  • June Carter was born in the rugged mountains of Maces Springs, Virginia, to Ezra and Maybelle Carter, pioneers of country music. On stage from a very young age, June found her niche in the spotlight with her vivacious personality and down-home sense of humor. Her confidence and spirit were what attracted Johnny Cash to her in the late 1950s. On the road together, they quickly bonded. June was his helpmate and closest companion. They were married for forty years, through addiction and success, tragedy and triumph.
Anchored in Love is an inside look into the life of June Carter Cash, through the eyes of her only child with Johnny Cash-John Carter Cash. With skillful prose, he reveals new information about the legendary woman through his tender memories and heartwarming stories.

I met Johnny Cash in 1978. I was a valet at Hugo's restaurant in Cohasset Ma. They were performing at the South Shore Music Circus in Cohasset. Mr. Cash, June, and John Carter were staying at a hotel named Kimballs by the Sea Motor Inn. The hotel was about a 1/4 mile from the restaurant. One of the bus boys was commissioned to deliver some take out they had ordered. He asked if I would drive him to the hotel, and that the food was for Johnny Cash. When we got to the door of his Hotel room, i can still see the look of surprise on Mr. Cash's face seeing the two of us there. In the room I could see June, she was reaching for her purse, and John Carter was jumping up and down on the couch. Mr. Cash gave us a $5 each., and I shook his huge hand. I was seventeen at the time. Oh by the way, they had ordered Lobster, and a pitcher of milk. I always remembered thinking, who eat's lobster with milk? In retrospect the milk was probably for John Carter.

@@barkrussell4083 I suppose the fact that I wasn't a huge Johnny Cash fan in the 70's made me a little more objectionable towards her. She really was not a huge talent. I was always taken aback by her comedy. It was not timed well. Country music is all about words, the story, the voice, not the instruments you play. In country music, you have to be a really good instrumentalist to make a name outside of the artists circle. And I don't know. Quite frankly, I've gone over that entire family's so call music, and...well... eh. The only person of the clan who had any real talent was Anita. I get the respect, but the truth of the matter is, if JOHNNY CASH did not come along, they would have faded into irrelevance. They were not that good, at least the momma and her four girls, they were not that good. I am sorry. Something never sat right about June Carter Cash. She has always painted as this woman who single handedly saved Johnny Cash, but all I ever saw from her was someone who never sat well with me, a woman whose talent tells me she should be sitting in the audience with the other wives. Additionally, I always turned the channel when she talk. I hated to hear her talk, still do. I never believed the voice we were hearing was her real voice. I never understood what was so great about their marriage that her relationship with Johnny Cash had to be run down our throats. I mean really, were they the only married couple in Country Music who loved each other? And while I have to admit that I was never inclined to look for this until now, I never looked at either her nor Johnny Cash and say to myself, wow, they are really in love. Now I am researching their so called love story. And I gotta tell you, it is pretty shocking.

@@soniacurrie4378 I thought that same way most all my 54 years until recently. It seems Cash was a superstar and could have had any woman in the world but I think he was just crazy about her. After seeing "Walk the Line" (which was an awful movie by the way), and doing some other research I have grown to admire June and probably didn't appreciate her enough. I don't think her ride with him was all rosie, with drugs and an affair with Anita, June forgave him for all of that. I have started listening to the Carters, Cash and old country a lot more lately, perhaps being sentimental, but enjoying it very much. I do understand what you were saying about their marriage seemed to be forced on the public a little too much. I think the main reason was Johnny wanted her up there with him, just plain and simple. But the ironic thing was that Johnny Cash didn't need any vocal help, he was dynamic on stage, so maybe sometimes folks thought that June was a distraction. But BTW, there aren't that many successful marriages in music or Hellywood, i.e. Johnny was June's 3rd marriage, she was his 2nd, so it is satisfying to see an example of it working right. But anyway I miss them both. Footnote: the Carter's were a great little group and made great harmony and music. Maybelle's "scratch" guitar playing style was a ground breaking sound. Anita did have a beautiful soprano voice but Helen and June were not that bad, the groups harmony was great.

Nor did she care how it would affect those four innocent girls lives or His poor wife who had sacrificed everything for him and then was abandoned, and left there in Southern California while he was out whoring around with June Carter the good Christian women! I guess in a way you could say what she received was poetic justice, The relationship wasn’t that Rosie, Johnny Cash also had an affair with her younger sister Anita, it doesn’t get any worse that! Yes God is our judge, but facts are facts, and God wasn’t sleeping while this was going on! 🤣

God, I am 69% in this book and I don't know how much more of this I can read. Do you still have 100 more pages of crap to tell us? This is such a horrible story, a horrible life. A horrible way to live! And no, God do not talk to anyone through a black bird. Whatever fortune that came your way, it was through your Dad's enormous talent. Your mom was an addict all along. She is what is called a functioning addict. When she got sixty, that ability to fool people, failed her. That was all that was. Why wasn't your dad so cool about it? Why did their relationship seemed to have improved? Because that was the only June he knew. Because he kept her secret. Their relationship improved because he no longer had to lie to at least you all about her. He was still lying to us, telling us how she got him off of drugs. The only person Johnny Cash had was Vivian. Even his daughter talked about Vivian's rage when he became a full blown addict. Now that she is older and is able to look at it from an adult perspective, how else should her mother have reacted. What Vivian needed was for family and friends to stand with her to save him. Instead they all stood with him and dismissed her. She lost. June won. Look at the life June gave him. When he left Vivian, his creative juices dried up. I am a stranger, looking at your life in pictures, well, because he was a celebrity. His best days was from 1955 to 1961. Those were the best days of his creative life. His very worst began when June became important to him.

@@Hannibalonthelamb Well, you are close. This story have intoxicated me. I am obsessed. But no amount of money could make me fall for Johnny Cash. I have come to know him up close, and I would have never taken him home. Besides, the only woman Johnny Cash ever loved was his Vivian. Listen to his documentaries. He says her name different from everyone else. His voice trembles when he says her name. June who? He did not love her. I am just as shock as you. All the evidence are there. The book his son wrote about what he observed inside his house, was the final nail in the coffin. He wrote that Johnny Cash asked that all her stuff be removed. Johnny Cash probably imagined he could say that and everyone would assume he miss her so much he could not bare to see her stuff. Truth of the matter is, that is not how people who are grieving respond to the loss of someone they love. It is a miscalculation of many criminals. Not that I am saying anything nefarious. But yeah, he was liken to a criminal in that respect. We all got it wrong. Her death was a source of relieve, He was a man who was dying, yet briefly we saw a bit of life in him. All you gotta do is the research. Just treat everyone as white noise, and you yourself will see it. And the more I research Johnny Cash, the more I think about it, I am not absolutely certain everyone actually believed he was in love with June, so much as they were simply saying what they believed Johnny would like them to say that. I do not believe his sister thought this. She was mindful to avoid that conversation all together in an interview. If the love story was greater than life itself, then it would be a focal point of the interview with Cash sister. Also, I am reading his base player, Marshall Grant's book. He seem to go out of his way, not to paint a huge love story about John and June. You get the impression that his respect was reserved for Vivian, and that June was simply a part of his job. Johnny Cash was a mystery. I believe with all my heart he was in love with Vivian and not June. His son wrote how crazy he became a few years after he was married with June, meaning a few years after his own birth. Why? I believe that it is because he had already desecrated her. He had already done everything to her imaginable to get her to free him from their marriage and nothing worked. For her, being Mrs. Johnny Cash was intoxicated and she was not about to give it up. But that was good for him though. He was a dog. What even he though was love was just him being a dog.
