Joaquin phoenix's joker is aimed at more mature audiences
I expected this guy to be radiating confidence, but he’s actually a bit shy and awkward. He’s so real.
He isn't always like this actually. But it really looks natural on him, that's great about him. I think here he was like this as he was thinking about his brother and what could've been....
He doesn’t like awards and awards shows, the Phoenix family don’t put much stock in them. I get the impression Joaquin acts because he genuinely loves it, and he’s mesmerising to watch, one of the best actors working today.
He was pretty much himself in the role too. No matter how much dollars and red carpet gets thrown at you, you can still be miserable / misunderstood. Happily Joaquin respects the art and is in a happier place than a decade ago.
Seems he does it all in his brother Rain's memory.
it's called anxiety lol
This man looks like he didnt want to go to the oscars but his agency wanted him to
Exactly
He needed to go, I think there's a reason no other actor has rejected the Oscar since Marlon Brando.
@@norm-bb3bb why he rejected the Oscar?
@@ferde1949 He rejected the Oscar as a protest for the treatment the native Americans received from the movie industry, two years before another actor rejected the Oscar.
Can you blame him? He knows award shows suck.
Genuinely think this might be the greatest Oscar award speech ever. He didn't talk about the film or role or even himself, but left all ego aside and just straight up told everyone that the world is horrible and we can all do better and change it to help everyone. Especially directed at the Academy/celebs where everyone is rich and powerful and can directly control/influence a better society - just literally telling them all to do something to help cos he knows they can. What an absolute goat.
instead of making this award all about him, he went up and had a clear agenda to use this moment as a platform to voice some real concerns and be a voice for the voiceless. i believe his whole family is vegan including the late river phoenix.
he didn't even want to be clapped as it was wasting precious speaking time.

Both him and Ledger did a great job!
Don Vito Corleone I literally don’t think I can decide who was better, because I don’t think either were better than the other
UK Trainspotter500 yea, i agree
@@Wirralspotter They were two different Jokers, at different times in their criminal careers too, and both portrayed their individual Jokers the best way imaginable. Ledger's Joker was more calculating, more criminal, more mastermind. Someone who has been living and breathing anarchy for years and years. Phoenix' Joker was a broken man, spat on by society, dealing with some serious mental issues, pushed to breaking point. Ledger's Joker was part of an action movie, Phoenix' Joker is more of a character study.
Ledger's Joker was meant to be dangerous, unpredictable, scary. Phoenix' Joker is in my opinion more unsettling, uncomfortable (in the best way), and calls for far more sympathy because of how the movie is set up. And that brings me to the main point: Ledger's Joker was an antagonist in his movie (even though he was definitely its star), Phoenix' Joker is the protagonist of his movie, so the view is completely different.
I don't think they deserve to be compared, they're in a class of their own. I adore both portrayals, each without diminishing my love for the other.
Montravius Daniel Jared Leto was awful
The dude had real serious important speech,
he didnt need applause,
he needed people to listen.
He stopped the audience twice from clapping.
There should be a documentary made just about this speech. The Phoenixs are first generation Hollywood, they were poor, radical liberals and already vegan by the late 1970s, which was rare.
If you ever happen to google early interviews with River as he broke through, and his family, you see he was the driving force for himself and his siblings becoming 'performers' to instigate social and environmental change. River wanted to write songs like John Lennon and be a musician with a message. The kids landed a talent agent and acting was where the money came from. As River developed a love of acting he realised he could utilise his fame for speaking out on causes he believed in (which is what he did consistanty) and use his money to fund environmental and community projects. He was the winner of one of PETAs first humanitarian of the year awards in 1990. The family have always used their famous surname to promote charities and causes. River continued making music, buying acres of first growth rainforrest and donating to social justice causes. For decades Joaquin has followed the same path, narrating environmental documentaries, serving on boards of charity organisations, using his name as a means to activism.
The Phoenix family now run the River Phoenix Center for Peacebuilding, which focusses on restorative justice.
Its so touching that Joaquin chose to come full circle by ending his recieving Hollywoods highest accolade (for which both he and River have previously been nominated) with a lyric written by a young River Phoenix, ensuring his message he carried from a little boy was shared with the largest platform imaginable.

