    When sanding on a flat surface use a figure 8 pattern while rotating the piece. This will result in a flatter piece. In Aerospace we used this method for hand lapping face seals that needed to be flat enough to not allow liquid to pass through while running in a pump. Hope this helps, I enjoy watching your videos

    Hi Randy! Question for you. I'm in the process of making a simple gold band, but the little nugget I get after pouring the gold into my ingot mold seems to be too thick for my rolling mill (Lion Gold Smith). When I go to hammer it down a touch so that it can better pass through (I do this for silver projects all the time!), the little gold bar cracks on the edges and eventually splits. Do you have any suggestions for this? I've melted & repoured three or four times now! Thank you!

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  Před 3 lety +2

      Get or make a thinner ingot mold. I took mine to a machine shop and had them cut it down and it works with my mill that doesn't open as much.

  • @Howie875
    @Howie875 Před 3 lety +1

    Hi Randy. I always find all of your video's fascinating. I do have a couple of question. I plan on doing some lost wax casting and i understand that normally the mold is spun in a centrifugal device for proper casting. I noticed you did not have to do this for this casting. Is that because the metal retains the heat and the investment casting allows the metal to cool much faster and not flow as well? Also in my background as an AC technician we would use silver solder (with flux) to join dissimilar metals like brass, copper and steel together with much higher strength that plumbing solder. What keeps the molten gold or silver from sticking to the inside of the steel mold? My guess is the metal gets hot, but not hot enough to combine with the molten silver or gold? Take care.

    • @GomeowCreations
      @GomeowCreations  Před 3 lety +1

      So then making simple shapes you can just pour the metal into something like a ingot mold. It is a steel mold but I also use an oil on the inside of it so the metal will not get stuck to the steel. Also you don't have to spin something to cast stuff. I did a tufa casting video that you just pour your meeting into the carved out stone. I'm also working on a video right now about sand casting at is done in a similar way.
      You can also do lost wax casting with a vacuum system to get some really detailed stuff done.

    So, how do you get the gold off of the sandpaper? Or do you turn in the sandpaper w/ the gold? Anyway, what a lucky couple! The rings turned out beautiful. Also, it must have been fun for them to watch the process of their wedding bands being made. Not many people get to see that. I would think it makes them appreciate their bands and what they represent even more.

    This is a poor way to solder rings it puts a HUGE amount of stress on the join the best was it to add a little extra length (especially on thicker bands like this) and then have them meet at a slight angle and saw until flush then solder this way you start the ring in more of a circle shape than an oval and also makes it a little easier
