Grew up in Buffalo watching Sabres and Leafs, but especially remember Sabres-Canadiens games in early-mid 1970s. Will never forget hearing Doucet singing O Canada, still brings a tear watching him sing it.

I'm American and I think Canada has a lovely anthem, and Australia, too. I happen to sing both of their anthems, along with mine, from time to time.

The anthem is perfect this way: first half in French, last half in English. Wonderfully sung! No wonder the Canadiens did so well in the years when he started the game!

He'd often substitute "we stand on guard for rights and liberty" for "we stand, we stand on guard for thee".

He must have been a fascinating person! I didn't take him as the type who jogged and exercised! He died far too young...just imagine had he lived into his 70's, the Habs could have brought him back in '86 and '93 to sing in the playoffs! Listening to him sing in this video gave me goosebumps and it's 30 degrees today! lol.

He was taken out by a brain tumor. Nothing in the way of self-maintenance to be done about that. Doucet really was before my time, but you can hear and feel how powerfully he sang both anthems.

Absolute legend. As a kid, I was die hard Habs fan in Halifax. In elementary school, I’d have a sleep over at my nans apartment regularly as she was a huge Habs fan too. As a matter of fact, She was in Montreal at a restaurant when all of a sudden Henri & Rocket Richard walked in. She got their autographs for me & I ended up losing it when we moved. Anyway , my last name is Doucette. I remember being angry it was spelled differently than Doucet. Lol. I started handing in my assignments at school minus the T & E - teachers never questioned me about it haha

Roger Doucet changed the singing of O Canada forever. Before him, it ended with "guard for thee" as sol, [down] ti, [down] doh. After Doucet, and after Habs games on Saturday night, it became "sol [up] ti [up] doh. It was so much more exciting to flip the octave that it caught on everywhere, and did not require an Act of Parliament to do so. It just took the Habs, the CBC, and Roger Doucet. Mercy, Roger.

I agree. In fact, I once ran into Wayne Messmer (who originally sang for the Chicago Blackhawks, until 1995), and told him that he shares a place on my list, as one of the best National Anthem singers, of my life, for both Canada, and the United States. With that said, I included Roger Doucet, and he was so honored to hear me include him, in my list, since he too, thought that he was one of the best inspirations for him, to sing in front of a crowd of many, with his warm and booming voice, for all of Chicago, and the nation to hear.
