- Please make a difference to the lives of the Servicemen and women who have been wounded in the service of our country by purchasing Love Farewell:
www.riflesdirect.com/love-fare...
Love Farewell was first arranged from its traditional format by celebrated folk singer John Tams for the Napoleonic war drama Sharpe starring Sean Bean. Now it is being re-released, still featuring Tams but this time accompanied by The Band and Bugles of The Rifles regiment, to raise money for servicemen and women injured in the conflicts of today. The song is already a favourite with servicemen and women in Afghanistan and at home, and has become a poignant part of many service funerals.
Tams, who also starred in Sharpe as rifleman Daniel Hagman, said he was approached by The Rifles to produce a recording because of the reception the Band had every time they played for service personnel.
"I'm a civilian - I hold no truck with war yet the young men and women returning in heartbreaking numbers, dead and wounded in service was an opportunity to put my voice where they had put their lives a small gesture for me an all too often life-losing, life changing sacrifice for them," he said.
"Its a lovesong, a leave-taking song without jingoism or sabre rattling and if it makes a difference to the care of those coming home and their families, my small contribution has been worthwhile.
The Rifles Director of Music, Captain Mark Purvey, said he rearranged Love Farewell after the Regiment's Colonel Commandant, General Sir Nick Parker, challenged him to produce a piece of music that would be relevant to, and inspire todays soldiers.
"The song was actually from Queen Anne's reign but it really strikes a chord with the lads today too," he said.
"When we played it for some of the troops who were deploying and some who had recently returned, the reception we got was pretty spectacular - they really loved it. It's by soldiers and for soldiers. It's about the horrors of war but it's also about leaving the people you love behind, and looks at both sides. I think most people can relate to that."

two planes landed in england yesterday, 1 carrying 23 overpaid under achieving players with egos to match there wallets, and the other 7 men whos coffins draped in the union jack who died for this country, these are the real heros we should be supporting these men and women who give there lives so we can live in a free world, these are the pride of england r..i.p.... thumbs up if u agree
You wrote your message 14 years ago. Goodness time flies by. Your message touches me deeply into my inner core. Today, England are playing the Swiss at the Euros 2024 in Germany. The older I get the more I sense how unimportant many trhings are. Thank you so much.
When you go home, tell them of us and say, for your tomorrow, we gave our today. Lest we forget.
I've booked a ticket to see John in October. Woefully neglected by the mainstream. He represents the core of this nation
I wanted to reply with the Union Jack but unfortunetly they don't seem to have the emoji anymore. 😠
🇬🇧🇬🇧
I think this song is brilliant. Its amazing how a song from the Peninsular wars, sung by our troops when they were fighting Napoleon, and then shown on Sharpe, is re-invigorated today!!!
March on boys, you're doing Britain proud!!!
I Salute you John Tams a great tribute to all those people who have kept us safe through all the conflicts against this country unfortunately sent into battle by less noble leaders and politicians and into conflicts they themselves would never partake in.
The immortal words of a great poem comes to mind……..
“OURS NOT TO REASON WHY, OURS BUT TO DO AND DIE.
GOD REST ALL OUR GREAT WARRIORS AND GOD BLESS YOU ALL.
for my grandfather and father and all those have served.
I forgot to to mention the Supreme Sacrifice, that sometimes paid by finest Army in the world.
I have had a 23 year career with the Reserve Army. ( 3.5 years with 4Para (V) the hairs on the back of my neck, go every time I hear this beautiful song. We WILL remember them.
FIRST IN THE FIELD, LAST OUT. SWIFT AND BOLD. THANK YOU FOR YOUR SERVICE.
@BritishPatriot3 We've got lads like that here in Canada, too. The TransCanada Highway between Trenton and Toronto has been renamed the "Highway of Heroes" in their honour...every time a hearse makes that trip with a flag-draped coffin inside, the bridges over the highway are crowded with people, many of whom didn't know the soldier inside, and are still crying. A very, very big thumbs up, indeed.
I had the honor to serve beside some fantastic 'brothers' from Canada. May those who gave all be remembered and those that gave some be well looked after. CFGB
Your brave lads have fought and died for us. Respect to your country men
John Tamms one of my most favourite singers totally love all his ballards and songs
His voice, just brings you in, class mate.
Royal Engineer through and through, god bless family and friends who never came back :(
I was in the Engineers. But I spent a lot of time with 4 RGJ on and off. Great bunch of blokes. Beautiful song. Here's to the Rifles!
Right back at you! Without the Engies there to get us to the front there wouldn’t be battle, just slaughter. Together we’re unstoppable 👊
LYRICS
I thought I heard the Colonel crying
March brave boys there's no denying
Cannons roaring - drums abeating
March brave boys there's no retreating
Love Farewell
If I should fall in far off battle
Cannons roar and rifles rattle
Thoughts fly homeward - words unspoken
Valiant hearts are oftimes broken
Love Farewell
Will you go or will you tarry
Will you wait or will you marry
Would this moment last for ever
Kiss me now and leave me never
Love Farewell
I thought I heard the Colonel crying
March brave boys there's no denying
Cannons roaring - drums abeating
March brave boys there's no retreating
Love Farewell
END
Good morning, gentlemen.
Thank you, Sir.
I have loved this song from the first moment I heard it and was one of the first to buy the Sharpe CD when released. Beautifully done again with the Rifles. I have very fond memories of past friends in 2RGJ where I served 79 - 86. God bless the Rifles, former 'Jackets' and all our previous regiments, who gave us so much history to be proud of. 'H' Hanley

