- A Sony Trinitron KV-1741R from 1976. It works fine after 37 years. At the end of this video there's a preview of the 1978 Panasonic PV-1100 VCR that I got with the Trinitron from an estate sale. It will get its own video soon.
I've uploaded the Panasonic VCR video. Watch it here:
• 1978 Panasonic PV-1100...
I worked for Sony corporation when this set was being assembled. ..They were located in Rancho Bernardo, California and they also made their own CRT in that facility. I still have my name badge when I was an employee:).
From 1971 to 1982 sony made the best & most beautiful tv sets I have ever seen .
I bought my KV1217 in 1981 .
Thanks for posting , Beautiful all the way !!!!
True that
Wow.. great picture..
& sound ..
thnx for refreshing my childhood memories... we had a B/W tv in those days.. not Sony but some other brand.. it really feels very nice watching TV on this TV.. instead watching TV on todays flat LCD panels..!!!
Great picture for such an old TV!!
The remote we had only had one channel button, so if you skipped past the channel you wanted you had to cycle back through the rest of the 11 channels to get back to it. Fun times.
wow good info. Never knew as I was born in 85
You took me back in time to my childhood! Thanks for sharing! I grew up in the 80's with one of these. Awesome TV!
Classic, great TV - (Parents bought us one in '77 - good job Mom & Dad!)
Very good sound quality of your video! I love the vintage devices. Congratulations to preserve these vintages!
Sony Trinitrons is the God of all TVs!!
Seriosly the sound and quality on it is incredible!!

Still have mid 90s Trinitron in my room still had its uses for retro gaming and VHS.
I got most of my televisions from the dump, the curb and second hand shops!
That is awesome! You Americans sure used to love wood-grain appliances!
I had the same TV and stand in '76. Still have the stand. I think it cost $50 at the time, which was a lot of money back then. No VHS, but I did have a SL7200 Betamax on the bottom shelf. I backed-up the bottom shelf with some plywood since the 1/4" pressed board it was made of really wasn't up to the nearly 50 pound weight of that Betamax. That Betamax hasn't worked in years but I do have several later models that do.
I have one of these that works quite well. Not sure what to do with it, as I'm moving onward to 4K. But it has worked amazingly well all these years, and I bought it new in 1976! I'm too attached to it to toss it, as it has been such a reliable companion for so long. But we're now in a digital age, and I can't see storing it forever.
My parents had almost the same Sony TV from this year, 5 years before me, it last long over 20 years. It cost then, like a 4K, UHD cost today, in human money.
My dad has the same model. It still works to this day.
Wow, my parents had that exact Sony TV from circa 1990 - 1998. I had no idea that it was a 1970s design!
Awesome set. Love it.
Whoooaaah those colors on this tv really looks bright.
And since you connected a digital box to it, it should look & sound slightly better then analogue signals from the 70's.despites it only has antenna input.
I still need a vintage set!!!!!!!
Those are the red green and blue background adjustments...that's how the correct b&w background is adjusted.....
The CRT bias will adj the overall brightness of the crt...
You have a real gem there, it's in great condition.
I repaired TVs for 35 yrs and I owned one of those myself as well as repairing many of them.
Very difficult tv to repair because Sony technology was so far advanced.
I really miss those days..!!
I own a Trinitron from the early 2000's and, it's such a beast of a television! I'm sure it weighs more than 300 pounds.
TheShadowWalker How big is the screen? I bought a 27" Sony Trinitron in 2000 off the internet and it weighed 96 pounds. But I know there are bigger Trinitrons. I know that Mitsubishi made a 61" CRT set in the mid 90s that weighed 750 pounds. You can imagine a 61" screen at 480p had a horrible picture. They had to cease making these sets because the size made them too unstable. The picture tubes would die after about 9 months.
