallica Rules!
Kari C i do agree with u
Totally agree with you!
One is one of the best drummers in the world, and the other is Lars.
I love Jason sm
Awesome and super precise drumming here. Lars is a truly versatile drummer with some real power and finesse.
3:36
2:44
0:33 so awesome when james and lars threw up their hands simultaneously to the crowd they're in harmony.
1:15 totally love how interactive james is with the band and crowd.
Now now children.. Cliff, Jason, and Rob are all very badass bassists.
looks like a movie
HE LEFTT THE FUCKINNGG BANDD!!!
He really looks so young... ah.. old times
the most technical lars of all time... amazing god.
That was 1986-1992
fucking 90s...
The drum sounds really good. The last 10 years the drum sound sucks so bad. The other good thing: He is playing very sobber and not hiting the whole drum set every 2 seconds.
He has been improving a bit, maybe because of Hardwired.
Because that guy toured and play the same shitlist.. so do kirk and the rest.
With exactly this I learned to play drums. Seriously. I had no drum kit, just this Cunning Stunts DVD from the supermarket. Selectable camera angles for some songs - what a feature! The future :) I drummed on my thighs over and over again, at some point I could do three things independently (hihat, snare, kick)
The first time I sat behind a drum set in school, I could drum. That was a good 15 years ago, I still like drumming passionately!
Thx and cheers
Haha lars is freakin rockin it there! I with james singing could be like it was in the 80s or even early 90s
Holy shit this is fucking amazing!
Lars kicks ass
This is it man! Looking at this explains alot! Lars got his own style and NOBODY got that.
That make's Lars my Favourite drummer!
Kirk looks so badass in the end
My fav drummer of all time . Maybe he is not the best but he is amazing with his performance
Flawless..!
+pesoff Actually it's not flawless, but you have to be a drummer to hear that.
Well, I can in fact play the drums, but I still wouldn't refer to myself as a "drummer". I'm self taught since I was a teenager, but can't really do any of that too advanced shit. But please do explain to me how it isn't flawless, I'm sure I can understand if we both try :)
+pesoff Yeah, I can see. I play around 7 years for now, but that's not the case.
Well, thing with his drumming here is the dynamics. For example 1:45 - yeah, he does the (uh, I don't know its' name in english, but I mean these two hits, one on snare, second on tom, and two or one hits on a bass drum), but dynamics are off. It's kinda sloppy. If you beat the tempo you can hear how he falls off.
Also when he plays the accents and goes with fast 6 hits on the bass drum, then snare and cymbal, the single hits are kinda missing, like one of his legs get sloppier. It's actually quite easy to hear on One (from Cunning Stunts), but here too.
Moreover, 3:59 - he misses one shot, it's barely hearable, but I noticed it.
So summing up I'm not saying his performance here is bad, because it's not, but not flawless :P
Hahahaha well, you explained very good and I accept your answer. I would even say I agree with you from that perspective, because Lars greatest talent (even tho he's actually a drummer) isn't actually drumming (haha) from my point of view :P I love the guy, don't get me wrong, I'm a huge fan. What I mean is that he's accomplished so much more than just being a drummer in a good (the best) band.
But anyhow, with your reasoning, can't you find flaws in basically ANY live performances then :P Must be hard to really nail something, like really without a single mistake... :P
@@drumbeard haha far away from flawless! It's Lars, we all know, just a show man ;-) greetings from a drummer
you know you are getting old when you have the cassette tape video of this concert like me =)
That must be the best ducking feeling ever, to have a crowd at their knees and being completely into the performance.
jason newsted is best bass player had metallica
Lars Imrich hit A LOT harder than he does now.
Shallex hahahah
ROOKTABULA hes older
He doesn't. There's always a sweet spot that gives you RIGHT attack and sustain, and Lars almost always found it perfectly I think. If you move your hand further and faster, it doesn't mean that you hit harder. And hitting hard is not good at all, cuz it doesn't give you good sound. It is right for guitar playing as well - if you hit strings hard, you get wrong intonation (Kirk as example, he hits strings harder than James and that's why he's an inferior rhythm player), but if you hit em soft, you won't sound metal, so there's a sweet spot as well.
Probably cause there getting old
@@stam1ska Yo are right but kirk does not string harder than James. James is known as the "Riff Master"
Simply. What a cool Band.
Glad to know them since 1988..
Thanks.
He played awesomely in that show! like a professional that know how to play the drums. Double bass we hear well and correct.
It´s the music he "produces". People who hate him could never play like him even they think they could. Music is about energy and feel. Tempo changes and all is part of his game. They are not "accidents" like haters think. Good drummer makes the band sound like it should. If you listen to John Bonham drum tracks, they are also full of small "mistakes" and uneven stuff and what have you. It´s not what counts when you want the music to please your brain. btw have you heard top bands covering metallica? it´s not the same and that is the magic.
No one can play like him because it would take less skill.
monokhem Yes It is numb nuts
the sound of that kit! why doesint he sound like this now?
Wasn't him.
There's even a myth that Lombardo recorded And justice because Lars was to shit
lam neth wouldn't be a myth if something of it was true.
GamerDares Wins
but its not...
zackattack94 like i said above.
Prove it...
+WastedFreakOut Because people know how to play drums properly now.
Kirk ends here with for me the best way yet! Awesome sustain en way!
This concert in Dallas has to be their 2nd best live filmed concert. Seattle being tops.