Home at Last
He’s home at last, a mother’s son, a fine young man, his duty done;
Yet not for him the fond embrace, a loving kiss, a smiling face
Or cries of joy to laugh and cheer the safe return of one so dear;
It is his lot to show the world a soldier’s fate as flags unfurl
And Standards lower in salutation, symbols of a grateful nation.
Sombre now, the drum beats low as he is carried, gentle, so
As if not to disturb his rest, by comrades, three and three abreast.
Who now, as quiet orders sound, they, one by one then move around
To place him in the carriage decked with flowers in calm and hushed respect,
Preparing for the sad, slow ride through silent crowds who wait outside.
So the warrior now returns to native soil and rightly earns
The great respect to one so young, though sadness stills the waiting throng,
While flowers strew the path he takes, as the carriage slowly makes
A final turning to allow the veterans standing there to show
The soldiers pride, a silent, mute, proud and respectful last salute.
Yet, while onlookers stand and see the simple, moving ceremony,
There is a house, a place somewhere, where sits a waiting, vacant chair,
And one great yawning empty space in someone’s heart, no last embrace
To bid a final, fond farewell to one who will forever dwell
In love and cherished memory, a Husband, Son, eternally.
And we who see should not forget that in this soldier’s final debt
And sacrifice for duty’s sake, it is the loved ones who must take
The hurt, to bear as best they can, and face a future lesser than
The one they dreamed in bygone years, now to regard with bitter tears,
Reflecting, as time intervenes, on thoughts of how it might have been.
But in their grief there’s quiet pride that loved ones bravely fought and died
Believing in a worthy goal which helps give solace, and consoles
By knowing that the loss they bear is shared by all our peoples, where
In gratitude, their names will be forever honoured, guaranteed
To be remembered and enshrined, beyond the shifting sands of time.

@@blob22201 Be kind to our old foes-come-friends, sunshine. He gave, and as such so should you. It's the old way.
this is British history , watch it, "Over the Hills and Far Away" - Arranged by John Tams [with English Subtitles]
My grandfather was in 1st Battalion, The Rifle Brigade, serving in Boer and 1st World War being awarded a D.C.M. so I have a great affection for The Rifles, although I didn't serve with them when I was in "the mob"
So love this song so raw so moving so deep, so touches the soul 😍😍😍
Simply fantastic. Brilliant. Well done John Tams.
Come home safe lads!!
This song is 200 years old, and is about the horror and separation of war, and soldiers marching unwillingly into battle. It still is.
I want ALL the brave boys to come home safely, whatever their nationalities, never to have to pick up guns again, never again to suffer and die. For whatever cause, for whatever flag.
Moving tribute to our fallen and wounded soldiers and those out there still in Afghanistan.
Makes me so proud
Hats off to the Light drill mob and all their children, for all their greatness. Fond regards from your lesser cousins, the Royal Corps of Scaleys.
All I can say is:- I've got tears!
For me this song apitomises the life of my friend Lt Col Bob Pickford MBE RIP gone but not forgotten buddy Cede nullis
Graham Pickin I served under him. He was QM tech 2LI, I was his signaller. Never ever heard a bad word about him. He was a true gentleman, or in his own words “I did well for a shit thick lad from durham”... RIP
Bob and Angie lived here in Pyla Cyprus,it was in the March at a boxing do at Alexander Barracks,we were drinking and he said he had a lump in his throat,6 months later,he was gone,RIP Bob,a proper gent.

