    Got a brick of this last week worst lot of premium ammo I've ever shot. Groups were all 2.5 MOA + with 20% extreme flyers from 50-200yards. SD was around 15 fps with an extreme spread of 54. I was curious so I weight sorted a few boxes. Weights ranged from 51.1 grains all the way up to 52.2 grains. Out of 3 boxes I only had 30 rounds at the medium weight of 51.5. In contrast Lapua Super Long Range generally gives me a weight variance of 51.7 to 52.1 with 85-90% of the rounds falling at the medium of 51.9. This first production lot of Eley Ultra might as well have come in a bucket and was an absolute rip off for the current price. S

      With 22lr every gun seems to have its favorite. My buddy's was Lapua Midus+. Mine likes Lapua Polar Biathlon. With Lapua PB, I had sub MOA out near 160yds. Around 1 MOA at 200yds. Extreme Spread of only 6.0 fps at the muzzle. 1106fps at 75° and the same at 45°F. For pratice we all loved SK Standard. It used to be $5/50 and most lots were good enough for pratice. Eley Club did well for me for pratice as well. Eley Edge and Lapua Center-X did well also... When Lapua came out with X-Act, I tried 1 box. It shot about the same as Center-X with my rifle for 3-4 times the price.

Next up was my Anschutz 1710 competition heavy barrel. Almost the same results. I also brought my Anschutz 54.30 Benchrest gun with a Kelby stock. That rifle really liked it. 1/4" group at 50 and right around a half inch at 100. Have a match tomorrow, rain permitting, where we shoot 200 yards. I plan on giving that ammo a try.

    This is really interesting. First - thanks for the Education about the bullet type in the lot number. Years back you used to be able to look up details about your specific lot number online but unfortunately they stopped doing that (or I can't find where it's at any more).
    I picked up 2 bricks of that Eley Club just last week because they were only 6 dollars a box on clearance at Canadian Tire.
    The groups were almost identical to yours in the CZ455 factory barrel. The Eley sport aren't all that expensive but was able to shoot a 82 on the dayatherange challenge target and with the club It was 70.
    Curious to see if they shoot better on that Bartlein I'm having spun up but at that low price I couldn't resist.
    Think you just saved me a lot of money after a frustrating wait time for these.. thanks for the review.

  • @ClaytonMacleod
    @ClaytonMacleod Před 26 dny +4

    They used the other bullet because it has a noticeably higher BC, and that gives a better possibility of better long range performance. Match/Tenex are intended to be shot at 50 metres, and the flat nose was supposed to provide certain benefits at that short distance at the cost of BC. But since you’re shooting at such a short distance they felt the BC penalty wasn’t a big concern. But when you’re shooting at much further distances then the BC starts to play a much larger role in your results, and it then makes sense to use the bullet with the much better BC. It is something like 16.67% higher. That’s considerable.
    edit: That 16.67% figure was from a different calculation than I remembered. This was from an equation that ignores atmospheric conditions, and only gives you a rough comparison as a result. I've now gone back and done it again with Labrabaco, since I've now found my records from those test days that have all the atmospheric conditions. The actual difference in RA4 BC between five lots of Eley Tenex (100 shots each) compared to a single lot of Eley Club (50 shots) ranged from just 1.7% to 5.7%. Also checked a single lot of Eley Club Biathlon (50 shots). Round and lot #, then first number is RA4 BC and second is BC SD.
    Club 3122-30110: 0.110424 and 0.0051
    Tenex 1022-03228: 0.10607 and 0.005756
    Tenex 1022-02294: 0.108514 and 0.005846
    Tenex 1022-02296: 0.106843 and 0.005546
    Tenex 1022-04336: 0.107516 and 0.005901
    Tenex 1022-06176: 0.104101 and 0.004641
    Club Biathlon 3122-30152: 0.109813 and 0.00565
    So the difference isn't as dramatic as I thought earlier, but is still consistently less for the Tenex style bullet compared to the Club style bullet. All else being equal the Club style bullet is going to be less affected by the wind. However, Tenex and Match tend to be more consistent in overall characteristics than the lower tier rounds, so it could be a wash anyway. But as far as examining just the bullet itself goes, the Tenex style bullet does exhibit more drag.