I still have that same model
A '76 Trinitron was our family TV for over 10 years. I remember my mom telling me it cost $350 and "we would never spend that much on a TV." But it was handed down from her younger bachelor brother who was joining the navy. We used it till the late '80's. It just wouldn't die. We bought a bigger screen when they became affordable, but not because the Trinitron ever failed us.
Matthew Jenkins Trintrons are "die hard" TVs. The only way they break down is they're in some type of natural disaster like a flood or a hurricane or something. I lost my Trinitron after 14 years in a bad storm. The wind was so strong it broke my windows and it rained on my TV for 3 days straight. Unfortunately I wasn't home at the time. I was visiting my family during the Christmas holidays. What a terrible thing to come home to. lol.
+ldchappell1 I feel bad for you, did you get the windows repaired.
Modern 8-bit Yes A new window was installed the next day. My landlord has always been good about repairs. I was upset about losing my Sony. I didn't have an actual TV for 3 years after that. I got my news from the radio and watched DVDs on my computer.
+ldchappell1 So far I haven't had the greatest experience with Trinitrons, I picked up one from 1983 at the dump and it doesn't work and I have no idea why. I checked the fuses and it still doesn't work :( I won't give up though, I still want a working one. They're the best.
MrEthan520 Anonymous Back in the 90s, my friends, who knew more about TV repair than I did helped me repair and restore discarded TVs which we give to senior citizens and disabled people on fixed incomes. Then they changed the analog signal to digital which made it harder for us to do that.
Two years ago I had a 13" Sony Trinitron that I couldn't give away. It was in excellent condition. The manufacture date on the sticker was August 1994.
. I tried to sell it for $20 but nobody wanted it. After a week, I taped a note to it, "free TV" and set the TV next to trash in my apartment building. The next day it was still there. I added to the note "Free TV - Works great!" and still nobody wanted it. The building maintenance guy finally took it and disposed of it.
We gave up on TVs and these days we fix up desktop computers. I'm using one right now.
A fine looking Sony TV set with a VCR hooked up to it.
Very nice TV. Love sony Trinitron.
What a score man, what a score!! When I started setting up my game room and started picking up things for my collection (this started around 2006), I saw a RCA 19" B/W portable TV on a stand for sale at a house sale. At that time I wasn't sure what pieces I wanted to collect and I let it go. They were selling it for $15, said it works, and I let it go. I've never seen another vintage TV working with the stand of that era again. Your Sony and the RCA and stand is a perfect time travel unit to show. Great buy man! Eventually I found a 12" RCA B/W portable made from the 60s that I now display. It doesn't work too well, but that's OK. Looks good. I've never found another stand from that era.. For my 12" TV, I bought a new stand for it that shows well in my game room. See ya -- Atco
I've beat myself up a few times too, Atco, when I didn't get something while I had the chance. Case in point: If you watch my video about the 1963 Zenith 19" B+W set with original stand (link below), I had actually been to that estate sale the day before (quite a drive) and passed on the set. But I thought about it overnight and went all the way back the next day hoping it was still there. It was and I didn't pass on it this time. Keep looking, the great set is still out there with Atco's name on it!

I looked at that Zenith. You lucked out seeing that portable still on sale. Did I see correctly that you got it for $5? Wow. That is the perfect unit I wanted to have in my game room. My 12" RCA is displayed and is Ok for me, but will keep an eye for another portable on a stand. Unfortunately, as I've seen, they are pretty rare anymore. I see big consoles around often, but have no space for those. So, I'll keep up on the hunt. See ya -- Atco
Great video, could you somehow provide a HD picture taken from the front of the TV? we are trying to make some overlays for emulators and great quality pictures of old TV's are really hard to find :/
We had the same tv and remote. I remember my dad soldering the battery contacts on the board I'm sure that one has the same problem it was a weak point in the board from pressing the buttons the stress on the board would break the battery solder joints.
I have the same exact set but I have a slight pin coushion problem
The RG and B adjustments are for gray scale.
Nice set!
