  • Pharaoh Lake Wilderness - Adirondacks, NY
    July 27th - 30th, 2018
    Itinerary
    ---------
    Thursday - Trailhead to Oxshoe Pond
    Friday - Oxshoe Pond to Clear Pond
    Saturday - Clear Pond to Pharaoh Lake (either #3 or #5)
    Sunday - Pharaoh Lake to Trailhead
    Located on the line between Essex County and Warren County in the towns of Schroon, Ticonderoga, Hague and Horicon NY, it is a 45,883 acre wilderness area in the Adirondack Park. It features over 60 miles of trails, 14 lean-tos, and 39 bodies of water.
    As a disclaimer, where I parked isn't technically legal. Crane Pond Road is a very controversial 2 mile stretch of dirt road that passes through Forest Preserve land and a wetland. Over the years it has fallen into disrepair but is always rebuilt by someone. Some say it is locals, some say it is the DEC doing it but keeping it quiet. Regardless of which, as of filming, the road is still open and there were plenty of trucks up at the end of the road.
    Also note that a 4x4 is recommended with a good deal of clearance. If you try to go back there in a small car just remember I warned you. There is a parking area just before the road turns right sharply. You can't miss it. It'll add some distance to your hike but as an alternative you can come in at Putnam Pond and still build a great multi-day trip back there. The Putnam Pond entry point brings you very close to my day 1 camp at Clear Pond.
    Other than that, please leave no trace anywhere around the area. The more we can keep a place like this pristine the more inclined the powers that be will keep the road open.
    Thanks for checking out the video, share it around if you enjoyed it.

    Another great video Joe! I did the same trip at the end of June, camping at that Crab Pond site (really noisy!), Clear Pond and the Split Rock leanto. FYI - the DEC is establishing a new campsite beyond the lean-to. Only saw two groups the whole 5 days. Only drag was that I had to hike up that stupid road to get to the trail head. Happy trails.

      Thanks John! That sounds like a nice trip you had. I want to give that site a shot just once, the first time I saw it I fell in love with it. That's good news on the new site. I may go up one more time this year in the Fall so I'll see if any progress is made.

      Until this year, the last time I was in there was the early 80s when I lived in Ticonderoga. I really like those ponds and they're a little over 3 hours away so it is a good 2-3 trip for me. I just have to put up with walking the road. I walked out to the site on Horseshoe and might camp there one time; there's something to be said for being surrounded by water on three sides. I guess DEC closed the campsite on the peninsula just past the Split Rock leanto because of overuse, but the new site is not far beyond it. It looked pretty nice; there are boulders on the shore that one can perch on. They were establishing a tent site and there were trees for hanging. Did you hit blow down at the bridge below Grizzle Ocean and on the trail through Hay Meadow marsh? Thanks again for posting the videos; yours, Justin's and Jared's inspired me to put down the paddle and put-on the pack again.

      Very glad to hear we inspired you! There was just one small spot where a couple of trees were across the trail but it looks like a lot of cleanup took place. Overall the entire trip was met with well-groomed trails and only one spot where I had to actually leave it to get around a tree (looked recent too so it must have just happened, wish I could remember exactly where it was).

      HAHA, oh yeah I remember the holes in my pants. I actually have a picture from when we reached the summit of Champlain Mtn and you can tell there is a huge hole right in the crotch! So funny!!!

    Nice video ! Those trails look like they are manicured ! You know what the Whites have to offer ! Night and day difference. I really despise those shelters in NY , the few that I have seen. Just beaten down mud pits, just too many people ! I will look forward to your NH video, you said your doing the Pemi loop right ? I did that a few years ago, make sure you go out to West Bond, on the spur trail, SO worth it ! Happy trails ! Peace ✌️

    • @capsoutdoors
      @capsoutdoors  Před 6 lety

      Thanks bro! The trails were definitely in great shape. A bit overgrown in a few places but nothing crazy. The shelters here are fairly well maintained and luckily for me I didn't see a soul the entire time except for the last half-mile hiking out.
      2 and a half weeks I'll be up doing the Pemi and I'm already planning a couple of side trips, West Bond being one of them. I'm really looking forward to the Bonds, will be my first time on them.
      Safe travels!

    Great video, I was just out there for a quick overnight, I love that area. Question, maybe you know, what is the shelter etiquette in that area? Only had an issue once, I do a lot of solo backpacking and was at shelter 1 on Pharaoh lake by myself. A group of 4 came in with a bunch of beer and were very wild and kind of took over the shelter. Do you have to share a shelter at Pharaoh lake? I usually don't mind if it quiet like minded people. I know near me on the AT, the shelter is for everyone, if it hold 6 and there are 4 there you can move right in. But I thought at Pharaoh lake it was a first come first serve and you can have it to yourself. Anyway, I packed up and moved on, was only about 3pm in the summer and went to shelter #6 that was free so it worked out, but always wonder what the rules are in that area. Thanks for posting a great video.

      Sorry for the delay in responding. I usually take the Winters off to pursue other interests and i sometimes get behind here. To answer your question the lean-tos are all public and if you happen to have a group come in and want to stay there isn't much you can do but move somewhere else if you are looking for that solitude. In my experience though, any groups coming in usually will sit down to talk for a bit and will ask if it is OK to stay the evening. Myself, I usually do like the solitude, but I've also met some amazing people sharing a lean-to. Thanks for giving the video a watch, much appreciated my friend! I'll be heading back up there in April for some Spring hiking.

    Going to be doing this trip next week, did you hang your food at night? are tree options good? and did you see much bear signs., I have a bear canister but if I can just hang It to save wt. and space, be much preferred.

    • @capsoutdoors
      @capsoutdoors  Před 5 lety

      You can certainly hang your food here. That is how I did it the first time I was out here. For this trip (my second time) I did bring my bear vault. There were a few signs of bears in the area (scat) but I didn't see anything. Hopefully you see this before your trip and if so, have a great one! If you want a lean-to, try for the one that is out on the peninsula, such a great site!

    Do you think an FM radio would get signal out there? I have a pocket transistor radio that we sometimes play on low volume around the fire at night. Stand by Me style.

    • @capsoutdoors
      @capsoutdoors  Před 2 měsíci

      Hmm, that is a great question. I've never tried so not sure. I used to bring a weather radio to Spruce Lake back in the 90's and never had an issue there. This area being much closer to civilization, you may actually luck out.
