Every foreign visitor mentions our portions sizes 😂. Also the comment about lack of fences around our "compounds". 😂😂❤ Believe me there's an invisible fence that the neighbors recognize on one another's property.
Lol! Yeah, everyone always talks about our portion sizes, to go boxes and our tipping culture.
San Francisco is particularly quirky, I'm American and would be shocked to be asked for a tip at a gift store. That's weird to most of us as well.

I feel that tipping culture has to stop. It is the employers duty to pay their employees right. If that will increase the price of the good or service, do it. Don't make the price less and then pressure the customer to pay extra for tips. Sad that this is catching on in India too...
Hmm I think it is a cultural thing, and also increasing the prices may not equal to increasing the employees wages. And have to consider that we’re paying for the food + ingredients + chefs skill etc. I guess the ambiguity on how much exactly to tip is what confuses most non-Americans

Costco is a bulk buy store, there are so many grocery stores where you can get smaller sizes
I was in Chicago last month and I would reiterate on the facts you spoke, it was much of a culture shock for me the first time around as well. Here are some of the observations I had made:
1) We went from Illinois to Michigan which is like the neighbouring state, and I was surprised to encounter a time zone difference of an hour like how big is this country!
2) Since I was usually travelling around downtown on my own and thanks to my Indian instincts, it was difficult for me to greet back people and also, I would be quite confused if I was asked to mention a tip at stores and I would leave by paying none. As much as it would hurt me, I really wasn’t comfortable sharing a tip for nothing.
3) If you are walking around with a dog, be prepared to talk to so many strangers, like a lot. Utterly anxiety inducing for an introvert like me lol.
4) It was pollen season while I was there and omg, the size of pollen and it was raining down on you like snowfall.
5) If you visit the suburbs, you’ll be pleasantly surprised to see bunnies and squirrels jumping around in your backyard and you’d feel like you’re sitting in Narnia.
6) Also, the self ordering kiosks at restaurants and self check out kiosks at stores made life so much easier. Like they trust people so much that they wouldn’t just stash in an unbilled product into their bags.
7) I went to Costco seeing your video and ordered myself a slice of pizza but I was underwhelmed 🥺 But the sizes of the stuff there were indeed ginormous. Perfect for anyone who buys in bulk for their houses, they’d be saving on a lot on their membership.
8) In my previous visit to USA, I had seen mugging first hand and also, racial slurs passed at me (all of it was in downtown) and it had made me quite wary of walking around alone especially in the city. I signed up for a few interesting walking tours of the city’s neighbourhood and literally everyone had the same thing to tell me- to get back home before it gets dark.
Oh and McDonalds is literally a deserted land in USA whereas people here in India line up for food at McDonalds 🥲

There are 5-6 time zones in US, it's a very big country, their tipping culture is just weird. I'm moving to US this Fall, and wonder I'll have to adjust to quite a few things now😅
The poverty and homelessness in Manhattan took me by surprise as well. I saw a homeless woman digging out a half eaten sandwich from the trash at Penn Station and eating it. And it really hit me hard. I had read about the homelessness crisis but still didnt expect it in heart of Manhattan.
Watching this video made me laugh a lot! Reasons being I so related to your thought process or the things that I would be surprised to see were the same things even you were surprised by 🤣😂. One question, can we install jet sprays in toilets there as an extra accessory ? Or it’s just not available, period?

I grew up in the US, but I hate the tip culture, it has blown up a lot recently. As for service-- I think the hospitality in India is much better, they even serve for you there. Packing your own box is normal here. As for SF city, the homeless and poverty is very well known there. The city in itself is quite bad, but all of the neighboring cities are very safe.

Here in Australia, we don’t tip at all but the service is even better because the minimum wage is very high.

I'm American. And, the small talk thing changes between parts of the country, in the Midwest it's most common. It's less common in the East. And, the homeless issue is bigger in California than the rest of the country. There are homeless people everywhere, but California is in the middle of a major housing crisis right now.
Yes record no of people are moving out of state due to several reasons, one major being high costs of living. And work from home allows people to do the same

So ideally you don’t have to tip in souvenir places … the person there must have recognised you as a tourist.. it’s absolutely ok to not tip .. I give 15% most of the time .. but if I really love the service then 20% … expensive places will have 25-30% surcharge anyways so I won’t tip there … then onto SFO … it’s quite common to see in downtown sfo .. in fact most downtowns will have ppl like that but if you really want to see the mansions head to the burbs … the reason why they ask to pack your own leftovers cause they are just that and it’s demeaning to ask somebody else to do it for you .. also health code requires that to avoid cross contamination in the kitchens … US makes you humble in many ways especially to treat each other well and to do your own thing … you learn a lot. I love the small talk it instantly makes you feel good. The only ones who will not greet you is a fellow Indian …it’s sad but idk
I had one experience in Sudarshan silks blore. The sales girl/boy who had to actually help with with the selection never approached me I had to struggle finding the sarees and after all that I myself took the sarees for billing. And suddenly one female popped out grabbed the sareez and took me to the counter. And said said number may be its her code during the billing. I think that's to add up the incentives. I was like for more than a hour nobody even cared and now suddenly how come this. People should have a little loyalty
Either they will overwhelm in the name of help.....or nobody turns up or seems least interested when asked.....I have faced this a lot....so, when few of them approach me, I tell them with a smile that I will look around, and if I need help I will ask them.....this supposed helper suddenly appearing has happened with me...and I have no inhibitions..,I told them softly that the people there had no clue what I was asking for 😂
I agree with you on the tipping culture being out of control in the US. It is standard to ask “do you want to add a tip” for the most ridiculous things. Get very comfortable saying no. I only tip at sit down restaurants, spa and one on one service places. If I have to pick up, I don’t pay or pay minimal( like say someone has to pack me a salad from a salad bar). A note to visitors to USA…downtown areas of most major cities are higher in crime and have poverty and drug issues. SFO probably takes the cake in this regard. There are seedy areas in other cities, but most places are completely safe. I go to supermarkets alone around 10, with no issues. We’ve driven back from movies after midnight with no issues. But then this is in the suburbs where a large population lives. Downtown is where offices are and people commute there for work mostly. The major concern here is the gun culture and how aware and cautious everyone needs to be. Otherwise beautiful country, beautiful people. When you mentioned packing your own leftovers, it was eye opening. The US is exemplary in teaching one humility. All professions are valued and workers respected. Would I expect the waiter to pack my leftovers? Heck no. Why would I? There are college students who wait tables and people between jobs who do that. I see our own Indian moms who work the grocery checkout line at Walmart and Kroger, these days. Their work is respected and they do it with pride. I grew up in India and can relate to being waited hand and foot. It seems like luxury but is in fact exploitation. what does it do to the psyche of the people, doing the waiting on you for a few rupees? It’s not like they are paid handsomely for the job. I can understand the contrast in expectations though.

I see how different perspectives can be when you go as a visitor and when you live in a place. I have lived there for 4 years, and my perspective is completely different. Portion sizes being big, every other item in the supermarket being big is one of the main reasons why obesity is such a huge problem there.

Even in india restaurants have taxes right. We pay a service tax on food bill and additionally there is service charge also which is kind of considered as tip. So in India we have service tax (mandatory govt tax) & service charge (this is not mandated by govt but ppl pay for the service without fussing if they like it). So how r u saying this is a cultural difference with India?