We had a Sony Trinitronat home in the 1970s - finally conked out.
When I was in college (1970s), I used a videotape of a film from my film class to watch and write a term paper about it - I was told the video cassette alone was worth $50.00 ALONE, even if it had no video of the film I was studying: "so don't screw it up!" It all worked out well, and I was so intrigued by the film that I bought it later (also on analog) but now I can see it here at CZcams! Film was "Un Chien Andalou".(Luis Bunuel/Salvador Dali).
0:57 Those recessed side handles looked more formal than a regular pull-grip on the top, but they were damn-near useless. I always found it easier to just carry the TV like a baby, with the heavy screen facing inward. It's interesting that even a Trinitron, which had only 2 or 3 tubes from the start and were made all-SS, other than the CRT, shortly thereafter, still had a cord interlocked with the back cover (a feature intended to make tube replacement safer) this late. Sears (Sanyo/Warwick) also used cords like that through the seventies, but most solid state equipment, even hot-chassis models, came without the interlock by that time.
Ese televisor,es un fierro...!!!
AFAIK there were high countervailing tariffs (and I think quotas as well) on Japanese TVs in the 70s and 80s, which explains why the TV was assembled in the US. I have a Toshiba from the 80s which was assembled in Tennessee for the same reason.
+irtbmtind89 I believe size and weight had a lot to do with it as well; it must cost a fortune to ship a 100 pound set from the far East. Seems that even after the Japanese came to dominate the home electronics market, most console TVs and large speakers will still assembled here. The only smaller items I remember being made here in the '70s were clock radios with made-in-USA Telechron mechanical clocks.
Thanks for sharing
Quite the display from 1976. Quite the design, too. Never seen anything quite like it.
just got a 1995 30 inch or so sony triniton with its tv cabinet and built in speakers, can anyone tell me if its a good score plz?
Apparently you could change channels at the dinner table, by hitting a knife and work together!
A question: Why Trinitron screens has a very fine horizontal line ..? (1/3 of screen)
I really want a TV like this, but sadly these seem to be super hard to find, I hope one comes up someday.
These T.V.s are not that hard to find. Just GO to your local "Salvation Army Thrift Store" and you will find up 26" inch CRT Color T.V.s with Remote Controls ranging from $10 to $30 (NO Tax.) Sales are Final!!
One more statement I forgot to say. ALL Electronics at your local Salvation Army Thrift Stores are all "Used or really used Electronics which includes T.V.s". But most Thrift Stores of the Salvation Army have A.C. Outlets that allow to test your old CRT Televisions on A.C. House current to make certain that your old Color Televisions work properly and the supplied used remote controls also work properly before you buy your used "Electronics at the Salvation Army TV. Thrift Stores, Goodluck with your Thrift Stores search for Color-Televisions.!!
Don't worry, I already found a vintage TV and I'm getting it pretty soon. I hope it works though.
Well, you can go to the dumpsant try for some luck. I found a 1981 sanyo working in a trash container
Ha no worries, I'm sure I'll find one at a yard sale someday or something.
i love this crt set
Freaking awesome!
After getting a good job, one of the things I bought was a KV1943R the model just after this one. I shelled out $525 in 1979 for it. And that was discounted, local pickup. That comes to > $1,700 today. It is still in the basement since it so heavy and there is a bunch of stuff on top of it. Anyone want it ?
She's a beauty...don't let anyone tell you any different, when they quip, "look at that old tv ewww" That TV has survived many TV generations after flat screen HDTV's have been purchased and since died.
thats a cool trinitron. 2 closest i have to that is a kv-1217 and a kv-1510
Now thats a proper television! None of this mass produced HD nonsence for those who can't tell the difference between grey and black! :)
amazing
Saw for the very first Space Shuttle landing at Edwards on this TV.
Can you catch a bus out to other antique shops in your town? I occasionally catch a bus to an antique shops when I'm in town or in a different town/city.
