HPA calls this R the Decathlon as it was built to be able to drop onto any venue from drag racing to road course and excel.
I personally find it hard to believe only 450 HP was available to the wheels for a built VR6 but still like the chassis and handling but this engine is capable of way more than 450 to the wheels.

Buddy of mine had a 2004 R32 with all of the HPA goodies, did north of 530hp, was the scariest car I've ever been in. He sold it because it was always broken - that's the issue when you modify everything.

Matt if this is the most tuned Golf you've driven so far you seriously need to come to Germany and check out the ones we got over here. No offense to the tuners from the states and canada, but when it comes to german cars, german tuners are just lightyears ahead.

were you not listening to matt and the race driver? the car is really un-balanced man, not so much of the engine tuning but brakes and tyres need refinement, i mean imaginge if the mustang had that power, wouldve set a much faster time, because it was refined properlly
HPA is partners with HGP so they are pretty similar, but HGP has more variety due to the larger VW crowd there
I got half the stuff on my R32 and put down 402-480whp daily for the past 6 years. What a major waste of cash. My kit including the car is$40k total.
Sad. This car was my dream car back in the day. Two companies made turbo kits for the 24v VR6 and HPA got the majority of the press. Still one of the best sounding motors of all time though

If you know 4WD you have to keep your speed through a corner or it'll start to under steer worse. Also if you know the 4WD system in the golf specifically you'd know it's a 2WD/4WD thing meaning if you want more power then it sends power to the rear to keep the car steady instead of being 4WD all the time. Though it's uncertain how much HPA have tweaked that drive train.

The VR6 isn't a V6. All cylinders are on one head.
I was going to point out that it's either one or the other, but it can't be both.
iamstd2 the pistons are in a v pattern, and the 3.6 if you look at a stock one has a V6 badge on it, so sit down.
The pistons are indeed in a V pattern, but they are special in that the angle is only 15°, versus the standard 90° or 60°. It's more related to an inline engine, with all the intake and exhaust ports on their respective sides of the engine.

The road is closed when we need it to be closed. So, I don't need the road to be closed during my speaking portions since I only have cameras mounted in-car and i only need my lane. But when we do drive-by shots, chase shots, tracking shots, the road is fully closed and ours. The CHP are awesome at this.

I'm sure the front end probably pushes quite a bit due to the weight of the engine. The VR6 is fairly heavy considering its a cast iron block

Totally. It should be enjoyed it for what it is - a moderately fast, classy hatch which sounds like the bees tits and will age gracefully.
Golf,s are great cars but the trick is buy the Turbo diesel version call me insane but i saw a TDI Golf tuned to 900bhp in Poland , Diesel engines can take more power as the components in the engine are made to withstand higher tolerances under power and you would get better 0 to 60mph times as Diesels have more torque

Matt you loved HPA's 600HP MKIV R32 and their 740Hp MKVI Golf R. This particular R32 is a different animal all together!
I remember this car from Gran Turismo 4 was an absolute beast
AIM ist not building engine managments but they are building one of the best displays and loggers. The AIM MXL is the Gold installed too.

now that's a street legal race car... listen to those brakes and the gearbox noise...
you have to two foot it because of minimal weight movement. so to get more rotation in corner lift a bit on gas and feed in the brakes before apex..

I think when they took those shots after they re opened the road. They probably had it closed for a short period of time for the actual hard drive. Highway 74 has a good amount of traffic going through it all day.
During certain portions of the filming, such as my in-car, we do not need the road to be closed. During all the flyby, tracking, and chase shots, the road is closed so we can use both lanes to film, and so I can drive nice and fast during the good light.

