I just got a northern blue tongued! He's (or she's) my first reptile and I'm in love with him ❤️ he was born in July, so he's pretty young. I bought him from a breeder which was great because I have his number and I've texted him a lot for help. He was around $500 (I'm Canadian) so yeah it hurt my wallet but he is the absolute best and I would say 100% worth it.

He actually seems to like us , he will come over and climb on us and just snuggle. I didn't expect that. He is so intercative and fun. He also uses his cage , he does not stay buried all the time . We upgraded to a 4x2 and he uses all that space !!!! We were used to our beardie who is super chill and doesn't move lol. I have both, an almost 3 month old bearded dragon, and an Indonesian blue tongue skink, that is about 10 months old. I love them both, but the bearded dragon is so much more fun to watch and hold. My BTS doesn't mind being held, but she pees on me if I don't hold her right. Plus, I can't hold her outside of her habitat for too long, I live in the desert (New Mexico) and she needs the humidity. I guess I would recommend a bearded dragon for personality, but a BTS if you want an easier to feed reptile.

Depending on the species of bluetongue they can tollerate a relatively huge variet of conditions. The common bluetounge Tiliqua scincoides scincoides (I had to look that up) is found all the way from the southern most point of mainland Australia all the way up to southern Queensland. The blotched or souther bluetounge is found even further south in tasmania where temps do fall below freezing both these species can bromate and many keepers here turn their heating off completely in the winter maybe only warming the lizards up a few times for a small feed if at all. When I had them growing up, they'd spend about half of the time outside in a homemade run in the garden. It was a common keeping practise in the past for them to basically live in a box and you'd take them out into the sun everyday to warm them up and bask. I don't know about the species and morphs in the US but bluetounges from the south of Australia are as tough as nails. I've never heard of anyone here losing them young but I know of plenty of people including experienced keepers suffering loses from sick bearded Dragons. They are from a much smaller range, at least climaticly and the weather and climate that they come from is much less variable.
The animal export ban is badly done. There is almost no legal way to export most animals even if you have decades of captive breeding. This has just created a huge black market for taking animals from the wild as most captive reptiles are tracked by a licence. Blue tongues especially the common bluetounge have actually done reasonably well with urbanisation. It's not uncommon to still find them in plenty of suburban gardens. Hell I saw a bunch of babies at the start of this summer, they also have a huge captive bred population, it would be nice to be able to send some captive bred bluetounges to north america to refresh the genepool over there.

I've got a young northern blue tongue and she's NOT a fan of being picked up but is getting better. She's very much like our cat in that she prefers to be talked at as opposed to being touched. When I do pick her up I usually have her in a small hand towel and this seems to make her feel more secure.

My parents used to rescue/raise baby blue tounges from the more populated neighborhoods and re-release them when they were bigger to protect them from dogs and cats.
If handled a lot as babies they can be very sweet, common for them to sleep on your arm or shoulder for hours but that's just my experience. We've had beardies too and they just seemed more hyper but less intelligent😅

Where our beardie you can take out and he will just stay there , I dont think he thinks much lol. But he is a good boy. Our super giant leopard gecko has always been very calm , but is not as fun as the BTS . Our uromastyx is still too young , he is skittish since he is small. I will say lizards , the all have different personalities . One thing though when our beardie does pass, not getting another . I cant deal with the poop ......... Uro's are the easiest when is comes to that , they have little dry turds lol.

I got a female blue tongue skink over the summer. She's a December captive born from a breeder out of Florida. She has been fun and can't get over that BTS eat dog food with veggies. As for squirmy BTS, some are like that but it differs from one to the next. The nails bit when handling, quick solve is a rock for them to file on with the nails while climbing over to spots in the enclosure. I have also seen videos of people filing them. The other thing I can say is that BTS can get very picky on whom they let around them if not socialized.

i live in australia and i have a eastern bluey! i noticed in the comments a lot of people talk about difficulty with handling, i got a baby for that exact reason, and he's gotten used to handling very quickly and is quite comfortable with me. he's also super small so it's exciting to watch him grow into a big chonky boi. one difficulty i have actually had with him is diet. the breeder i got him from tweezer fed him, and i have a lot of trouble feeding him any other way. he also isn't very inclined to eat vegetables, at the moment he pretty much just eats mealworms (i breed them) and banana. i'm going to try with some dog food and hopefully he'll eat it and i won't have to worry to much him not getting enough nutrition or variety.
i'm actually really glad that australia doesn't import or export reptiles, we also aren't allowed to wild catch, which is great because we have less animals dying in captivity and it also raises the prices of our animals a bit which means we don't have as many inexperienced keepers buying them.

We decided it would be better than the reptile store because the reptile store had... very poor care, it looked like. Very filthy enclosures, and dried up food. And it wasnt just the one times but multiple times after we saw this. And, when we went (as we were originally going to buy from there), he’d upped the price from $75 to like $110

I've got an indonesian that's impossible to hold. She's a rescue who was neglected really bad for the first 1 1/2 years of her life, she's missing some toes and her tail is crooked (probably from living with low humidity and being in a 20 gallon). She's now living in a large, bio active tank and is eating good food. :)

My vote is for blue tongues. I have friends that have beardies and have handled them a bit. I've had my Halmehera by a for six years now and he is an absolute sweat heart. Got him as a baby, he was may be an inch longer then my adult leopard gecko (22 years). My blue tongue has never hissed or done a tongue display. And my niece and nephew both absolutely love him they are almost 3 now. Indonesians might be a bit harder to keep because of the humidity. But around here (Chicago suburbs) I can find australians anywhere.

What about bearded dragon vs clown/painted agama?
I think I'd have a bit of a hard choice between the two. I just love how the BTS skink looks and what a tank they are. But beardies seem so chill. I'd want to interact with each one before I chose, not that I really need either lol.

I live in Australia, in Central Victoria, and we have Eastern Bluetongues running around everywhere. I've seen three different ones just this spring alone! And here's the kicker - I've handled all three of them! The Easterns in particular are super chill even in the wild (unless you have cats or dogs or any other predator animals to give them a reason to be more defensive). And even when they get hissy at you, they are still very unlikely to bite. Only once has one of my garden buddies bitten me, and that wasn't more than a slight 'nip' that only occured because I had food on my finger (so he wasn't actually biting ME).
Easterns are much harder to get over in the US and Canada, and those that are available are more expensive as a result, but of all the BTS species, they are the one I would most recommend.

I love the blue tongue skink my breeder has and I have a beardie as well as a couple snakes and a leopard gecko.
Skinks vs beardie? Beardie. While I love the skink and taking him out, the fact is? Not much in personality which beardies have hands down.
Beardies are fun and interact. Skinks? Hard to tell if there is a thought passing thru. My beardie loves to play video games w the kids, go on walks, loves going to breeders shop - I think it’s because he smells good everywhere w crickets in one area and roaches in another, plus sll the frogs etc… he acts so excited it’s like taking a food addict to an all you can eat buffet.
Jeb cuddles, he plays, and has moods. He runs which makes me laugh every time and shakes his boogie to poop, gives me looks if I feed wrong bug. So yes, easy of owning and caring for a skink maybe be cheaper. Beardies are expensive - especially as babies. Roaches 3 x a day while growing snd he ate 40-60 Roaches per meal- - his good cost was 2x that of our mastiff! . No points for being cheaper initially because $400 skink = $75-100 beardie + cages+ food+ +
You have to figure beardies may be less to purchase but the cost will be the same as a skink in first month. Yes a point to skink for being cheaper to feed and house but you get what you pay for and beardies get 3 pets for personality.
