'The word "gender" was a magic cloak' - How the NHS got away with puberty blockers | SpectatorTV

- How did the NHS allow gender ideology to take precedence over the care of vulnerable children? This week, the long-awaited Cass Review into the now-shuttered Tavistock Clinic was published. It found that the puberty blockers it prescribed to over a thousand children with gender dysmorphia was based on remarkably weak evidence.
James Heale, The Spectator's political correspondent, interviews the journalist Hannah Barnes, author of 'Time to Think'.

Politically motivated medical malpractice. There should be prosecutions.
Sadly we know that these doctors will not go away. They will move to start new NHS services under different names, or move to private clinics.
@@Subcomandante73How do "we know"? Complacency like this allows that to happen.
@@Subcomandante73 They already have!!! They did, they have been misrepresented for no endocrinologist is going to put their professional credibility and potentially their freedom on the line for what does not compute. The brain is plastic.
I'm sure most of them did. The "marketing and gaslighting by Mermaids, Stonewall and Pink News" captured the imagination of people who liked the warm fuzz of terms like "gender affirmation" and were manipulated by the concept, that was strongly pushed in the media that the only outcome to not allowing children to medically transition was a dead child.
Some did speak out. Google what happened to Michael J Bailey and Kathleen Stock. They lost careers and much more for speaking up. It's not surprising that others chose not to say anything.
@@elizabethrobertson1159 this has been going on for 10yrs now, how long ago did Kathleen Stock "speak out"?

This interview made me really sad. These children were being abused by Tavistock in order to promote an ideology; disconnected from evidence, research, standard medical practice, and treating them holistically. And any dissent was silenced by clinic management.

I’m amazed that Endocrinologists went along with this. It goes against everything. That GIDS group had data that showed there was no improvement on that group of 44 and continued with this treatment …. It’s mal practice. I listened to Hannah Barnes a while back, she did a fantastic piece of research, her name should be up their with Helen Joyce.
But why, why would anyone want this?
If the NHS didn’t self insure (taxpayers money) the insurance companies would have made the premiums impossible or refuse to offer any cover. The value of the claims by those children maimed by the drugs and surgery as they become adults is going to be incalculable. I trust all the “doctors” will be struck off and their pension withdrawn.
I remember when this was going on that it felt not just wrong, but evil. Shame that this horseshit wasn't stopped sooner.
Still hasn't been fully stopped....
Parents should be held accountable also
I hope the tide is turning on this finally
Why?
Because maybe it does more harm than good. These children are mostly just mixed up kids with separated parents, with chaotic living arrangements. But by the time they adult and realise they have done things they cannot change unaliving themselves becomes a real option.
@@mickyfinn7969 Where is the evidence that these children come from broken homes?
The plethora of parents coming out to complain about these measures post Cass describes otherwise.
And more harm than good, you say, to need to question who are we thinking about here the individual or the society the individual is expected to be a fit and productive member of?
Surgery is not offered to those under the age of consent and hormonal changes can be largely undone and the treatment regret rate doesn't even register to have a number, but internationally it stands at 2%
The evidence is presented in this interview . That’s why the NHS a pulling out . They must be and should be terrified of the up coming law suits. It’s not the unidentified trans kids unaliving themselves is it. It’s the ones we know about who have seeked out medical “help” . Although I admit the unknowns are just exactly that. I for one hope to see long jail terms for the criminals who have been pushing this agenda, dishing out pills like smarties. Lying about the results for years to cover their own failures. The clinics that were once registered in the U.K have now moved abroad to countries who care nothing but can still operate and prescribe within the uk. Glad someone was brave enough to finally do a proper review regardless of the political response. Did the study look into social contagion as a cause in the rise of cases, or was that beyond it's scope?
the review is critically and scientifically pathetic. they threw out 98% of studies which disagreed with their aims and the methodology is flawed. not one trans person was consulted, so it was just cisgender transphobes spouting their own opinion. that is not science. but none of you care about that, you’ll cling onto anything to stoke your bigoted fire

How is transgender medicine any different to mental health treatment given the same processes are evident in both ?
GIDS did not do proper research beforehand? Will they be held accountable?

*How did the NHS allow gender ideology to take precedence over the care of vulnerable children?*
It's not as though they did this ignorantly, it was done with complete knowledge of what was lacking and the protests were made in real-time. They threatened anyone who didn't go along with the ideology. There was a directive from a higher authority that said we are doing this and if you don't comply you'll face consequences.
The civil war ( and I’m stretching the word ‘war’) is between the people who preach “inclusion and acceptance” and the rest of us who include and accept but don’t need to ‘demonstrate’, march, or rally.
That the evidence is in that puberty blockers followed by cross sex hormones and possible follow on surgery is a wholesale disaster for nearly all its px, YET many of the public (and this next part is truly terrifying) and many health professionals see the evidence as a speed bump to continue with medical interventions feels like we’re living in a gaslit nightmare that we can’t wake up from.
Doctors are supposed to be the gate keepers of protection, but so many of them are activists swimming in an ideological capture thinking they’re saving anguished children.
The religious fervor in transgenderism is breathtaking and horrifying. AND this comes from me, a doctor who has treated adult trans since 1983.
I wonder if the children who presented with gender dysphoria were asked how often they has access to the internet and what had they learned there about transgender ....impressionable children as young as six or seven access their parents or siblings i-pads or watch inappropriate TV programmes. What do the statistics tell us of how much the numbers have increased over the past couple of decades! It seems that in some schools ( esp in America) gender is taught as being optional. And grown men identifying as women ..where has that come from!!
Actually better minds have asserted the possible cause of the rise in transgender presentation has been caused by the societal acceptance of homosexuality. Of which the media industry has been keen to promote
It’s autogynaephilia - a sexual perversion.
Taught at school
What is understood to have been the cause of this moral panic is the observed societal acceptance of homosexuality. But it was reasoned seeking to destroy a smaller weaker community would set the stage for another go at the gays of whom remain the prime targets, to be closely followed by women's rights.

