  • In this short documentary from the Canada Vignettes series, a Saskatchewan grain elevator is moved across the snow-covered prairie to a new home after nearly a half-century of use. The film follows the lifting and transporting of the 9-storey, 200-ton structure, and examines the feelings of the people as they witness the final passing of their town's one and only grain elevator.
Directed by Larry Bauman - 1985

I am from the Greenstreet area and enjoyed seeing the familiar faces in the video.
So glad this is available to view. It reminds me of the trips to Greenstreet as a kid. Delivering grain to the elevator, then buying a pop and a chocolate bar at Les Leers.

I'm from St. Walburg. Still farm in the area. This was the year I was born. Remember dad talking about the time they moved the elevator from Greenstreet. Sad that all the elevators closed and rail lines got torn out. Gotta go so damn far to sell grain now.

Do you know if it is still standing somewhere? Austin Tischler who does CZcams video's went to look for it & unsure if he found it.

@Christine Novack no it’s gone. It was moved to Marshall, Saskatchewan where it was set up beside the Pioneer grain elevator there for additional grain storage. It’s been tore down for 20 years now.

In case you are wondering, the elevator was being moved from Greenstreet to Marshall, Saskatchewan (about 20 miles away). This is near Lloydminster.

I just love these things. They're old but the best of them are still thought-provoking and moving. My favourite one is The Novelist.

The year I was born. I'm born and raised and still farm just a little bit northeast of Greenstreet an hour give or take. Sad how the rail lines are torn up, and all the grain elevators are moved or knocked down, or just sitting there lonely and forlorn.

Looked liked they were travelling pretty fast, especially for a such a tall elevator. 🙂

Such a cool video. I did house moving but can't even imagine something like this. I don't think you'd ever get a permit for that these days.

I believe the grain elevator's annex is still in Greenstreet to this day

Wonder if they did it in winter because the dirt would be more solid. At first I was baffled but I guess its the off season as well.

When should we move this thing?
Well let’s do it in the dead of winter… make it interesting
