Another good mark for Pellaeon: he loved clones. _Loved_ them. During the Clone War, Pellaeon commanded the RAS _Leveler,_ and can be quoted on a number of occasions complaining about the uselessness of nonclone crewmen, even wishing for the old days where a commander "could throw a useless minion out the airlock." When a number of clone crewmen were killed at the Battle of JanFathal, he elected to find fellow troopers they had been close with to extend his condolences in the same vein of sending a next-of-kin letter. Top man, Pellaeon.
All in all, seems like quite the sailors admiral
"We're just clones sir. We're meant to be expendable."
"Not to me."
Pellaeon was amazing, the greatest imperial of all time in my opinion
Honestly, the sequels should have done something with the legends warlord empire's. The first order just feels like empire 2.0 but without the cool admiral's and legend content.
I agree. I love the books and the sequels suck.
With the books the world building and futher expansion of the universe is just has so much potential like aftet they explain the fall of the empire u can go explore the unknown regions that would be cool
The Resistance and First Order are just lamer versions of their predecessors. Nothing creative about them whatsoever.
@@PFM719 thats true tho i have to say the first order stormtroopers do look cool but thats about
There's still a bit of room for that. Like maybe the NR doing secret black ops to destabilize the remnants. Put in Zsinj and the Pentastar Alignment as remnants after or before Jakku and I'll be cool with it.
Gilad Pellean was a good leader of the Imperial Remnent
Is there any facts why he was a good leader?
@@feralprocessor9853 He'd rather "surrender" the Empire and Create the Imperial Remnant than continue fighting when he knew he couldn't win against the New Republic
Yeah thats good one if I was in his position.
One of my favorite characters.
The Imperial Remnant somehow still feels more impressive than the New Order. Plus it actually addressed the positive aspects of the Empire, and showed how such a government could function with a strong, intelligent and fair leader while also highlighting the flaws in a system that puts so much power in it's central leader.
Disney? Promoting authoritanism and making the Empire sympathetic? Not in a thousand years. They must be evil and petty, with childish hobbies such as kicking puppies and stealing candies from children.
@@Charlie0l9 I mean, there's gotta be a middle ground between "I'm so evil I'm going to eat this kitten, for no reason!" and the "see? these are *nice* fascists!" attitude some Legends stuff had.
Under Disney? such things would never happen. It's always "Good guys who loves flowers and protecting people vs Bad guys who likes to rule and destroy people"
@@BLOrtega You realize characters like Loki, Thanos, and Killmonger have existed under Disney, right?
@@starwarsnerd100 Indeed I do, but for Star Wars. It's up for debate
The Galactic Empire with the Imperial Knights was awesome
To be honest, even directly after Endor, there were certainly some âgoodâ splinter groups, who would focus on humane treatment and establishing an area of space which order and stability in an era when most of the galaxy was in a constant state of war.
But the real nasty aspects would slowly be annihilated with palleon, and they would never really come back in any major form within the remnant. Also, one could still make the argument that for a very long time, an imperial remnant was more appealing than the new republic, if only because of that stability that was brought within their borders.
I agree for the most part, but I don't think that evil "would never really come back in any major form within the remnant". The Fell Empire is in my opinion more on the evil side, with the undoing of democratic reforms and the collaboration with the Sith.
@@Wastydest The collaborating with the sith was much later and due to pressure from some leaders and not the entire system. Also letâs be honest, democracy doesnât seem to work well in the Star Wars universe.
@@connorgolden4 True, but If you talk about "never" it's the same if it happened "much later". And if evil comes from the top of the hirarchy I'd say that is a major way to come back.
I also think why it came to the collaboration doesn't effect how bad it was.
@@Wastydest One of the really interesting aspects of those comics was the Imperial Knights and the fact that they'd been specifically created as a way to stop the rise of another Palpatine...and just how difficult it ended up being for them to fulfill that particular duty and not for the normal "Evil Empire" reasons. When Emperor Fel, for lack of a better term, fell they took a long time to realize it because they were loyal to the empire, loyal to throne...and actually KNEW Fel as a person and didn't want to believe the worst of him.
@@canisblack I completely agree.
So by later realising, that Fell had succumbed to the dark side it is confirmed, that evil did find it's way back to the Empire.

