Jack Gohlke finished with 10 threes in the game and this is Kentucky's second first-round exit in three years. Colin Cowherd sounds off on John Calipari, explaining why he must change his ways or Kentucky must move on. Bucky Brooks shared 2024 QB prospect comparisons, notably, J.J. McCarthy with Alex Smith. I've been saying for years that Calipari is an elite recruiter, accomplished glad-hander, yet mediocre coach. Oakland's coach thoroughly outcoached him the entire game. It was a clinic.

No he didn’t outcoach. Kentucky played one of their worst games of the season and was still in the game. That loss had nothing to do with in game coaching. It was season long coaching. We are talking the most basic of basketball principals like staying on a Shooters hip between the runner and the ball. Like not coming off the shooter late in shot clock. Like not sticking to the screener so the runner can’t curl. These are high school concepts. So no he didnt get out coached that game. He just didn’t bother coaching the entire season. Which is even worse.

I’m glad Colin went in. Calipari has ridden the coattails of that 2012 title and no-one seems to call him out on it. Kentucky wasn’t a threat to win it all this year but I don’t even think Oakland thought they would win that game until they did.

One NBA mock draft had 5 Kentucky players being drafted. With the current “one and done” system we have, it must be hard to teach an 18 year old how to play defense, and get them to play together as a team - in just the 7 months between September and March - especially since they’re McDonald’s All Americans, who’ve done nothing but jack up shots in AAU games, since they were 12 or 13 years old. (Not to mention, they know they’re going to be rich on draft day.) The system just doesn’t produce the kind of polished 3 and 4 year college players that Michael Jordan at UNC, Patrick Ewing at Georgetown, and Larry Bird at Indiana State were. I wouldn’t say it’s an “unfair” comparison - because the system is what it is, and it’d be crazy to ask 19 year olds to turn down millions of dollars…especially since none of us would have, if we were in that position. But it is an “invalid” comparison, to compare the kids on this losing Kentucky team, to players from past eras who’d had 3, 4, or 5 YEARS of coaching, from Dean Smith, Roy Williams, Coach K, John Thompson, Bill Self, or Bobby Knight. In terms of a group of 18 year olds handling the pressure of March Madness - I can only think of Michigan’s “Fab Five” that ever did it. So maybe it’s true, that the game has passed John Calipari by. I don’t watch enough Kentucky games to have an opinion on that. But I would say, that it’s unrealistic to expect him to do every single year - i.e., to take a team loaded with freshman talent to the Final Four - what all the other coaches in college basketball history, combined, have only managed to do once. Maybe we need to give more credit, to what those Michigan coaches and players accomplished.
The other side of that coin would be to not rely on one-and-dones, but instead build a championship quality team. Fair take IMO

I’m the biggest Michigan fan!! I’ve watched every game basically since birth and I can honestly say that JJ is missing something. He’s got a lot of talent and arm strength but just doesn’t have that razzle dazzle and is imo a little soft at taking hits. Hope the best for him!

Coming from a lifelong Vikings fan! JJ will be the steal of the draft if we land em. I’ll be so happy! I’m just as confident in McCarthy as I was in Anthony Edwards coming out of college. I’d rather have him over Maye, Williams, Bo Nix. The only other quarterback I’d want is Jaden from LSU. JJ is 220 with a cannon arm and extremely accurate with the most confidence and humble. Perfect combo. Williams is entitled and cocky and lazy and will not be anywhere as close as good. Some players, you can see right through them, and you can tell their love of the game. Others you can tell they just care about the money and fame. Intentions paired with elite talent determine the outcome, also their personality.
Maye will be the best qb of the class. As long as he can sit a year somewhere and develop

Another Michigan fan and disagree. He had everything to be a star. Great head, can make every throw, will take chances, and mobile. He does need a year or 2 of refinement. And while I don't think "game manager" is the pejorative some people take it as, in 5 years, JJ will be much more than that.

It’s changing because just because you are Kentucky or Duke does not mean you are getting the best players anymore. Money is going to be the main factor for these kids. Some coaches can’t or will not adapt. But yeah another flameout by Kentucky.

Cal was never a great coach. The one ring he got had the most stacked team in history. The he lost with the 2nd most stacked team to Wisconsin. He had 5 first round NBA picks and lost to a weaker team.

He led the country in multiple categories despite being in the most unfriendly QB offense out of all the top QBs. He runs a 4.5 and has one of the strongest arms in the draft. And he was only 20 years old this past season. He's got a lot of time to get better.

Those who say Cal is a great recruiter and a lousy basketball coach have always been right. The window on one and done closed as the NCAA rules changed. To make matters worse for Kentucky fans (my wife is a Kentucky alum), Cal may be the most stubborn coach in the whole of the NCAA. There is no chance he will change course and surround himself with young talented assistants to close the coaching skills gap he represents at Kentucky. Kentucky is in a really big pickle.

How? A 3-team trade and fook the competitive advantage of having a rookie QB than building a roster to support the QB, go for the damm Super Bowl you have a improve Defense and top offensive weapons and two top tier tackles. Just need some work on the interior O-Line.

3. Vikes use #11, #23, #27 trade for Herbert, Vikes and Chargers split the $50 million bonus cost
Arizona getting JJ by trading two 1st and one 2nd rounder for JJ, that’s a deal.
Jim Harbaurgh gets #11, #23, and #27 to build his roster PLUS Chargers STILL have their #5 pick and likely will land McCarthy.
Vikes don’t have to spend money on a WR but instead use that money they were going to spend for JJ on Herbert, re-structure Herbert’s contract.

1st round draft is a crapshoot, a lot of bust. Vikes to need to get a sure QB in Herbert and risk drafting WR Marvin.
Implications of a QB not working out had more of a detrimental effect on the team than a WR. Plus, spending $35 million plus per year on a proven QB is $ better spent than on a WR.
