'The word "gender" was a magic cloak' - How the NHS got away with puberty blockers | SpectatorTV

  • How did the NHS allow gender ideology to take precedence over the care of vulnerable children? This week, the long-awaited Cass Review into the now-shuttered Tavistock Clinic was published. It found that the puberty blockers it prescribed to over a thousand children with gender dysmorphia was based on remarkably weak evidence.
James Heale, The Spectator's political correspondent, interviews the journalist Hannah Barnes, author of 'Time to Think'.

I'm sure most of them did. The "marketing and gaslighting by Mermaids, Stonewall and Pink News" captured the imagination of people who liked the warm fuzz of terms like "gender affirmation" and were manipulated by the concept, that was strongly pushed in the media that the only outcome to not allowing children to medically transition was a dead child.

Puberty doesn't just change the body, it also floods the brain with the appropriate relevant sex hormones and that process changes and matures the child into a young adult. That brain flooding is an integral and essential part of neurological development, pruning and maturation. When you use puberty blockers to supposedly 'pause' puberty, you also interfere with these essential neurological changes. If children were left to go through puberty properly and fully (both physically and neurologically) with no pharmaceutical intervention, something like 80/90% of any perceived incongruence is brought inline with their chromosomal sex and they move forward and on with their lives without further concern. It's a very small number that continue forward with any issue and, yes, those children should have counselling and psychological support to help figure out what those issues might be. There are many reasons children (and adults) don't like their bodies and, for many, sadly, abuse is one of them. And that needs much more intensive support than dishing out cross sex hormones and offering horrendously invasive and irreversible surgery to otherwise healthy body parts.

Choices have consequence and to the teenagers who threatened suicide if their parents didn't support them to transition have to look in the mirror and accept that they are partly responsible for their own circumstances.

I have worked with transgender and mosaic klemfelters people. The Klemfelters people I have worked with all wanted to have the features of the gender they were brought up in enhanced and actually had no issue with their gender identity.
I grew up as a "tomboy". I was constantly mistaken for a male child, had a deep voice, enjoyed activities associated with boys and recall choosing to go to see "where eagles dare" with my father and brother over "Watership Down" with my mother and sisters. However at no point was I ever confused about my gender. My pain came from other girls who thought I should have more in common with them then I did. But I was always "me" and these things were part of my personality and who I was. I was proud of my differences and uniqueness. There were no gender labels then and I was perfectly happy identifying as a girl who enjoyed boys activities and had more in common with boys than other girls. I often wonder what path I would have been led down if I had grown up in the last 10 years.
I am well aware that there are those who have grown up in the wrong body and have suffered considerable pain because of this, as experienced by those I worked with who had undergone gender re assignment. Their plight should not be overshadowed by the toxic debate around the issue or any kneejerk reaction to the findings of the Cass report. An objective debate is what is needed to help those who find themselves in this position. Not the toxic debate that adds to the confusion experienced by children growing up in todays much more complex world that is driven by identity politics rather than an acceptance of each individual and their uniqueness for who they are.