Licken Hunstman What makes you say they’re mediocre? If they were, how come they’ve been nominated many times over the years and then finally won an Oscar?
We shouldn’t compare anyone to anyone, and we always should do our best to help and support each other, just like what Joaquin said in his speech. A-list actors are in their own class. DiCaprio, Bale, Phoenix and all other A-list actors are equally amazing, talented and unique in their own way. If you think they’re “mediocre” compared to Joaquin, that’s your opinion. But I encourage you to look up each of the “mediocre” actors’ performances that you’ve mentioned in a variety of movies in a variety of genres, and you’ll see how uniquely talented each of them are. E.g. DiCaprio in Basketball Diaries, or his role as Arnie Grape? Priceless. Raw acting right there. They’ve been in this industry for years, decades even. They’ve spent countless hours with so much blood, sweat and tears in their acting, molding, cultivating and making each of their character in each of their film come to life for our entertainment, that many of their movies reached international success and made global phenomenon time and time again, and their names will be remembered for generations to come.
Not only did they win the Oscars, but DiCaprio voices his support for the environment, for the indigenous people and the voiceless people who have been drowned out by greed and politics, while Phoenix voices his support for animals’ welfare, how everyone deserves a second chance, and how we should do our best to help each other grow, instead of bringing each other down. That’s courage and bravery right there. They’re using their voice to support the common good, and they’re putting action behind it.
Nothing about these guys are mediocre. These guys are all deserving of the Oscars from their longtime success and perseverance, to them using their voice as a platform for meaningful, relevant purpose, for a good cause and for the common good. Instead of comparing, we should be congratulating each and every one of them for a job well done. Hollywood is never the same without these guys, and we owe it to them for making such timeless, amazing contributions to the world, to the film industry, to the worldwide cultural phenomenon, and to humanity.

Finally--"Leaf" Phoenix brings home the "movie gold". It was long overdue. He should've already won for WALK THE LINE. He really did become Johnny Cash. He did. Really. See it again. Here, he says he doesn't even know where he'd be without "the craft". He said in an interview, "I suck at writing and painting. I tried both". Acting really did give him an ideal life. One that he deserves. I know he keeps complaining about being compared to his brother. His brother was an angel from above. I'm sure Riv himself would've won one of these things by now. I've got social anxiety and if I have to speak in front of people I speak just like this, you can hear it in his voice, it's scary
This man did such a good job, that I'm not seeing Joaquin Phoenix on the stage, all I'm seeing is The Joker, what a truly incredible actor, and his speech is just on another level, just like his work.
I think he had his brother River in his heart throughout that entire speech and probably just through his life and career.
RIP River
Joaquin ❤️
He's nervous, but on the surface he looks calm and ready.
Moms spaghetti.
Because he's acting the whole thing

Plot Twist: Joker is playing Joaquin Phoenix at the Oscars
He was better than ledger
Anuvhab Basu i say both were good but Joaquin was a little bit better
zeeshan mohamed Want another joke Olivia?
bzwaqah Sure
Anuvhab Basu calm down on that they both were good.
"run to the rescue with love and peace will follow" ~ river
River Phoenix RIP 😢 we are surely missed. "RUN TO THE RESSCUE WITH LOVE AND PEACE WILL FOLLOW". SUCH WORD'S OF WISDOM FROM SOMEONE SO YOUNG ❤
That's the best speech I have ever heard in an Oscar
This man didn't spend a second talking about himself, but addressing everything wrong with the world. Such a selfless, inspiring speech and we all need to follow the example
czcams.com/video/Zkjx2kCd6Zc/video.html funny video. you wont regret watching it if you like dark humour and clowns. its not click bait !
but who cares?
California Dreaming how ignorant do people get. that’s all u got from that speech?
Reviewbrah as a Jewish guy, I can tell you that before god allowed us to eat meat on certain occasions, he demanded a certain slaughter, the kosher slaughter. If the animal suffers even a bit before she’s dead the meat is can’t be eaten, + u are not allowed to abuse animals. Milk is not needed for our diet, not healthy and useless, therefor it’s pure animal abuse, and everyone is supporting it
He is right
All my respect to this sir, instead of being afraid of isolation and stigma, he used his important night to speak for the voiceless. Nobody is perfect, but with honest effort we all can be better every day.
Imagine he comes up, laughing then says: You wouldn't get it.
Ledger: Why so serious
Joaquin: HAHAHAHAHA You wouldn't get it.
What if he said wanna hear a joke

