How the NRA hijacks gun control debates

  • Why is the NRA -- a group that represents the interests of gun manufacturers -- taken seriously in debates about reducing gun violence?

After the mass shooting at a high school in Parkland, Florida, news networks are once again focused on the debate over gun control. These debates often pit gun control activists against the National Rifle Association (NRA), which claims to speak on behalf of gun owners. But in reality, the NRA represents the interest of gun manufacturers.
The group gets millions of dollars in donations from gun companies every year, and millions more through the sale of ad space in NRA publications. That financial allegiance means the NRA is similar to organizations like the Tobacco Institute -- an industry lobbying group primarily interested in protecting their product.
So why do news networks keep inviting them to debate gun violence?

Its fairly recently an American past time. We used to have gun safety lessons in school & bring rifles to play with after we got out. No one ever got shot. If kids fought, they didn't even think to grab their guns, they duked it out. The media & music glorifies gangs, shooting each other & other illegal things.. until someone or a bunch of someones actually gets shot. Then they cry for gun control, when all mass shootings except for one took place in a gun free zone. Columbine happened during the Clinton era "assault" weapons ban with banned firearms in a school where guns were not allowed on the premises. You can draw whatever conclusion you'd like to about that

I don’t know why gun enthusiasts get so caught up with assault rifles. They’re overrated and incredibly overpriced. Handguns and shotguns are more than enough for home defense and personal defense. And there numerous hunting rifles that are much much more practical for hunting than assault rifles.
I owned an assault rifle when I was in the military (active duty). I felt I wasn’t shooting enough on the army’s dime so I bought an AR-15 to shoot on my own time, which was great. Once I shot on my own time, I scored expert 40/40 nearly everytime.
Once I got out of the army, I sold my assault rifle to to a gun store a year later. I had no use for it anymore. I still buy guns but just handguns and shotguns. There just is no real reason for AR-15s to be a commercially sold firearm. It should be supplied to law enforcement and military only (well, not ARs but M-4s)

It isn't a bunch of people buying guns because they want to emulate mass shootings. Anyone who thinks that normal gun owners of America are okay with mass shootings lives in a fantasy world. But people will be damned if they try to take stuff away. Think of it like this, the right to bear arms is a civil right and a constitutional right. It's also one of the only rights that is constantly under assault and being further and further pushed back and infringed. I think all these shootings are unacceptable. Hell, I don't even own a single gun myself. But I honestly believe that attacking the guns themselves is a lost cause. There's just TOO MANY of them out there already. And you can easily melt some aluminum cans and making a functioning receiver with the right equipment. Bam, aluminum AR-15. So honestly, we just need to tackle the root of the problem and not one of the symptoms. Because you can easily take a car and run over people as we've seen, make bombs as we've seen, and so much more. We're having the wrong debate.

A key point is the 'right equipment' part. The vast majority of gun deaths are not products of careful planning and expensive resources, they are usually impulsive actions using whatever is easily available. That ease of access is a big part of the problem, it means it is much easier for situations to escalate. Shooting someone is much, MUCH easier than using something like a knife or an improvised weapon like a car, and building a gun from scratch is the realm of only the most dedicated people, people even less likely to actually use the thing.

The power of the sword, say the minority..., is in the hands of Congress. My friends and countrymen, it is not so, for The powers of the sword are in the hands of the yeomanry of America from sixteen to sixty. The militia of these free commonwealths, entitled and accustomed to their arms, when compared with any possible army, must be tremendous and irresistible. Who are the militia? Are they not ourselves? Is it feared, then, that we shall turn our arms each man against his own bosom. Congress has no power to disarm the militia. Their swords and every terrible implement of the soldier are the birthright of Americans.

And also, Thomas Jefferson advocated that the Constitution should be changed every 19 years, because he believed that as America changes, the laws must adopt to the new changes of the country.
And also fun fact: when the University of Virginia opened in 1824, it prohibited firearms to be used and bought into the campuses. And two founding fathers made that prohibition, now who were those founding fathers?, Thomas Jefferson and James Madison. The authors of the Second Amendment

Again, there was no law at the time preventing people that age from owning guns. A rule at a college is not law. Dixie Normas
Out of 100 mass shooters maybe 10 could build a bomb. Out of the 10 maybe 1 could make a chemical weapon. When you factor in the fact that mass shootings are deadlier than bombs, which are deadlier than chemicals, I would rather there be 1 chemical attack with 2 deaths than 100 mass shootings with 20 deaths each.
The point of law is to reduce, not completely prevent. No law is 100% effective. Coconuts kill more people than sharks each year, but do we tear down the shark nets at beaches? Not everyone can build a bomb or chemical weapon, but in the current state, anyone can very easily get a gun. The point of laws is to reduce that number. And if it doesn't completely prevent it? That's still good enough. Again, no law is 100% effective. Drug laws aren't 100% effective, we see overdoses all over the country, but we still have them. Because without them there would be even more. And less is good enough.
Just because we can stop all deaths, doesn't mean we shouldn't stop the ones we can.

Ask yourself what resulted from the murders at Ulvade, who benefited from the murders? Look at the big picture and use your common sense, look at the murderer and his circumstances. Why was Kyle Rittenhouse prosecuted? Why do the politiians want to disarm the folks who never broke a law, by passing a bill that allows the government to take away the arms of law abiding citizens and ignoring due process? My dad was a Sargent in charge of a gun squad in WW2 under Patton. He was an extreme marksman and fought from Normandy through the Hedge row country and all the way to Bastogne. I've never seen anyone more experienced with firearms . He was requested to train snipers and SWAT teams after he got back which he turned down. Dad wasn't fanatical about firearms ,but firearms seem to be everything he was interested in ,and his knowledge of firearms was as good as his shooting skills. Sad to say but he probably was a very good killer. When he was promoted to a Sargent he was given a Thompson, pretty much the same as the AK types or the Auto Killing guns . He turned it down. He had clearance to shoot at any police ranges with no reservations. His shooting skills astonished anyone around him and especially the police. He squirrel hunted with a revolver and I never saw him miss . One time leaving a police range an officer followed him out and asked him if he was joined up or with the NRA . Dad just replied "No". The officer said " Hank with your skills why wouldn't you join" Dad just dropped his head and "No I'm not interested in the NRA " ,and we walked away. I was only about 7 years old and I never questioned his opinions about firearms , but I wish I knew the answer or the reason why . I've never joined or will ever join the NRA , but what I know for myself I wouldn't and maybe I know his answer.

Vox also reports about important issues such as climate change, while many other news outlets don’t mention it or even deny it, and exist purley to mock, and agrivate people on the left side of the political spectrum. No political leaning is “better” but I find that these days, religion, climate change, and even basic things like equal rights for LGBTQ people, is split between the right and the left. The organizations are similar in that they both seek to protect their product, but besides that I don't think they have much in common. That being said, I don't agree 100% with the NRA, and I think that gun owners of America does a much better job at protecting gun rights not just gun manufacturers

I'd like to express the extreme importance of gun control to its opponents: sacrificing someone's 'right to bear arms' is a very small price to pay if that person is a danger to the lives of others. I have heard the argument that if that's the case, cars might as well be regulated, but the purpose of a car isn't for it to be weaponized, unlike a gun. There's also the fact that regulating guns leads to less guns which leads to less gun violence which leads to less mass shootings which leads to less killings.
