  • In early 2020, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) realized that the COVID-19 pandemic would have an impact on the state’s oyster growers. The state and federal agencies saw an opportunity to help both the growers and the environment by obtaining reproductively mature oysters to restore dwindling oyster populations in the Ocean State.

Cool video Steve, I knew you'd thrive! Sad thing is, he'll probably never see this unless someone shows him!

Ive been coming to rhode island since I was 8 years old (im in my 30's now). Clamming has been a family tradition and my parents have replaced the grandparents in our clamming party. RI was (and somewhat still is ) the poor mans Cape Cod (in the best way). we could at one time, haul coolers full of cherrystones and have clam bakes with friends and extended family. Matunuk oyster bar was just a shack when I first arrived. We still go to buck a shuck but its changed, the porsche's and ferraris are here now, the access is dwindling, along with the ocean views. the small cottages are replaced by 4 story beach houses. Oysters are cool, they filter the water, but so do the property owners.

Excellent project. I hope it’s highly successful & that it’s copied by all the nearby states.
Btw, before the pandemic, we too a trip to RI & ate a couple of times at the restaurant shown as a participant in the project. Their oysters were wonderful, & once all the COVID variants are done, we look forward to returning to that same restaurant.