Power corrupts, absolutt power corrupts absolutely.
@@wolfu597 Does it really corrupt if Palpatine went into it corrupted?
@@coygus4422 Well, he pulled the strings from the shadows. He sowed the seed for the Clone war, and gradually shifted the blame for the wars duration on the Jedi's failure and that they were evil and that he was the only one who could correct it all.
He was a master manipulator, so I think corruption is the wrong term for someone like Palpatine. After all, all he cared about was power.
The Empire, like most fascist states, intensely favored and supported and was supported by corporations and the wealthy business elite
Thrawn and The Vong deserve to have films of their own.
Disney replaced the Vong with the Grysk.
@@Lightscribe225 another example of why they suck.
The sequel trilogy could have started with Thrawn leading the Imperial remnant against the New Republic, while the Vong would be this mysterious looming threat. Close to the end of the second movie they would begin their invasion of the galaxy. And then the third movie would have Thrawn and the Empire team up with the New Republic to fight the Vong.
@@darthknightwingphoenix2081 Judging by what Filoni is doing, he might be trying to make the Grysk the Vong 2.0

âI encounter civilians like you all the time. You believe the Empire is continually plotting to do harm. Let me tell you, your view of the Empire is far too dramatic. The Empire is a government. It keeps billions of beings fed and clothed. Day after day, year after year, on thousands of worlds, people live their lives under Imperial rule without seeing a stormtrooper or hearing a TIE fighter scream overhead."
-Grand Admiral Thrawn
Actually, following a realistic point of view, I have always thought that for most people life was pretty much normal and even perhaps better than in the latter decades of the Republic. The Sith induced troubles/neglect and so on would be gone in the New Order.
War, rebellion, massacres and so on were far away things for most systems (we are talking about a galaxy-wide government, thousands & thousands of worlds), most people do not care about politics in daily life ( dealt with locally anyway, and there was the token Senate) and corruption and other problems are not imperial per se.
So in terms of daily life, I guess unless you are unlucky enough to be on the receiving side of Imperial might & wrath, it should be pretty ok. If I was to write some things in the EU/Legends continuity and set in the Imperial Era, I would make the Empire pretty popular among most people. I like when things are more grey in Star Wars.
Of course, this is only taking into account the facade of the government, the theoritical "new order" under a constitutionnal Emperor.
The real sith-led magocracy is indeed evil. But save for a few, everybody ignored this.
For the Emperor led monarchy, I think pretty much everyone in the Empire except the Emperor himself knew that the military, the governors and ,even after the senate was disbanded, the senators held all of the power. I think it could be compared to the German Empire in 1916-1918 where the military was holding all of the power and everyone just pretended to listen to the Kaiser.
Pellaeon is one of my favourite Star Wars characters.