Why talk about "closed road" when half the shot show cars on the road? I can understand some shots were filmed with spotters in front to take outside shot, but a "closed road" is not the same as an "open road with a spotter".
I don't need a closed road for the in-car monologue. I'm not driving that fast, and I'm staying to my side. We close the road for the chase cam shots, the drive-by's, the fast stuff. You pay per hour to close the road, so you only actually close it when you need it closed: for the good stuff.
I'm ready for next year right now :)
is it tuned to 500hp to maximise the longevity of the engine. HPG uses the same 3.6 VR6 from the passat R36 and get 800hp from it.
Lautaro Hunzicker wich is a lot but still far away from the big 6 cylinders in the tuner world.
Wonder how much the 3.6 weight differs from the 3.2, the push through corners is probably why VW decided for a 2.0t from mk6 onward

Serious question, at this point why start with an R32 with the increased price for the admittedly semi-rare car, seems like you could do this without starting with the R32 seeing how the engine, trans, suspension, interior are all gone, unless the AWD system (the only stock component left?) is that difficult to put into a standard golf
Ben M you would at least need a 4wd golf body. The fwd ones have kind of a solid rear axle like cars had 30 years ago because its cheap to produce. The awd ones have indipended rear suspension and obviously awd.
Hey like Matt says in the video. If you are a VW guy with a bundle of spare cash all of this means nothing. It is more expensive and really not that fast on the track but i doubt anyone who has bought one of these has even considered any of the other options.

The die hard vw guys yes would choose over a GTR. I have to say that even this line up of cars its still awesome that the R32 was in the line up. HPA still great work regardless.
HPA is a good company for headlines, but their builds are never really pushing the equipment to its limits and they always charge a premium to give you 70%. I understand why they are always chosen for these things, but as soon as you bring up value it will auto-lose. HPA will charge you more for a twin-turbo set up than it is to actually go out, buy, and build a full long block and get a single turbo for it. That thing should be making 600 wheels for what's in it.
The only sad part is that the MKVII golf R with a stage 3 will make the same WHP and cost a hell of a lot less than this HPA kit... other than that great car!

It doesn't have two cyylinder banks and even disregarding earlier, if I would say its vr6 straight six then I would also be right.
It is a V6 engine though. Even though the cylinders share the same bank, they are at a narrow angle V configuration. So V6 is more appropriate than straight six.
It's an impressive build, a fast car and I have to give them props for the extent they went to for that build, but I don't think they could've made it uglier if they tried. The paint job is bafflingly hideous, and the open grilles and angry eyes headlight/hood combo look more at home on some ruffian's mcdonald's wage funded "tuner" build than a high dollar track car.

They should move the fuel cell to the rear seat floor pan. It's up way too high and too far rearward.

Not sure why they are only giving it such low boost. A built R36 motor in combination with a built RS3 dsg gearbox or the Tiguan TDI gearbox can put down sustainable 900hp at the crank with ease.
I'm guessing this thing is street legal in Canada? I thought fuel cells were pretty much illegal for use on the road all across the states.

Yes. Where HPA's R32 Decathlon Will be fully operational at 550 hp. It was detuned to due to a faulty part.
Great build but shows that a car that is good on paper is not always the best on the road.

mcspikesky Thats what I mean. But also for example a Fiesta or MX-5 are classically fun. But how would a tuned MX-5 compareto the monsters, as it is clearly much cheaper, but maybe close to equally as fun.
we didn't factor "fun," per se, although we did do a "road manners," and "track manners," in which Leh and I pretty much ranked the cars in order of which were the most fun to drive and/or nice to spend time in.
TheSmokingTire Okay well this tuner battle was a great idea! If I could dream a little, ideally you would race them against each other on the twisties like the Best Motoring Touge Battles. But naturally there are many limitations for such a wet dream...
I like this idea. Sometimes a car is fast in a race (with the right track) but there's always that satisfaction of coming into a corner with someone on your ass then by the time the corner is done they are way behind you...or vice versa... like how not all power bands are the same... sometime you're on a road where the speed limit is right at the start of your power band OR peak torque... the car feels magical at that point. Another car that is faster might be mid power band in another gear and not magical at all in that specific moment. Ya know?

It's not a VR6 V6, it's just a VR6. It's a seperate type of engine.
So weird how a 3.6 liter heavily modified engine does 450 and a 1.9 with not many mods does almost 300.
lambusado for race days i bet its limited on hp to get in races that engine and turbo kit thats on that is good for 650 to 750 hp
