The only issue with cotton balls is that they evaporate quicker than Rockwall so you need to top off sooner, and more often.

I don't do Hydroponics, (partly because of the cost) but it does fascinate me. I really enjoyed this video--it's amazing what people can do if they just spend some time thinking about the problem like you have. Thanks for the video.

It doesn't have to cost much at all. In fact you don't even need electricity to do some types. Look up Kratky. That's what I'm getting started doing this year. It doesn't require aeration or any pumps so it's the most economical. And it's great for spinach, greens, strawberries, tomatoes, squash, and all that. You can even grow broccoli with this method although I'm going to make one ebb and flow system for broccoli.

Thank you, not sure why you didn't start them in the cotton, I hear that works well...

Yeah I started planting from seeds after letting some lettuce Planck bolt. It works very well that way.

Can you start your seeds that way? I mean, not using potting mix at all - just cotton?

That's how I start my seeds. I also use the wet paper towel method and then transplant them to cotton wool

Yes you can. This would help not to damage the roots or stem when transplanting.