Paelleon is easily a top 3 Star Wars character for me. His development over the entire legends series as a whole is probably my favorite of any character.
one word changes everything, legends or canon
"Daala wasn't very cash money" may be the best thing I've ever heard you say.
Daala kickstarted the whole thing. Before she killed all the warlords, they were wasting entire fleets and super star destroyers on each other. After she killed them, they united and started to make something of themselves.
@@iamblight707 I appreciate Daala for the fact she kickstarted Pellaeon and the end of the war, at least.
Not gonna lie, the book art for Daala on the KJA book series was the best part of the books.
I was really amazed at how the Empire evolved from the story writings of the late 90s and early 2000s. It is more colorful and refreshing to stop always see the Empire being the enemy. For example, in a later star wars legacy comic, ironically a company of aquatic stormtroopers help rescue Mon Cals from space pirates
So basically Pellaeon was sort of like the Otto von Bismarck of the Imperial Remnant?
"Daala herself was not very cash money." Now that's freaking great stuff there!!! Admiral Thrawn > Admiral Pellaeon > Admiral Daala > the rest
Same
The sequels should have been based on the very first Thrawn-trilogy by Timothy Zahn.
If you haven't read that trilogy, I highly recommend you do. The stories use characters from the original trilogy, 5 years after Endor, and the story is the entry point for my favorite imperial character, Grand Admiral Thrawn.
That was a good trilogy. In fact, I thought at first that Heir to the Empire was titled Return of the Empire, which was the name of a Star Wars fan fiction I was working on.
The Empire from Legends were amazing, TFO has absolutely nothing on them.
It just reminds me thrawn is dead an i just sit there sad.
TFO vs Pellaeon or Fel Empire could be a fun crossover though.
This is indeed why the First Order was a absolute catastrophe right from the start for me. They simply took all the worst aspects of the Empire and ramped them up another few notches instead of giving us a Empire that actually tried to embody the ideals that the New Order espoused, those of order, peace, and security
The First Order always just felt like a powerful and fanatical splinter faction that intended to try and further Palpatines old ways and plans. Especially as shown in episode seven they just felt like that with the exception that they had a super weapon of their own. Though I also despise the fact of the New Republic's HEAVY disarmament programs after Jakku. I mean... A bomber without the ability to launch bombs or torpedo's? You've now just made a slow and ineffective fighter that doesn't even have strike craft level heavy laser canons to justify the use of the old, slow Y-wing platform.
@@Meravokas That's exactly what they are. Basically SO fanatical that they ignored Palpatine's self-destruct order (Operation: Cinder) and headed out to the outer rim to upgrade themselves into Empire 2.0. Then things fall apart because JJ and Rian don't know how to keep each other in the loop and apparently nobody was in charge and it all turned into Dark Empire 2.0.
Palpatine may have been evil, but the empire as a whole was as complex as the people that it consisted of.
To me, when I think of a "Good Imp" I think of someone who can sympathies with rebels who's causes were arguably just yet still had a strong belief to the idea that a strong central military government is necessary for security and protection.
What made a terrist organizations actions just?
@@dach829I think Nathan Z means sympathize with the causes of the Rebellion, not their actions.
A Good Imp would usually try to reform the Empireâs institutions from within (usually politically through the Senate). When this inevitably fails due to Sheev, they tend to join the Rebels.
@mc yes Palleon
I think it's worth to think about wether the "evil" is institutional or that the deeds are committed by individuals (which would reflect badly for the Empire as well)
Where the evil deeds ordered by palpatine himself or did a Moff or oother Imperial officer committed atrocities in the name of the Empire? This is something to think about and would answer the question in the video
the Fel Empire was really freaking cool, its interesting to see a morally gray empire
Fel Empire even established Imperial Mission to help poor, and before all that, Jagged Fel will make it possible for aliens to join stormtrooper cops
Plus they established the Imperial Knights who in addition to enforcing law and order had the additional mission of eliminating Sith, observing the Emperor for any Sith influence, and eliminating him if necessary.
@@WarlordShogun A duty they absolutely were willing and able to perform.
Post-Palpatine Empire: Oh no, we lost our leader! What do we do?!
Gilead Pellaeon: Now this looks like a job for me, so everybody, just follow me-
This would have been a far more interesting angle for the sequels to take. An uneasy but otherwise amiable balance of power between NR and Imperial Remnant, as they face challenges that stress their truce but ultimately force them to work together (a la YV, or a splinter group of extremists).
"I have brought peace to my new empire" or something like that