In my school, there pansonic 32 inch crt tv , i think it is from 1998. It always have some problem it. Sometimes it do not have sound , and no singal, and hate the freeze. This tv is 1976. But is still useful. I like that.
Where do you buy these
Classic !!!
How do u connect the vhs to that tv? Ive been trying but cant figure it out.
Wow, are there really that many vintage televisions in your area? That sounds pretty awesome!
I do check my thrift store, but the antique/junk shop down the street from my house moved away last year. I saw a big 19 inch 1970s Zenith there last year. I took a picture too. I am really just looking for a nice small 13 inch colour set with knobs (and preferably with wood grain [fake or real]).
I acually like old-fashioned crt telivisions. When I was born HDTVs only starded coming in. I'm only 11.
Trinitron: The TV Walkman
Econoquick meant you got a reasonably quick picture without preheat as many other sets kept the tube on all the time even when turning the TV off so the set would provide an instant picture when turning on. One was saving electric by not having the set drawing power 24 hours a day. Thus Econoquick was economical by having a CRT that would warm up quick without drawing constant power.
Well, I can't go out the city very often.
Any Sony Trinitron colour TV set can be featured in Sony Betamax VCR TV commercials back then.
Surely there is more stuff outside your neighbourhood? I'm not sure if 'neighbourhood' has a different meaning in cities, because I've always lived in small/rural towns.
My parents had this TV in the late 70s - early 80s when it died. Except that it was 21 inches. Even after my parents got it repaired, the color was intermittent and the picture was poor.
So almost the same model is for sale near me, its actually a 1742 probably the same. I love the video review but can you tell me how heavy it is? Im not sure if its gonna work on the shelf i wanna use it for. Also what are those knobs for on the inner flap for the channels?
It weighs 64 pounds. Those knobs behind the door are for fine-tuning channels. The others are simple picture controls like color, bright, hue etc.
que antigüedad
What was Samsung doing that time?
We had a 78 Sony trinatron it cost 449 bucks for a 19 in
Does the remote have its own model number printed on it?
RM-302
My VCR like that cost over 1200.00 in the early days. Hard to believe you can buy a DVD player for 10.00 now.
At the Salvation Army Thrift Stores , I bought a SONY N765 MTS HiFi Stereo 6 Head VCR. I paid $5 for the VCR and $2 for the Sony Specific Remote Control unit(Remote Control is the most sophisticated Shuttle Round Button Control + Buttons specific Sony-VCR remote control unit I have ever bought and works 100% out 100% like brand New both the VCR Sony and its specifice MTS HiFi Stereo VCR and VCR Specific Sony Remote Control Unit. Pass by your Salvation Army Thrift Stores and see what you can buy used for only $10 or $30 dollars (NO Tax.) test your Electronics at the Thrift Stores on the A.C. outlets before you buy. These old Electronics + T.V.s can still be purchased cheap at final Sales at your local Salvation Army Thrift Stores in the Electronics Department!!
Dan, were you able to find a replacement remote controller for the Trinitron KV-1741R? Sometimes, they might appear on ebay under the vintage TV category. Or, if possible, you could find someone who might be able to fix the remote.
I bought another original remote on eBay shortly after getting this Trinitron. Guess what...it didn't work either. Either I have two bad remotes or the remote control system is dead on the Sony's end.
You could take the TV into a specialist who could take a look of the remote control system within your TV set to see if there's a problem with it. Might be worth a shot.
+Dan O'Connor You can also use it with the soundbar as well.
i had the exact one growing up, How much does it weigh?
Nick Acosta It's almost 64 pounds.
do you use this tv daily?
Do you check antique/junk shops? Also, find some local online 'Buy, sell & trade' pages and post ads. If you sign up for Facebook, do the same thing with local 'buy, sell & trade' pages. I get heaps of replies with different vintage televisions, though they are usually a bit too large for me. Some of my latest ones include a woodgrain 19" Hitachi, 23" woodgrain Philips (from the late 1980s, but the cabinet is bad) and a 19" woodgrain Toshiba. I've gotten heaps of replies.
