    If you want to make your own here is the Amazon link. You will need to source 7/64 Samson Spectra rope to use with it.

    Leashes are so personal and an area of the sport that needs some redesign, imo. I bought the Kaohi with the calf attachment and I hate it. It's constantly wrapped 2x around my leg. I'm going to try to mount it to a waist harness like yours...maybe that goes better for me. Thanks for the video though, I feel everyone's input helps us all figure it out.

    For board, I use Oceanus localized to middle of back of harness, attached to harness with a snap shackle for emergency release. I really like the length of the reel leash for getting board away from me when coming in through the shore break. I am intrigued by the 6' calf leash.... but concerned it won't get the board far enough away from me and the wing. For wing, I wear the leash around wrist (but really want to lose this especially because of prior & potential future injury from wing getting dragged in surf shore break).

    Instead of a stopper ball I use a stainless steel welded ring. Same security with a Lark's head but allows clipping other things to it if I want to. I'm very happy with a waist board leash using the Oceanus reel leash.

      The Oceanus was never a solution for us. We used those back in the pioneering days of kiteboarding. Too many issues with them.

    Hi Dwight, The wing leash setup is brilliant and I've converted over all my wings. I have also been using the board leash but find it irritates my calf and is too long (always stepping on it).
    I picked up the North quick release single coil board leash and have it connected to my waist. Now there is no leash dragging or on the board. I added a second spectra line with ring that runs below the wing leash line and am very happy with this setup.
    Great work and keep posting!

      We never step on it. It’s super short leash designed for foiling. Maybe you got the wrong leash. We tried both to the waist. Harder to untangle when it goes wrong.

    That calf mount board leash looks awesome. Gonna order one. I use the long Ozone wing leash mounted to a waist belt (I’m not a harness user) so keeping the board leash well separated from the wing leash sounds like the perfect solution to my current waist mount board leash. Like you said, often a tangled mess. I also do the whole pre wrap thing for handle-pass-tacks like you described. Thanks for the tip Dwight! (Did you get the 5’ or 6’ version of the calf mount board leash?). Ok I see in the description you said 6’. All set!

    Beginner here but. I’m going with the NSI 5’ scrunchy wing leash and the Kaholi double coil. Both mounted to a Home Depot Dickies waist belt.

    I got so tangled yesterday, it was nuts!! I'll try to find the Kiohli calf strap. I tangle if both are coiled or if one is straight. Need to keep working on it...

    Hello Dwight - I'm just experimenting with leashes as well - from your video I guess you're guiding the leash on the back of your harness in order to avoid tangle with the hook, right ? Currently I've fixed my wing leash on the front and the board leash on the back of my waist belt. Any reason why you prefer coil for the board leash rather than ozone style ?

    • @foilsurfmachines
      @foilsurfmachines  Před rokem

      With board and wing leashes tied to my waist, it’s hard to get untangled sometimes. With board leash to my calf, my main concentration on leash tangles can be the wing only. I like my wing leash to my back so I can do behind the back wing pass tacks. Urethane surf leashes are still the best in surf. They are designed to absorb the pull of a wave without issues.

    Hey Dwight, thanks for the great video. I'm the guy that bought some of your F-One Swings a year or two ago and I really enjoyed them for my first quiver of wings. I'm going to order both the Kaohi ankle and calf leash to see which one I like best. You recommend the 6' leash for the calf leash. Should I go with a 5' leash for the ankle leash, since it seems like attaching to the ankle instead of the calf might effectively add some length to the leash? Also, Kaohi is saying their 7mm leash is their "go to" leash for wing foiling. Is there some reason that you think the 8mm leash is a better choice?

    • @foilsurfmachines
      @foilsurfmachines  Před rokem

      The coils get stretched out with age. Going for the 8mm might extend the life. That’s my hope. Ankle leash will drag in the water no mater the length. longer means less chance of kicking the foil and cuts.

    I am getting so annoyed with all these leashes that I am seriously considering having only one leash connecting the wing to board (using a plug leash placed on the front of the board) and call it a day. Of course the rider in not connected to the board anymore which has its risks, but this setup is nothing different from a windsurfing setup (except that it is the leash connecting the wing to the board and not a mast). Windsurfers have been doing it for decades and none are using leashes...Maybe a wing could catch more wind than an immersed windsurf sail and could potentially pull the board away from the rider faster? Thoughts?

    • @foilsurfmachines
      @foilsurfmachines  Před rokem +1

      A windsurf sail acts like an anchor when you fall off. The wing will fly and hop up and down and take your board away faster than you can swim. I’m pretty happy with my leashes now.

    • @wildhogget69
      @wildhogget69 Před rokem

      Coming from windsurfing background, I thought the same, but like you I thought, why not join the board and the wing together, then somehow, connect me to the leash via a clip or something that runs free from a waist harness. Like a weight on a fishing line set up.

    • @thefoildesigner
      @thefoildesigner Před rokem

      @@wildhogget69 i think the main risk is the wing flying around and pulling the board away from you very quickly. I think not using a board leash is doable though, as it is rather easy apparently to body drag downwind with the wing (there are some videos on CZcams on this subject). That could save the wing in case of wipeout in waves (so foil does not get close to it) and save you in case your feet come off the straps during a jump.

    • @louise8752
      @louise8752 Před 7 měsíci

      You need a leash connecting you to the foil board. A foil board can literally foil away from you when you crash. It's so annoying though!!