âI donât like sandâ

Oh dude! I remember the red armored empire Knights! I read every single legacy comic book before Lucas arts shut down. I wish the sequel trilogy had stuff like this. It was sooooo cool.
It's a shame that the Empire in disney canon disintegrated so quickly to the point it's hard to suspend your disbelief.
I like this kind of storytelling because it feels natural. It makes sense that not all imperial groups were just evil and that when crushing the head of the empire, they didn't all just fall apart. The Empire had control over an ENTIRE galaxy, so remnants that would self govern makes sense especially since they were still significant galactic powers.
âGood is a point of viewâ - Palpatine
âThere is no mercyâ - also Palpatine
"I am the senate"
From my point of view the Jedi are evil!
@@chaospilot2142 Yes, children abductors, forced celibate and clone army of slave soldiers. What if parents refused to give their "gifted kid" to Jedi? What if clones were unfit/unwilling to fight? Their conditioning wasn't 100% reliable and they are living creatures with a soul.
Nicolas Lecellier the story of the fall of the Jedi is about how corrupted good cannot fight evil successfully. Itâs pretty poignant at the moment
The entire story of Star Wars feels like a game of Stellaris
I love Thrawn and Pellaeon and wish the former existed in features besides just the Rebels saga, and that the latter existed at all in the new stuff. I think I like Pellaeon more though. While he may lack Thrawn's brilliance or totally cool and largely flawless rationality he was also, in every sense of the word more human. Hah, even if that's a poor choice of words with regard to Star Wars, I do think Pellaeon is at least more sentient (that is with the complexity of being grounded and human) in terms of moral complexity. Thrawn comes across as a bit more of a Vulcan-like being by comparison, and I just find that less relatable. Perhaps that's just part and parcel of the Chiss species though.
Yeah the chiss are really analytical and emotionless, they are generally smarter than humans though, I would say
Once again a very interesting video, you're doing great at making a lot if this stuff way more interesting, good job EckhartsLadder.
This sort of story is why I prefer Legends. The Empire ended up as a slightly more controlled and just as fair New Republic (or Galactic Alliance, if you prefer).
This man really said not âvery cash - moneyâ
"The dark side is suffering!"-Kyube Yoda.
I remember Daala from Legacy of the Force. The cannons her ships used were so cool.
One of my favorite aspects of "Resistance" (animated series, etc.) was the inclusion of Cpt. Doza and Griff Hollaron, both former Imperial Navy, and both aligning themselves with the "light" light side. Doza's and Hollaron's insights, eventually having been on both sides of the fight, are brilliant. As well, it was thoughtful for the series to explore the appeal of the Empire through the actions of Tam Ryvora. The reality, fictionally and historically, Imperialism can have and has had mass appeal... the primary danger is trusting/believing/knowing what's at the top.
The largest issue with the Empire actually lies with the state of a post-war galaxy that was mostly just against non-humans. Seeing as the Empire didn't exactly condemn the racism and xenophobia that existed within the territories after the Clone Wars. It was stated in one of the recent Thrawn books that the Empire itself is not racist. However, due to the years of war against the CIS, which were mostly led by non-humans, they grew to despise anyone who wasn't human or near-human. That is where the racism comes from, years of conflict. The Empire could've worked, but unfortunately the people really killed it.
Would be good to have an updated video on the Empire of the Hand at some point to take into account theories from the Mandalorian (is that where Thrawn is? busy setting up a canon version with Ezra?) possibly with Baron Soontir Fel too? đ€

I wish something like the Fel Empire existed in Canon.
According to some sources there actually is a small sort of Imperial Remnant in Canon that still operates under the name of the Galactic Empire even by the time of the Sequel Trilogy. It would have been interesting to see them referenced in the movies.
Hey so I watch your videos all the time, and I am really going to hate the day when they stop coming in.

