    Hi Josh,
I had the opportunity to speak at length with the ISSF 50 meter prone world record holder about his ammo selection. It was interesting because he wanted ammo that could hold a tight group but if there’s an occasional flyer he was OK with that because with decimal scoring he could make up for the flyer with high value 10.9 shots.
Great video my friend. I too am in search of the perfect lot.

Thank you for the return information about not using a tuner when competing in the PRS and NRL style of shooting. Those two disciplines appear to be a good challenge.
My long distance rimfire shooting is with California ground squirrels. My Remington 541-S is quite accurate and will regularly kill squirrels out to 100 yards. I have killed many at a distance of more than 100 yards but those are difficult shots when I don’t know the exact distance and most of the time they don’t give me a second shot. Many of the squirrels I shoot at between 100 and 200 yards live to see another day unless I use one of my center fire rifles.
Thanks again for the informative videos.

When I bought my CZ 457 MTR 20", I tested Eley RWS Lapua and SK . Out of all the different ammos SK Rifle Match was the only one to shoot sub MOA out to 100 meters. It's sometimes difficult to find, but it's the only ammo that I shoot in competition.

Have you thought about using a tuner on your rifle? Tuners will make a difference with good ammunition. I use a Harrell’s tuner on all three of my Benchrest rimfire rifles and brass tuners I made for my sporter rimfire rifles.
Properly tuned they will tune out small variations in velocity and tighten your groups. They will not tune out a bad bullet/cartridge. Two of the contributors to barrel harmonics are hammer strike and bullet rotation as it travels down the barrel. The barrel doesn’t move up and down like a diving board but more of a rotational movement, this evident if you shoot groups at every full rotation of the tuner which is .025. You will see a change in the group location with each full rotation. The tightest groups seem to be in the same location on the target. You might find more than one tuner setting that group well. There is usually only one sweet spot.
Instead of shooting groups at every full rotation, I now start at the middle setting of 250 out of the .500, ½” total amount of adjustment.
If the groups are stringing I will lengthening the tuner and if the groups are round I will shorten the tuner. Most times you only need to move the settings 5 to 10 thousands of an inch which is 5 to 10 clicks during your initial tuning.
During an ARA match in my underground shooting range I will sometimes make a .001 adjustment, 1 click to tighten up the groups. It seems that there will always be flyers in a box of ammunition and some boxes will have a lot of big flyers. (Exasperating)
Thank you for the good and informative videos.
Contact me if you would like to chat.
    Jim

Hey Jim, ive ran a few tuners and from my findings for prs and nrl style shooting they dont work well for me.
I will say tuners do work and have improved my groups.
The issues i see is that rimfire is sensitive to environmentals etc.
So as conditions change from 7am (when we zero check) to 2pm the tuner settings were no longer always the right setting.
And as we cant check the gun or shoot sighters during a match i found a straight taper barrel with no tuner to be more consistent.

Josh, I have an idea I think Iv'e mentioned this a ways back but if you watch your videos when you go from one target to another the poi usually changes not much but it does I always wonder if there is a way to lock your rifle completely down so there's no way it moves and it won't matter if your shooting at a target per say just a sheet of paper will do shoot five shots then change the paper without moving the rifle and shoot five more then shoot it the way you normally do off the bipod I wonder if you'll see a difference ? I'm not into this type of shooting but obviously interested in the accuracy aspect so I enjoy your knowledge and testing good watching content !!

This is the part of precision shooting that gives me the most angst. First how do you pick a good speed ? If I have two (2) variables to work with, speed and lots, did I get a poor lot or my rifle does not like the speed? Most of the time I feel like I am at the craps table rolling the dice. Josh, anything words of wisdom would greatly be appreciated.

    • @PursuitofAccuracy
      @PursuitofAccuracy  Před 4 měsíci +3

Typically my rifles tend to shoot ammo's at a certain speed better than others.
Id be more worried about accuracy and the sd and es.

You do see group variance day to day. Its nearly impossible to account for it all.
Thats why i use the chrono data and the avg's of the groups to try and decide on a lot.
Ive found good ammo doesnt suddenly turn to crap because of changes. It may fluctuate a .1 group size day to day but generally if its good sd, es, and groups it stays consistently good.
