Single Mature Oyster Restoration in Rhode Island
zhlédnutí 4,6KPřed 3 lety
In early 2020, the Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management and the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) realized that the COVID-19 pandemic would have an impact on the state’s oyster growers. The state and federal agencies saw an opportunity to help both the growers and the environment by obtaining reproductively mature oysters to restore dwindling oyster populations i...
Slash Wall: Cutting edge forestry practice comes to Rhode Island
zhlédnutí 857Před 3 lety
Tucked away in the rural community of Foster, Rhode Island, is a patch of forest dedicated to conservation education. The Rhode Island Forest Conservators Organization, better known as RIFCO, maintains a demonstration woodlot where private landowners can see tried-and-true forest management practices at work. RIFCO’s most recent project, you might say, is more cutting edge. Around a three-acre ...
Wetlands and Forest for Wildlife Forever | E. Patrick and Diane Luther, Glocester, Rhode Island

When Patrick and Diane Luther purchased 38 acres of Glocester, Rhode Island woodland, it was with the intention of developing house lots for their family. Jobs and school took their kids down other roads, however, so when the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service contacted them about protecting the land with a conservation easement, they were very interested. With its large herd of Belted Galloway cattle often seen grazing in the shadow of the Newport Bridge, Windmist Farm is perhaps the most visible of Jamestown, Rhode Island farms. The town sits on Conanicut Island in Narragansett Bay, a stepping stone for tourists on the way to nearby Newport. Martha Neale operates Windmist Farm with her husband George, raising beef cattle, goats, sheep, pastured...
Bringing Oysters Back to Bissel Cove | North Kingstown, Rhode Island
zhlédnutí 1KPřed 5 lety
The fact that natural communities of oysters have been rapidly declining in Rhode Island waters isn’t just a concern for those who enjoy eating shellfish. Oysters fill a special ecological niche and help filter the water, keeping it clean. To reverse the effects of over-fishing and habitat change, the USDA Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) is working with the Rhode Island Department...

Excellent project. I hope it’s highly successful & that it’s copied by all the nearby states. Btw, before the pandemic, we too a trip to RI & ate a couple of times at the restaurant shown as a participant in the project. Their oysters were wonderful, & once all the COVID variants are done, we look forward to returning to that same restaurant.

Ive been coming to rhode island since I was 8 years old (im in my 30's now). Clamming has been a family tradition and my parents have replaced the grandparents in our clamming party. RI was (and somewhat still is ) the poor mans Cape Cod (in the best way). we could at one time, haul coolers full of cherrystones and have clam bakes with friends and extended family. Matunuk oyster bar was just a shack when I first arrived. We still go to buck a shuck but its changed, the porsche's and ferraris are here now, the access is dwindling, along with the ocean views. the small cottages are replaced by 4 story beach houses. Oysters are cool, they filter the water, but so do the property owners.