I have always absolutely loved palleon for these reasons
*"not very cash money"* couldn't have said it better myself.
I watch skippable ads to the end for you Eck, not sure if it helps at all but until I hear otherwise Iâm gonna keep going
I always thought there was a huge missed opportunity for the post-RotJ Disney products with the fragmentation of the Imperial Remnant. It'd have been great to see a fleet somewhere that settled in to a more thought-out and effective role. My take: the fleet makes a deal with a couple of planets in a region, exchanging space-lane security for taxes. By helping those planets out-compete their neighbors (no pirates would be willing to prey on their flagged merchants), they demonstrate the usefulness of the Imperial Navy, getting more planets to sign on. Each world would be left to its own affair, simply providing funds and materiel to support the fleet in its role of space-lane security. Throw in protection from military threats (and refusal to commit to offensive wars, though strategic offensives in a defensive war would be fine) and it has the potential to be a great deal for member worlds without any of the tyranny, despotism, or aggression of the old Galactic Republic or Galactic Empire.
Kinda want Palleon in current canon.. Dunno, maybe have him gathering remnants of First Order or have a spiritual successor, since it is shame these bits of lore were lost with legends. Personally, I've always digged a concept of Imperials becoming sort of good guys as nametag of bad guys was given to new threats.
Let's just admit
Galactic empire > First order
Fun fact, in Star Wars: Rebels, the Rebellion commits more war crimes than the Empire.
"Evil is a label we place on those who threaten us." ~ Chancellor Palpatine
As Thrawn stated, most citizens never saw a single TIE fighter. Most citizens supported or were indifferent to the Empire, and there is significant argument that the Rebel Alliance caused far more suffering than the Empire ever would have through the chaos and war caused. Now in real life I'm an individualist to the extreme, but taking the argument for what it is the Empire definitely has reason behind its support and the Alliance to Restore the Republic has serious problems within its own actions.
Something I never thought of why was the emperor throne room next to the reactor shaft
So, the Emperor can throw someone down there when he gets mad. But, ironically, he got shafted.
This is why I love Legends more. However it'd be interesting to see the Imperial Remnant + New Republic vs The First Order.

Even during the main era of the Empire, there were a lot of heroic Imperials, it's just that you rarely saw them due to the focus on the conflict between the Empire and the Rebellion/New Republic. Just as there were nightmarish forces in the rebellion who were basically terrorists or pirates claiming it for legitimacy while continuing their normal businesses.

You know that meme of the cat just bobbing his head to some vibe? That's me at around 0:01
i would appreciate some content on star wars pirates such as the ones from "I Jedi" or any others
The empire was always the good guys.
I'm sure there were definitely instances in which people in the Empire was good, but the organization itself wasn't overall obviously. Honestly from the numbers that are available, the amount of systems, ships, planets, troops, officers etc. Under the Empire's control was massive. All we see in the films is the direct leadership of the empire acting in an clearly evil way. I'd be really interested to see/read stories about sectors that didn't really have major conflicts. Even during the Clone Wars which was a much bigger conflict, the majority of the galaxy was untouched by war or at least never saw a clone/battle droid. I'm sure a lot of systems saw the Empire as a genuinely good thing providing security from pirates, terrorists, criminals etc. Not to mention preventing all the infighting between systems as well. There were probably a lot of Imperial officers who weren't evil either, hell the Empire essentially took everyone (even luke wanted to join!) So there had to be some large sectors where the Empire had a largely good presence. Hell, even in militaries on earth there are different views on what's ethical or moral in war so extrapolate that to billions of planets, officers, and soldiers. I'm sure not every, or even most of the Imperial officer corps acted like the upper echelon. Especially the average Stormtrooper and a ton of different reasons to join except to be evil.
In Squadrons for ex. all the Imperial Pilots are cold and somewhat distant and I know they're trying to strike a contrast between them and the rebel squadron but it still felt a bit cliche and overdone. It would be interesting to see an Imperial squad or crew with the personalities of more "good" characters. I wish Star Wars would play around with it more but I guess the narrative doesn't really fit the morally grey view point. That's okay too, there's always a need for the traditional good vs evil story.
Sounds like the Empire slowly transitioned from a ridiculous force of evil to gradually behaving more like a regular empire.
both the Empire and the Republic are suggestive with their morality. that's why i love star wars.
i want to see more about the new republic and the empire fighting side by side
This was pretty nice. Though it one of your early comments got me thinking a bit...have you ever done a video on why the various Dark/Sith Lords actually went for superweapons time and time again even though there was plenty of historical evidence to show they didn't work or even more contemporary studies showing that using those resources to construct even larger fleets that could directly oppress even more of the galaxy?
I mean I'm pretty sure that Legends never outright stated it, but if you read between the lines it seems pretty obvious.