Excellent video, great choice of music. John Tams has such an incredible voice. I've loved this song since I first heard it in Sharpe's
My sympathy to you and your family Nick, my sympathy with all the lads and lasses who gave their lives or been affected by conflict. My life was shortened, I feel, by my son's service; my ears were glued to the wireless, bad times. Truly bad. He gets married next year.
God save the queen from your Canadian brothers and sisters out there come home safe bhys
A very poignant reminder of what our Service Personnel and their families have to endure and sacrifice on an almost daily basis.
May you always find the strength, courage, compassion and comradeship to continue with these tasks you have to endure.
Stay safe, stay strong, work well together, with support from your units, your families, your Oppo’s and your Civvy friends.
I look forward to sharing a beer or three anytime & anywhere upon your safe return.
John Tams- you're magnificent!!
Just Brilliant. That's what you call Real Singing Hagman. Now Clean your Rifle. Love ❤️ Farewell.
Love this song..and love the images ...i dont believe in these wars made for an elite..but being from an italian military family background (my uncle died in the take of Gorizia 6 august 1916, and was awarded the Silver Medal..his body never recovered)i respect the soldiers who lost their life and those who returned .The decisions are always taken by the politicians , the soldier only goes where is ordered and nobly does his part.Respect.
To Mark who asked around a year ago: Tams first recorded this for the TV Series Sharpe and it appears on the CD from that series, "Sharpe: Over The Hills & Far Away"
my pals away this month....attached to 39th air assault....Stevie Robinson.....BIG STEVE..........god bless ya big lad come back safe an'well.......love ya to bits mate......love Rob and Ruth.......
Such a special rendition - what a message and so very movingly performed ....!!!
AWESOME
Good on you mate! I was in the Falklands in 1981. I saw some of my mates killed in front of me. Some of my mates were white, some were black and Asian. We were soldiers and we were mates. We didn't care about race, religion or anything else because the man or woman standing next to you could be the one to save your life. I was and still am proud to be British and so was every solider, sailor and airman who stood along side of me. We are British and bloody proud!
I am from the rifles regiment as a cadet and I have been asked to learn this to sing at performances x
Can't believe this song dates back to the peninsular wars.
i love this song and it reminds me of my lad when he was in afghanistan last year and hes due to go back next year
I am crying. Wonderfull, thank you!
god bless them forever
One day we will stand again as brothers as we have in the past
Aww so glad they get the honor they deserve. I'm so glad they are being recognized for what they have been doing.
heres to the 95th rifles go royal green jackets/ durham light infantry
chill out feller this is a great song and a great singer!!
can i thank you and your family for your brothers bravery on behalf of this country. unfortunatly people seem to have no respect for our great fallen anymore. im very sorry for your loss
fantastic tribute to all my lost and injured brothers
swift and bold guys
How is it that a truly great piece of music by great artists (both Tams and the members of the Band and Bugles) for a worthy cause (Help for Heroes) gets less than 300k views in nearly 12 years of being on youtube, but a piece of "music" by talentless hip hop/ R&B / pop / rap artists created on a computer can get millions of views in just a few days. At times this world is truly depressing.
This made me cry
Big respects and thank you. .your the best
What a song brillin
Awesome voice.
Thank you, that is a great tribute video.
Beautiful song
Lovely
ditto @ those supporting remarks before me.
Unbelievable heroes, I couldn't stand even in their shadows.
Flag or Jack, here is not the place to discuss such matters. Remember those who have fallen.
Swift and bold always and forever
swift and bold lads :)
god bless our troops, heroes and killers of our enemies. Come home safe guys & girls . Uve done a good enough job !
Light Division,. Never forget us!
They shall not grow old as we are left grow old.
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning,
We will remember them.
We must remember all those that die in fighting the allies and the enemies the good and the bad th eguilty and the innocent. And as many soldiers march to war never to return again but come back covered in flags and glory we will remember them.
yep you're right. 30 years is a long time and the 1 and the 2 are very close on the keyboard!

So our lads have now left Afghanistan and soon it will return to what its been doing for hundreds of years....tribal fighting! Every man, woman and child of that god forsaken land was not worth the life of ONE british soldier!! what a terrible waste of our wonderful soldiers...thank god we are out of there!!!