Puberty doesn't just change the body, it also floods the brain with the appropriate relevant sex hormones and that process changes and matures the child into a young adult. That brain flooding is an integral and essential part of neurological development, pruning and maturation. When you use puberty blockers to supposedly 'pause' puberty, you also interfere with these essential neurological changes. If children were left to go through puberty properly and fully (both physically and neurologically) with no pharmaceutical intervention, something like 80/90% of any perceived incongruence is brought inline with their chromosomal sex and they move forward and on with their lives without further concern. It's a very small number that continue forward with any issue and, yes, those children should have counselling and psychological support to help figure out what those issues might be. There are many reasons children (and adults) don't like their bodies and, for many, sadly, abuse is one of them. And that needs much more intensive support than dishing out cross sex hormones and offering horrendously invasive and irreversible surgery to otherwise healthy body parts.
Confucius said this sentence word by word: "One's body, hair, and skin are received from one's parents, and one dares not damage them. This is the beginning of filial piety." There must be something going on in those days related to damaging one’s hair and body to trigger him to say this. Clearly Confucius won that battle then. After 2000 years, it seems to have come back. Let’s see how human society will survive this round.
and we must not not NOT allow trans activists to walk away from this with all the blame being laid at the feet of the health service. GPs were harassed if they refused to refer kids. And the "kids" also need to take some responsibility here. The age of criminal responsibility is 12. Teenagers are accountable for their own actions. Choices have consequence and to the teenagers who threatened suicide if their parents didn't support them to transition have to look in the mirror and accept that they are partly responsible for their own circumstances.
People should be in jail for this

I have worked with transgender and mosaic klemfelters people. The Klemfelters people I have worked with all wanted to have the features of the gender they were brought up in enhanced and actually had no issue with their gender identity.
I grew up as a "tomboy". I was constantly mistaken for a male child, had a deep voice, enjoyed activities associated with boys and recall choosing to go to see "where eagles dare" with my father and brother over "Watership Down" with my mother and sisters. However at no point was I ever confused about my gender. My pain came from other girls who thought I should have more in common with them then I did. But I was always "me" and these things were part of my personality and who I was. I was proud of my differences and uniqueness. There were no gender labels then and I was perfectly happy identifying as a girl who enjoyed boys activities and had more in common with boys than other girls. I often wonder what path I would have been led down if I had grown up in the last 10 years.
I am well aware that there are those who have grown up in the wrong body and have suffered considerable pain because of this, as experienced by those I worked with who had undergone gender re assignment. Their plight should not be overshadowed by the toxic debate around the issue or any kneejerk reaction to the findings of the Cass report. An objective debate is what is needed to help those who find themselves in this position. Not the toxic debate that adds to the confusion experienced by children growing up in todays much more complex world that is driven by identity politics rather than an acceptance of each individual and their uniqueness for who they are.
Can people please stop blaming "the NHS" as if it is a person. There are very small groups of people who are employed within the NHS who did the crap. Not all NHS employees agreed with it but we were shouted down along with everyone else in the country.

Thanks Hannah. What a shabby building behind such a fancy sign! [01:06] What indication of poor outcomes does that project? It breaks my heart to think of the pain caused to children and their parents by this experimental "treatment". Who in the NHS(E) signed off that Transing [medically and clinically] children and adults should be deemed as treating "illness" worthy of FREE treatment? Is there not a problem when an organisation will tell parents that a trans child is better than a dead one. How did the people we respect lead us to such a dark place?
All treatment is experimental when it's new
Is that why trials are carried out with new medicines/procedures? Small numbers of subjects in the trials and careful monitoring of outcomes over time? After the rigorous conditions of no-harm have been met, then the efficacy of the treatment is assessed and then a cost benefit analysis is taken so the NHS is not robbed by astronomical Pharma pricing.
The above process appears to have been bypassed "because trans".

That's one reason people should be careful about attempting to stop free speech, it just antagonises people and gets their backs up. Not a smart move. I don't believe most of us have a problem with trans people, I believe it's the constant trans activism we don't take kindly to. Demanding rights to female only spaces, demanding access to girls and women's sports, demanding we address them this way or that way, shoving flags up all over the place, painting the roads with all sorts of rainbow colours etc etc. It feels like they trying to rub our noses in it and it gets on people's nerves. If they could just back off with a lot of that stuff people might not see them as the enemy which needs fighting. Trust me it's not a battle that can be won that way. They trying to push too far too fast, need a bit more patience and they gotta take people with them, currently they not doing that, the activism is causing more harm than it is progressing the cause. But likely they won't stop and be a bit more conciliatory, and if that's the case they gonna lose this war.
Get a grip. The report said people questioning their gender identity should receive decent, evidence based care like other patients do. Are you against that?
What a dehumanising report if ever there was one.
Yes, how terrible of the NHS to dehumanize so many children and steal their long term physical health based on their emerging sexualities. Classic eugenicist thought disguised as compassionate medical care.
That's what you meant, surely.
You find the truth dehumanizing?
@FarmerGwyn. That report will save so many lives. Having a so called trans child is like having a vegetarian cat.
'Treating' mental illness with hormones and bodily mutilation is evil.
@FarmerGwyn The Spectator video or the Cass Report itself?