      @mrsmith8436 Před 25 dny +1

      According to the Eley patent the flat nose with the small tip protrusion is actually more accurate because it shifts the center of pressure away from the center of gravity. This was discovered in development as the design was intended to provide a reservoir for lubricant on the tip but they discovered the shape itself made the bullet more stable and more accurate

    • @ClaytonMacleod
      @ClaytonMacleod Před 25 dny +1

      I built a mostly kidd 10/22 this year and shoot silhouette. I have done a lot of customizing to the gun with the stock and sights by making my own parts to fit the build. Local stores don't have much to choose from but I tried a variety of ammo and found CCI SV gave the best groups and was most consistent, although I didn't have any eley or other high end ammo to try. 3/8" at 50 yards and 3/4" at 100 meters was my best with a 20x scope, from the ultra light kidd barrel. CCI SV has gotten me 2nd and 3rd place for a number of matches against all other types of 22 guns and even eley ammo, at the local match, so it seems like it is working fine, especially for the price at 5 bucks per box.

    I have a CZ 457 in a MDT chassis that I recently put a Lilja barrel on. I have been struggling to get it to shoot reliably in any way.
    I have lot tested several ammo's including over 15 lots of Eley Match and although I have been able to get good groups many times the next magazine may be horrible. I am trying to get below .3 at 50 reliably and am struggling. Any ideas? the last test I did showed great promise with 3 5 shot groups in the .2's and a 15 shot group in the low .3's so I ordered 4 more boxes for further testing and now everything is horrible with groups over 1" (almost all of them). The only major change that I can mention is that the first testing was in 95 deg high humidity and now it is 75 and nice, but if the weather makes that kind of change then I am done with the rimfire game and am going back to just centerfire.
    Any thoughts are greatly appreciated, I almost feel like I got a bad barrel, I swear my factory MTR barrel was not this picky and am planning to put it back on at this point and see if I have any lots that shoot good groups.

    I dont like the way that Vudu bolt hangs up. You are always smooth in your cycling but for what you pay for a gun like that I would expect it to be butter smooth.

      I have my chambers done up shorter so the bullet engages the rifling. The bolt is ultra slick it's just needing a nudge at the very end with those round nose to allow it to close. It's just a side effect of chambering it that way but tends to be more accurate for me with my regular ammo

      @@misterlewgee8874 Ah, ok. I see what you’re talking about now. The problem is the ShotMarker system works by listening for the supersonic crack of the bullet, and triangulates shot position from that. It won’t work with subsonic ammo, as most 22 LR ammo is. No supersonic crack, no shot detection. And the electronic targets that are available that do work with subsonic 22 LR ammo are in the neighbourhood of $20,000. Those work via optical detection. But given their pricing, basically nobody has them. Even the older type that works by detecting the sound of the bullets hitting a backer aren’t cheap. Cheaper than $20,000 but still not cheap. And I’m not sure if that backer type has software that would be comparable in providing displays like that. Maybe. I don’t really know. I didn’t look into those ones as much because I didn’t like the idea of having to constantly buy the moving backers. The ShotMarker is very reasonably priced, but unfortunately won’t work for 22 LR target shooting with typical target ammo. Shooting with Stingers would work out to, what, 75 yards or something? 125? I forget exactly where that stuff goes subsonic. But it isn’t target ammo and shoots like crap, hehe.

    Good Sir, I have observed this before........ IF....all else are consistent: Bullet weight & shape, powder charge, uniform rim priming........ then what I found was the bottom / base of the bass was not uniformly square to the center line of the bullet. That is, the base should not be rounded in any way, but consistently flat for each batch. The shape of the base of all brass must be identically flat and perpendicular to the center axis of the bullet. If not, this variance alone can produce a difference in the internal combustion of the powder, producing an uneven thrust behind the bullet. When I discovered this, I found a gauge that precisely measured the flatness of .22LR brass. I would sort my unfired .22LR brass into ones that had the same degree of bass squareness. The gauge would had a scale from 0 to about 8. When sorted, you put all the 3's into one box, all the 6's into another and so forth. Using inexpensive standard velocity ammo in my match Anschutz, shooting the same number sorted 22's performed the same as the best match ammo at the time. More than anything, this is a indication of quality control not checking for the uniformity of brass base, and keeping it within specs. Just thought I would pass this idea along to you accuracy Pro's. Thanks for the great vid! FMR Intelligence Officer
