Mother Maybelle gifted my mother a pair of her earrings back when my mother had a television show in Cincinnati. She said Mother Maybelle was the most genuinely sweet woman she'd ever met, and my mother was not afraid to criticize people, so Ms. Carter must have been a top-notch person.

@@andrewdressler6173 I wasn't lying. If you go on Amazon and look for the book "Images of America: Cincinnati Television," you will see my mother listed as Ramona Burnette (née Watkins; Burnette was her first husband's last name) on pages 56 and 109. My father, "Bud Chase" (actual name Arthur Erwin Churvis) is on pages 77, 83, 109, and 116. I wish it had some pictures from my mother's show; it had some from my father's shows. I talked with the author, Jim Friedman, about ten years ago and we had a great talk. He didn't know that Bud and Ramona had married after WCPO, so we had a lot to talk about.

So you were ingenuine when you apologized to me? I am telling the absolute truth, sir. Go to my father's Find A Grave page, where you'll notice all the memorial messages from fans, etc, even though it was back in the fifties. On findagrave, search for Arthur Erwin Churvis. You will see that someone posted an image of an old newspaper ad for one of his shows, and you will see my mother Ramona's link, too. Two of his shows are mentioned on the back outside cover of the book I mentioned to you earlier. Is **THIS** enough to prove that I am not lying to you?

Mother Maybelle and June are my pilots!
If you play guitar and have not learned to play "The Wildwood Flower", you have at least one more pleasurable task in life! It's not a difficult piece of picking.
Alas, the lyrics always escape, but it is one song that MUST be sung by a woman. I tried to rewrite the lyric for a male but failed miserably.
After many years, I found a woman who could and would sing it on stage, while I played the guitar. It was wonderful. I was smiling like a fool through the entire song. I always wanted to play The Wildwood Flower for a live audience. When I finally did this, I felt I could die happy.
    God Bless The Carter Family!

    • @calebbasile2219
      @calebbasile2219 Před 2 měsíci

I’m learning it right now, not difficult at all, but so fun to play. It is a little tricky, I wish I would’ve learned it as a beginner. I have the first part of the song down. I had to put my daughter to bed so I’ll practice the rest later. I agree, it only makes sense if a woman sings it, Johnny Cash did his version, with Maybelle of course, which was changed for a man, but it’s a totally different melody only until the wildwood flower line. So it’s not really like being able to sing the song as a man. I want to teach my daughter how to play this song, she’s only 3 right now.
      Love the story!

My father was born in 1924, there was something special about this generation of people and how they lived their lives. my father told me that most people back then were poor as dirt and didn't have luxuries like cars, most of them were small farmers and when they were not working which was not very often they entertained each other with music, it's one of the only things they had to do. My dad played the fiddle and did it well. They were hard working honest people, they fought in world war two and Korea MD sacrificed so much for this country. people like this is what we need in this country right now.

Okay... so June was just an adorable person. She has this innocence about the way she talks. Like when she's telling the story about the fat lady in the beauty contest at like 40:00. The way that she starts cracking up as everyone else is laughing at her is incredibly sweet. She seemed like a very genuine person.

I have been working on a book that answers the question "Will You Miss Me When I'm Gone" for over 4 years which focus's on mainly Helen, June and Anita Carter along with their mom's band - "The Carter Sisters and Mother Maybelle" They had a great career and life's story. My book follows the Carters through 7 radio stations. They were such a unique and most talented all-female family band that rose to be a household name that filled every venue they played. The first band to really tour almost all of America from Maine to San Antonio by the early 50's. Heck they were the only band and females that Elvis Presley opened for and was billed lower than on the Opry tour for over a year. They helped all these great artists in different ways along the way, Chet Atkins, Hank Williams Sr, Elvis Presley, Marty Robbins, Johnny Cash and even Waylon Jennings later.

Absolutely the most wonderful story by Mark Zwonitzer and Charles Hirshberg and a sequel would be great. Really I am so amazed at all the details of their lives, musical and everyday.

    This is a terrific documentary!
Helen’s section about the “Carter Scratch” guitar picking style is excellent ~~ she was outstanding musician, too! Helen’s sons, David and Danny Jones, Rosy Carter (who passed in 2003), John Carter Cash and Carlene Carter continue to sing the Carter songs and compose their own songs. Mother Maybelle essentially invented lead guitar.
Family and friends got together and sang in a circle in their living room when these ladies were youngsters, a wonderful way to learn and share music.
I didn’t realize that the Carter tunes influenced other musicians such as Woody Guthrie ("This Land is Your Land), and surely Johnny Cash, who married June.
Thanks so much for posting this documentary. I love the inclusion of a clip with a hilarious young June Carter that showcases her comedic strengths.

In the last few weeks my dad was recalling to me his 'growing up days' and how he knew the Carter family as they only lived a few miles from each other. He said Mother Maybelle was especially wonderful and kind.
My dad had some of the first recordings The Carter family had made, and years later, in Reno, gifted them to June when she was married to Jonny Cash. Dad was a policeman by then and Jonny wasn't found of meeting him but June was happy to see him and loved the records! lol
My dad is 87 now and has many stories to tell but the days of him growing up and the people he grew up knowing, are my favorites.
