- These prairie icons have dominated the landscape of Western Canada for more than a century.
The traditional wooden grain elevator of Western Canada is a symbol of the region's rich agricultural heritage.
These elevators were built in the late 19th and early 20th centuries designed to receive, store and ship grain in bulk to market.
The elevators were usually located near railway lines to transfer grain to rail cars for shipment to market.
They could be found close enough together on the rail line to allow most farmers to make a round trip from farm to elevator in one day.
As the grain industry grew, so did the number of grain elevators.
By the 1930s, there were upwards of 6,000 wooden grain elevators in Western Canada.

Living in western Canada there is always something special about seeing these old grain elevators standing tall in the open prairie. Whenever I see them they also remind me of the lighthouses that dot the coast line where I grew up. I enjoy capturing their images when I can because they are losing their battle with time. Each year more and more are dismantled or destroyed with very few preserved. Take care everyone and I will see you on the next!
We lived between two grain elevators only miles apart when younger along the rail. To this day, one of them still remain. Thanks for the share.

These old grain elevators look so cool. I wish they were all being preserved as interesting historical reminders of a bygone era. I really enjoyed seeing and learning about this. Thanks for getting these landmarks on film before they disappear from memory.
I am happy that there are some out there that are preserved at least and others that are still standing to keep the memory alive of some of our history.

We have a lot of these in eastern Washington as well as old barns. It's always sad to see them disappear as it's part of my image of "home" to have them dot the fields

Those buildings are beautiful and so important in their day. At Water St and Queen St in Port Perry, Ontario, they have one and it's right downtown. It's restored a painted a beautiful red.

it was sad to see the Bents elevator damaged after the storm we had. It was the first elevator I've ever climbed.
I am not sure about its current condition if it is still standing. Hopefully.

Great videography again! Is there any initiative from the government to preserve these buildings? One could argue they are part of the national cultural heritage, and soon everything will be gone if nothing is done...
There are some that have been saved and preserved, yes. Would be nice to see much more of our history preserved, though.

Hi Wade, Has anyone considered petitioning the Heritage Minister to save these grain elevators, I.E. Adopt an elevator and restore them as heritage monuments? It was just a thought !!
Some are being saved and there are a number of them that are heritage sites now but most are privately owned and the owners just don't have the money and they become a liability.
@@ExploringwithWade That's why I asked about the Heritage Minister and money from the Govt to save those buildings. It seems they have a lot of money to throw around as of late, maybe if they used it properly we could cover them on way or another? It was just a thought.

Any chance you will have a video on Bents? From a brief fly around the grain elevator it looks like there is some other buildings there?
No unfortunately not this time. The owner of the townsite buildings is different from the elevator and they don't want people over there and have had problems over the years.

How tall were these elevators, typically?
I think they range quite a bit, but I have seen mention 40 to 60 feet.
