- Virgil Abloh (Rockford, IL 1980) is an architect, engineer, creative director, and designer. After earning a degree in Civil Engineering from the University of Wisconsin Madison, he completed a Master´s degree in Architecture at the Illinois Institute of Technology. It was here that he learned not only about design principles but also about the concept of collaborative working. He studied a curriculum devised by Mies van der Rohe on a campus van der Rohe had designed. After completing his degree, Abloh soon took on the role as a creative director for Kanye West and for West´s creative think tank “Donda“.
Throughout Virgil Abloh's career, he has received numerous awards in the realms of art and design. Off-White c/o Virgil Abloh™ began in 2012 as an art project titled PYREX VISION. In 2013, Off-White c/o Virgil Abloh™ was introduced as a seasonal men's and women's fashion brand, which has grown to include the production of furniture designed by Abloh. In 2015, Off-White™ was one of eight finalists for the LVMH Prize in Paris. In 2016, he was inducted into the BOF 500 “The People Shaping The Global Fashion Industry” List. In the same year, he was one of five nominees for the category of International Urban Luxury Brand at The British Fashion Awards. In 2017, Abloh was one of five nominees for the category of Swarovski Award for Emerging Talent at The CFDA Awards. Additionally, in 2017, Abloh was selected as a special guest to show his Spring Summer 2018 Men's OFF-WHITE c/o VIRGIL ABLOH™ Collection in Florence, Italy during Pitti Immagine Uomo 92. In 2019, Abloh's work will be the subject of a focused retrospective at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago, where he will show new work alongside previously unseen works from his past.
The craziest part is that he knew his time was limited and he did not waste a second of his life. Im trying to change my life and Virgil is a huge inspiration.
Exactly.
just commenting to remind you to read your comment again.
He definitely said 50 YEARS 😅 19:20
No one cares about your problems, dont come to youtube to fish for sympathies
@@russia4biden221 I dont think i spoke about any problems in that comment. When I posted it I honestly didnt think anyone would even pay any mind to it. Dont come and spread random negativity just because your life sucks and you have nothing better to do.
The ending of this video will be in his life documentary. I saw another clip today where he is talking about a tin can, and he explained how if you put the tin can in all white room at an Art Gallery, it's art. If you see that same tin can in a garage, you'd think its junk and you'd throw it away. He was making an analogy as to what he does, which is design the room around the tin can and make it accessible.
Imo this perfectly encapsulates the idea of him writing on the shoes. It's an idea thats so basic, and so rudimentary, but he designed and presented it in a way where it's cool. Thus everyone is throwing their shoes at Virgil for him to sign it.
RIP Virgil.
I'm trying to find the video of the "tin can" analogy. Have u come back across the video?
@@vicekingryu did you find it if not i can dm it too you on insta
@@vicekingryu risd talk
genius. I think we've all kind of noticed this as some point but didn't think it as deep and simple at the same time that it is.
That’s a great observation. He really did make his signature a fashion statement in a way
never expected to get emotional over a lecture but knowing this gem of a human has passed leaves a black stitch on my heart, rest in power virgil.
wanted to add i didnt know the ending was felt to so many people as well, movie esque. truly beautiful.
Any self respecting student of design should watch this video and study Virgil's process and progress. His legacy is still yet to be realized. RIP Virgil
people are sleeping hard if they haven't noticed his work. it's disrupted all of fashion

You must have been living a very sheltered life if this is all it took to change your sad life
“Once you learn the ethos of what you love and dig deeper, then you’re able to turn the wheel left or right “
I can't tell you how many times I've watched this. Free game, rip Virgil
This ending brought me to tears for real, I can't believe he's gone 😭🕊️❤️
remember what he says about mentors, and that he gave us the cheat code! but yeah the end brought me to tears as well. screen recorded and added to my mood board for sure.
Someone get this mans a glass of water
rest in peace to the legend. inspired an entire generation of artists, designers, musicians, and everything in between
Design is not art
This is such an inspiring conversation. I feel so sad to know him after hearing about his leave. The ending is amazing. It is a complicated feeling that you laugh at his speech ending and you realize he has already left. The good thing is even if someone leaves, he still leaves something meaningful for people. Rest in Peace.
well said, I couldn't put it better
That ending is so surreal.
The end of this literally feels like the end of a film. Long live the King
That ending is pretty darn touching.
I almost cryed at the end 💙
Awsome talk..but the end caught me off guard when the shoes came at him..I started to cry..very inspiring luv this guy..
ending is amazing
Ending was awesome. That must have been a surreal feeling for Virgil.
do you think it was surreal for him? i feel like he knew exactly what would happen and invited it with so much playfulness. he was almost juggling the shoes, kicking them like hackey sacks or soccer balls before practice haha. and there had been a few references prior about throwing shoes, and fucking up shoes because why not. it was such a moving ending because he gave so much during the talk, literally he gave us the cheat code at the end of the video (it’s in the bullet points). and then offered more to the irl audience when he knew he had less time than all the requests for questions and autographs would take. this is one of, if not *the* most generous creatives that we will come across in our lifetime. and he kept it light and fun, because life isn’t that serious and same goes for design. i like that your comment made me think and lightened the mood. bc ngl i totally got emotional at the end 🤣
@@livdiamond what bullet points?
Virgil Abloh 2017: KEEP OFF rug will be cost under $50.
IKEA 2019: KEEP OFF Rug $500.
Right, I'd never seen this lecture until now and he was really out of touch with the coat aspect. Even a mediocre rug that big would be at least a couple hundred. Lol. RIP
exactly why he knew they’d be mad if he speculated on their pricing haha. curious if it was a rev share, guessing it probably was not. if it was it would tell us a lot about how he valued fiat $
I watch this at least once a month man RIP Virgil
So much to learn still. Thanks for the lessons and insights Virgil. RIP
i love how it all breaks into this beautiful chaos of kids throwing sneakers at the virgil haha amazing talk!
Watching this makes me so emotional. People like him are meant to live forever.

Amazing
what a legend.
WE MISS YOU MAN.... SERIOUSLY...!
rest in peace KING!
RIP to one of the greats!
I can only imagine HOW MANY copyright layers works for him (in terms of US law system)😂 thanks for sharing
how ironic that lawyers are *sometimes* the dearth of creativity, sharing, and ideation, while they almost single handedly protect IP (one of the only things creatives can truly own and monetize). i like how much virgil touches on this theme - multiple truths, sometimes in total conflict, all correct at once. shows a deep understanding of the world’s workings, which is helpful for innovation/rule breaking and problem solving.
also - if i had to guess, probably more lawyers work for the companies to whom he’s beholden by contracts, i hope he didn’t have too many on his payroll bc overhead
30:24 I'm one of those people! Legends never die!
ill have to watch this twice to understand everything lol
DILLITAUNT was here for the knowledge!
