Description: This time in western culture was a rebirth of ancient cosmopolitan values and lifestyles, a "renaissance" in old French. Thanks to the cultural openess of the "Islamic Golden Age" during the Abbasid period-from about 750 to 950, muslim scholars preserved and greatly elaborated on ancient literature, math, and astronomical works, interestingly enough, and the western world was able to rediscover the ancient philosophies developed in Greece and Rome two thousand years before.
This led many new western thinkers to reconsider life as more than a submissive and solemn purgatory on the way to Heaven, or Hell. Perhaps it should be lived with a passion and fervor for exploring other cultures and the universe around us, in a search for knowledge and progress that is characteristic of this culturally explosive time in history.
I always hated learning dry facts without context and having to memorize the names of things without understanding what they actually WERE. As Mark Twain famously remarked, "I tried not to let my schooling get in the way of my education."
Here I try my best to explore this era that made it common to be able to read, write, and choose your own pathway in life, as opposed to taking it for granted that you carry on doing whatever countless generations of your family before you had done.

This channel is just so underrated. Fell asleep earlier today while listening to this and I had an amazingly vivid dream about the time period you're talking about. Almost seemed like you narrated my dreams. Thanks mate.
@26.15 That image is of Saint Bartholomew holding his own flayed skin (his method of martyrdom) - but it is also a Michelangelo self-portrait! Until recently it was the only one known (another has been discovered on a different Vatican fresco). His reasons for depicting himself in such a macabre fashion have been endlessly debated. There has been a lot of speculation that it is a complex philosophical or poetic metaphor, or even an act of metaphorical self-punishment or a prayer for redemption. Michelangelo was very religious and he seems to have been very internally conflicted about his sexuality. He was mocked for not having sexual relationships (and was notorious for being dirty and living like a beggar) but he wrote at least 30 love poems to a 23-year-old Italian noblemen he met while in his 50s. Whether they had a physical relationship has been a matter of endless debate, but the poems were considered so indecent that the gender pronouns were changed on publication, so it seems unlikely that their relationship was merely platonic. Plus, one of the four drawings he gave him was of the Rape of Ganymede, which to my mind is like they found a magazine called Twink Buttholes under his bed or something. Whatever his inspiration, Michelangelo was a complicated person: tortured, unhappy and socially awkward; the total opposite of his rival DaVinci, who was funny, charming, very good looking and not shy at all about his fondness for hot young boys. Yet because of his tortured nature, I find Michelangelo the more relatable and more fascinating character, although I have always found that self-portrait to be very, very sad.
Ha. I watch a lot of documentaries and read a lot of wikipedia while I should be working. Art is my speciality though. I am still so ignorant of so many things - I have to listen to some of your philosophy videos several times to understand. Plus, I failed maths and logic at university. PS. You mean DaVinci, baby ;-)

Your videos and generous disposition are very nice and I appreciate that you post them. It occured to me that since you enjoy being challenged, if you ever wanted to encounter the opposite point of view about the Renaissance and Middle Ages to the one you have here, you may find it stimulating to check out Rene Guenon. Specifically, The Reign of Quantity and the Sign of the Times or Introduction to the Study of the Hindu Doctrines (only one small part of it is actually directly about Hinduism).
Or if you prefer a shorter introduction to his works, the Crisis of the Modern World is a short read.