San Diego was were they made TV.
datsunmadman Correction: San Francisco
Would this be good for lightgun?
Ultimate lightgun tv
I had one of these growing up, and it worked really well with Duck Hunt
I AM CRYING .. Sorry
So no composite/component?
Nope, it's too old.
سوني و باناسونيك من افضل الاجهزة الكهربائية
what was exactly ECONOQUICK?
It was meant to be an energy-saving feature that reduced the amount of voltage powering up the TV to counteract surges.
TV is good but in our country it is rare
📺😍
Hey Dan - any interest in selling that TV? It is just like the one my parents had when I grew up in the early 80's.
No thanks. Did you know you can see this model Trinitron on a show set in the 1980's - "The Goldbergs" on Wednesday night on ABC. This is the model they use in one of their rooms on the show and they usually feature a close-up of it every week.
+Dan O'Connor Thanks for the reply Dan; I understand not wanting to sell. I didn't know about that TV show but will check it out. If you ever change your mind on that TV......you've got my info.
Said what?
n o s t a l g i a
They are not too, too common in my neighborhood.
Comes with an earphone Jack and Kojack
I don't know if I should be offended.... Or accept that someone just said that...
*Actual TV cameras of studio help to TV set image screen can be seen better than original CTR Orticon cameras. Also now a days original signal is 1080 lines (digitally decodified to NTSC signal I think),because your SONY® Trinitron has real 480 horizontal lines (525 NTSC system) , so colors are stronger and definition is so much better, white ballance is perfect now, etcetera. I have a 1992 Trinitron (black cabinet). I like so much more the wooden finishing cabinet, silver details, chrome bottons, similar to a forniture is. Now TV sets are a screen enterely, cabinet is inexistent, invisible, flat like a picture in the wall, and for me it is not ideal. I prefer old shape as your Sony Trinitron KV-1741R* .

It is amazing how much this cost in the day, and now it is old news, and find these poor tv's and VTR's in the trash now... They called them Video Tape Recorders once... LOL! Sony had the Beta tape system too. Like this one, I used to own. Ah, the memories! But, as far as I am concerned. Sony was the Cat's meow! www.ebay.com/itm/Sony-DVW-M2000-DVW-M2000-Digital-Betacam-Studio-VTR-Player-Recorder-/321584765483?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item4adff21a2b
***** I liked Betamax. My first VCR was a Panasonic Betamax that I bought in 1983. I think I paid $545 for it. I always thought Betamax had a better quality picture than VHS. Even though I couldn't find prerecorded Beta tapes after about 1987 I still used the Betamax to record off the air until the late 90s.
ldchappell1
Yes! It did have a superior picture, and the tape was smaller as well. Still my favorite for studio recordings, with sony equipment...
Digital Stream DX 9950 The Best DTA Converter Box works better
I'm gonna guess that you are a Sagittarius.
On November 30, 2016 CBS went letterbox, you know when the 16:9 image is shrunken down to fit on the 4:3 screen with black bars at the top and bottom. Before then CBS edgecropped the image to make it fit the whole 4:3 screen and chop off the sides of the screen. that's what CBS has been doing for YEARS!!! Because of this, CBS was my favorite of the big three networks because the other two, NBC and ABC were letterbox. That was, until 11/30/2016 when CBS went letterbox. This made me hate all three networks including CBS! My cable provider is Service Electric and my parents pay for the limited basic plan. CBS, if your seing this please for the love of god go back to edgecrop! OK?
Fleetwood Mac blows
A lot of people feel the same way, I'm sure. When I saw your comment in my email I thought 'What's he talking about? This is about a Trinitron, not anything about Fleetwood Mac'. I made this video 3 years ago and had forgotten about the Panasonic VCR preview. Thanks for watching the video to the end!
