The thing is, the only reason the Coliseum (Flavian Amphitheater) is in the shape it is now is because Italian rulers around it took great quantities of the coliseums’ concrete for building material, as well as fires and earthquakes. If it wasn’t for that, it would be in almost perfect condition today.

The Colosseum was fine as long as games were held there, which, per request of the Pope at the time, were ended under the rule of the Ostrogothic King of Italy, Flavius Theodoric. Upon falling into disuse, it was turned into a storage yard for the Commune di Roma, which by then had depopulated from a high of over a half million in the Pax Romana to about 30,000. Later on, stones were taken from it for use in other building projects in and around Roma, the Colosseum didn't fall apart, it was partly disassembled and/or demolished. There was a disastrous fire in AD 217 which took out the upper roof and canopy structure, it was not completely rebuilt until AD 240. The building did suffer from earthquakes, Theodosius II had it renovated after a bad quake in 443. Since the Church didn't want it to be restored to its original purpose, another earthquake in 1349 which caused the partial collapse which was never restored.

I have been in Herculaneum, which like Pompei was covered under lava. It is better preserved. It was a small roman city, mabe 5000 inhabitants. The quality of the construction work was stunning. I whould go so far to say, that the houses where better built than many buildings today. That was the first time I really understood, that great civilisation perished, and why the time after that is called the dark ages. Humanity reached hights in the past, only to fall back to lower levels of developement through war and diseases.

minor points to an excellent vid:
The Romans DID make wood stadiums... its just that the concrete ones are the ones that lasted. In fact the worst stadium catastrophes ever were not the various horrific disasters like at Hillsborough or Bradford City. Not by a long shot. There was a wooden stadium made for gladiator games just outside of rome (Fidenae) that collapsed just about exactly 2000 years ago which apparently killed a minimum of 20,000 people.
Also, the fact that the Colisuem is crumbling and doesn't look much like it did almost 2000 years ago is certainly at least partially due the fact that the marble overlays were long ago stripped from the facility. The fact that so many roman arenas and coliseums are still around and basically structurally sound is a testament to the lasting power of concrete.

Definitely one of the cool designs of Century Link Field, home of the Seattle Seahawks. A narrow lot necessitated a smaller stadium footprint, so they made two huge bridge-like arches running parallel to the sidelines way up high that essentially suspend the nosebleeds up on top of the terrace and half the lower bowl. Really puts them close to the field and makes opposing players feel like the hostile fans are stacked up right over them. Curved metal roof up in there really reflects that crowd noise straight onto the field.

Good video, but a few flaws in the explanations. I'll give my few cents:
    1. As others have noted, the Colosseum was a monument of engineering, and has stood to this day mostly intact. It appears "crumbling" not just because of the ravages of time and natural disasters, but also because subsequent builders pilfered its concrete to use on other projects. To give a good gauge of the immense durability of Roman concrete, one only needs to look at the Pantheon, which was built only 50 years after the Colosseum and remains intact (possibly due to the fact that it was a more hallowed and revered structure, and was used as a Catholic church after the fall of the Roman Empire).
    2. Cantilevers are possible only if the cantilevered section could provide both compressive and tensile forces. The weight of the structure naturally pulls the structure down, so tensile forces will be trying to pull apart the top of the cantilever. In order for the cantilever to remain in one piece, the top portion needs to be strong in tension to resist the tensile forces. At the same time, the bottom of the cantilever resists compressive forces to counteract the tensile forces at the top.
    3. Concrete is very strong in compression, but weak in tension. To construct a cantilever from one material type only, you need to use a material strong in both compression and tension, like steel or wood.
    4. However, you can make composite materials that can use the strengths of various materials and structural orientations to make a structural material that is strong in both tensile and compressive strength, as well as in various load directions. Reinforced concrete is an example, using concrete for compressive strength and steel reinforcement for tensile strength. Plywood is another example, using thin plies of wood glued in alternating 90 degree layers to be strong throughout in all directions.
    5. Because the Colosseum and other Roman concrete structures rely on compressive strength only, they have often lasted for almost 2000 years or more. This is especially true for structures made in a dome or circular shape, as these will resist earthquake forces more than other structures that could only resist forces in one direction.
    6. Based on our material technology today, reinforced and pre-stressed concretes are unlikely to last as long as the great Roman concrete structures. That is, if they are placed under any significant tensile load. For reinforced concrete, this is due to the presence of steel, which rusts. In any climate except the warmer drier climates, water will eventually get into cracks forming in the concrete and attack the steel. The steel will eventually rust, and the reinforced concrete structure will eventually fail with any tension.
    7. The reason that bare steel beams is not used as much in stadiums nowadays to support structures is due to its propensity to rust and crumble. Steel requires periodic maintenance, which includes painting and re-painting all areas where any bare steel is exposed. Reinforced concrete reduces this maintenance by covering the steel reinforcement under concrete, but is not foolproof or permanent (see point 6 above).
    8. In addition to paint, fireproofing needs to be applied to steel because it loses significant structural strength and stability above a certain temperature (see WTC during 9/11). That's another item to maintain and inspect. Reinforced concrete, on the other hand, requires no such maintenance other than to ensure there is enough concrete still covering the steel reinforcement.
    9. One final note. Wood is making a comeback in large structures nowadays as "mass timber". A popular type of "mass timber" is the CLT, which basically consists of 2x4 sections glued together in different orientations to form a large square block section. Unlike thinner lumber sections like 2x4s, the outer layers of "mass timber" will char and form a fireproof section that will protect the rest of the inner wood from burning while the whole "mass timber" section maintains its structural strength during a fire.