He should get an Oscar for this beautiful speech. What wonderful words.
This speech reeks of kindness, compassion and empathy😭😭
I like how he's not trying to hear the fake ass claps from the audience.
@@shawdiee5444 Yup 90% of the people clap their hands because others are clapping.. Reality..!
@@Sanjaykumar-nz4tf wow that's an eye opener
@@Sanjaykumar-nz4tf Oh I thought they stopped their one palm just a few milimeteres away from the other and the sound guy added the applause sound effect
Yes it's fake. If you look closely, they're actually clapping but not hitting their palms against each other. They're quietly clapping and the Oscars were just putting sound effects.

I love how proud keanu looks when listening to joaquins speech
Wasn't he best friends with his late brother River?
Yeah I saw it too... Love these guys, Keanu and Joaquin ❤️

Time lapse?

I felt bad for Adam Driver. He definitely deserved to win, but can't deny that Joaquin deserved to win even more.
Aham
seeing keanu here makes me emotional knowing he was like best friends with river

I drew Joaquin Phoenix and I'd be very grateful if you could give it a like

Working with Joaquin back when they made Parenthood is how he became friends with River too ✌🏼
That also made me emotional
You can tell he was using every ounce of his strength to not burst into tears.
GET BACK IN THERE TEARS
Every joule of his strength.

He’s an introvert, crowds is not his thing
Yea in the end when he talked about his brother, really sad
He inspired me so much. Ar the time of this speech I was omnivore. A year and a half later, this speech partially inspired me to become vegan.
I am absolutely head over heels in love with this man’s mind and spirit ♥️ I can’t get enough of how he thinks and what he has to say. Most underrated public figure of all time.

And River to Joaquin....”one day, you will be more successful than I am” ❤️❤️
Never did I know that Joaquin Phoenix was such an amaszing person! Thank you!
I like the fact he used the moment to be the voice of the voiceless. You don't have to like or dislike what he did, but you have to respect why he spoke up for many who's voices go unheard.
Nobody mentions how Leonardo looks at him with admiration?
I noticed that too.
I did and what makes me even more in awe is Leo was in the same club with River the night he passed, hoping to get a chance just to shake his hand. Sadly, he didn't get to meet his idol :(
czcams.com/video/Zkjx2kCd6Zc/video.html funny video. you wont regret watching it if you like dark humour and clowns. its not click bait !
Well, they are actors.
Leo is a huge fan of River if you didn't know. There's a video somewhere where young Leo is putting on a cap saying ''I look like River!'' I think Leo seeing Joaquin winning that Oscar made him really happy. As another comment was saying, he did indeed see River the night he he passed away but never got to meet him. He said that River looked really pale and he tried following him but he lost him in the crowd. Also I just want to add another thing: River was actually meant to take Leo's biggest role as Jack in Titanic, or at least that's what James Cameron wanted. But sadly River passed away 3 years before the movie started filming, so Leo was the best 'replacement' for River. I recommend you go check out River because he was one talented guy! He'd be standing next to Joaquin today in terms of acting if he had continued with acting.
Joaquin Phoenix is the second actor to win an Oscar for playing Joker.
He's also the first person to ever say "artificially inseminate a cow" in an Oscar speech!
We better as well do something about it than to just agreeing without changing our habits
No, i think Martin Landau said that first when he won his oscar in 90s. But Joaquin is 2nd winner to ever say that in his/hers Oscar speech.
Thats great! No one not even celebrities talk about animal rights enough.
this comment is underrated lol

Joaquin phoenix is much better Joker IMHO than Ledger's Joker
This movie is not about some dumb guy with bat suit doing stupid things with silly voice.
This movie is about A MAN.
@@loganshitsallbatmanmovies5465 we get it. 'Oh society is shitting on a person, oh heavens.' Yes I love Joker. But loving only 1 guy cause he's relatable or WOKE is stupid. Heath Ledger put his heart and soul the same as Joaquin Phoenix. I suggest you at least admire the past
lol. He’s literally an actor
He was so scared and holding back tears but no one can really imagine how it is to win an Oscar for best actor. That’s top tier right there. I would choke up too.
No hugs or kisses, he just walked straight to the stage. This guy didn't care he just got an oscar. Respect.