What a long reply. Can't believe I read it all, but then again, I can, because it was full of interesting information. Thank you. I've wondered for many years if a method could be used in stadiums to eliminate the need for poles without huge expense.

Thanks for the reply, and you're welcome! I can't believe I wrote all of that, but my writing here was surprisingly good even on a second read. My writing often tends to be long-winded and not concise enough, but this essay was actually fine. 😅
I wrote this two years ago, and since then, we now have a good example of the limits of reinforced concrete in wet environments from the Miami condo collapse from a year ago. To reiterate, reinforced concrete is always vulnerable to any water intrusion attacking the steel reinforcement within. That's why reinforced concrete structures will never last as long as the non-reinforced Roman concrete structures.

@@urbananalrapist You did a great job explaining the strength of Roman vs. reinforced. I appreciated it, since I am not well educated about this subject. By the way, I was only being snarky about the length of your reply. It was long only by CZcams standards, but certainly well worth reading. English is a horribly cumbersome language at best.

No problem, I appreciate your support! I try to educate on subjects I know about, and try to learn about subjects I'm not well-versed at.
I'm aware of how wordy my writing can be. I often get a reply or thumbs-up for something I wrote years ago, and revisit what I wrote. Sometimes I go "dang, I am just droning on and on here". My default is towards wordiness, so I almost always re-read what I just wrote, restructure sentences, and cut out fat.
But this essay was pretty inspired and fairly clean writing, Also, I used numbering as a way to help break up the essay, haha.
And I totally agree about the English language. It's not a particularly elegant language. I marvel at truly good writers who can make their points emphatically yet tersely.

To designa stadium has always been one of my dream projects as a civil engineer. It takes a lot of headhaches just to design a building... imagine a stadium which is not just the roof. Big foundation is also needed and if its bad soil a special structure is needed which most of the time costs more to build than the main structure so it's a very fun world

Had to look up carte blanche :P but yeah normally stadium project don't go through because of the main design. If it's a very complex arquitectural design, structural designers will charge a very step price since figuring the details and the main functions of the structure will take a lot of models for it to be considered safe against seismic, wind and dead load effects according to local and international norms. That's why PNC Park in Pittsburgh and Oracle Park are two of my favorate stadiums since they're close to water and the engineering it took to contain all of that water pressure must have been fascinating

In the early years of the San Francisco MLB park (then Pac Bell Park, now Oracle Park), they had small solid sheet metal rails in front of some of the seats that were awful because from them you could not see the field at all without standing up...and the ushers were firm about not letting you stand because then the others above you couldn't see. They were advertised as obstructed view tickets, but they literally blocked 7/8 of your sight and were not worth anything at all. Then they tried replacing the metal with clear plastic and leaving the frames, but it was no better because the view was still blocked some by the frame and the plastic not only got dirty but distorted the view as well. Like trying to watch through dirty glasses that were not your prescription. I think in 2004 or 2005 finally got rid of them and all seats are now unobstructed.

Why did you not mention the drawback? The rise of the nose bleed seats? Those who got seats in front of the poles were practically right next to the field and since most games were not sold out, one could argue to average fan of the average game had better views than in modern stadiums.

Awesome video. Contrary to popular belief, gladiator games in the Roman Empire rarely ended in death, and if it did happen, it was usually by complete accident. At the time, gladiators were trained by entertainment companies, and the owners didn't want them to die because it was costly to train a replacement. Also, the games back then were their version of the WWE, purely for entertainment. I took a Roman civilization class in college and Adam Ruins Everything has a great video on it.

Maple Leaf Gardens, the former home of the Toronto Maple Leafs, didn't use poles and pillars for its design either, despite being built in 1931.
The trick with the Gardens is that the entire bowl of seating works as a flying buttress, giving support to the exterior walls. The 4 corners of the building then work as arches to hold up the roof, giving the building its iconic domed appearance and high ceiling.
This didn't change even after a renovation in the '60s added a second mezzanine at the north and south sides of the arena, although it did block out the entrance windows that provided natural sunlight, which was rectified with additional lighting.
Conn Smythe, the Leafs owner, designed it this way to both build it quickly in time for the next hockey season [it broke ground and opened only 6 months apart] and because he didn't want to repeat the same mistakes that led to all the obstructed seating at the old Boston Garden. The only downside was that seating placement in the upper corners was a bit awkward.
