Making your own watercolor paint is a fun, simple, and rewarding process, the first step is to make the binder which combines with your pigment to create a paint that will dry and stay on your paper without rubbing off.
⌛ ** NOTE: This binder is best if left to homogenize and settle down overnight - so be prepared to wait this time before actually using it to make your paint.**

I laughed at the "manage your expectations" from editing Jannah. It got me good 😂
🤣 I know right, I just hate starting a project and then realizing it is not going to be usable or ready when I thought it would. I didn’t want people to be let down 🤓
Fascinating and very, very useful! I sometimes grind ochres collected from the environment and will try your method for binding in the near future. Cheers Jannah 👍
Heeeee, thanks dad 💕 Love that I could show you something useful! I have seen a lot of artists making gathered pigment paints, I would love to see you create some, they would be amazing in your work!
Thank you that was great Ill try it
Thank you for this video and recipe!❤
So glad you are going to give it a try :)
Ty
Thank you for this clear instruction video. Although I use regular premade watercolors, I still have about a kilo of genuine manganese blue pigment (PB33) which is no longer made. I'll go try to make it into a usable watercolor using your instructions.
Glad it was helpful - you will get the best result by using a glass muller for pigment paints - let me now how it turns out, I have not mixed a paint with PB33 yet :)
@@jannahlyon A bit late but I'm still waiting for the glass muller I've ordered weeks ago. I have one but I use that one for oil paints and I don't think it's a good idea to have some possible traces of oils in my water colors (made a lot of my own oil paints but never water colors).
I must admit that when I was shopping for the ingredients I found ready made binder (of Schmincke) and today I got so bored waiting for the muller that I've used my painting knives to make the paint. Some pigments are easy to turn into oil paint (Ultramarine for example), others are hard even with a muller (Cerulean for example).
Manganese Blue proved to be easy to turn into water color paint. I've done it the way I do my oil paints working on a sheet of glass. First making a quite fluid paint and adding more pigment gradually till it became hard to work it. The bottle said to have 2 parts binder to 1 part pigment but in the end I had it the other way around. With oil paints you'd want as little medium as you can get away with and this is how I made it. I think I worked it for about half an hour yielding 2 or 3 half pans in volume.
I tested it and compared it to Kimberly Crick Art's video of genuine Manganese Blue she got from Prodigal Sons (a small manufacturer of water colors). Mine looked and worked the same as the one she demonstrated and the paint doesn't rub off the paper so I guess it was a success.
Thanks again for your video even though I "chickened out" and used ready made binder. It's been some years since I was in the business of making my own oil paints (work got in the way) and it didn't really occur to me to make my own water colors but now I know it's not harder than making oil paints.
Hey guys! Here is a quick and easy tutorial on how to make a watercolor paint binder so that you can make your own watercolor paints. This recipe makes quite a small batch and works great for metallic micas, but feel free to experiment if it does not perform the way you wish - I sometimes reduce the amount of glycerin and honey for different pigments, depending on the results (too shiny or sticky)

➤ NEXT VIDEO TUTE - How To Make Metallic Watercolor Paint: czcams.com/video/suNJS6C8OTk/video.html
Hi! Thank you so much for this video! I want to make some water-colour paints so this is super helpful. I do have one question, if I have gum arabic but in liquid form would it function the same to make the binder? Because I can't seem to find many recipes with it in liquid form so I just want to make sure if the only way is to make them with powder gum arabic or if I can use the liquid.
I would think you can totally use the liquid Gum Arabic if the ingredients are just water and Gum Arabic powder - that is what we are creating in the tutorial! You would just want to add your pigment or mica to it and if it does not contain honey or glycerin you can experiment with adding them too to get your desired consistency. A lot of paint makers add the honey and or glycerin during the mulling/ mixing stage, I just think it is easier having it all mixed up from the start.
Great tutorial! I really wish there was a measurement in ML rather than gms. Some scales have both and tutorials will display both just in case people like me don't have kitchen scales. Thank you so much for the recipe!
I am pretty sure that had I put alternatives in the description, but let me know if there is something missing.
Not sure you can answer this, but can gum arabic be substituted with guar gum? I have both, but thinking of using up the guar. Any thoughts on this?
Hmm, I don’t think so. Gum Arabic is the sap from the Acacia tree whereas the Guar Gum is from beans I believe, so they are pretty different things and I doubt the Guar Gum would have the same binding and preserving properties as sap.
If I want to store my paint in a jar or a tube, what do I have to put in the binder so that it won’t mold?
I don't know of any 100% natural guarantees that you paint wont mold - but even some professionally made watercolors just use the honey and / or clove oil as an antibacterial / preserver, both of which are in my binder recipe :)
when you add your pigments dose to become shelf stable or will it mold???
The clove oil and honey additions to the binder should help with keeping your paints from molding - obviously, they are going to get wet every time you use them, but letting them airdry and storing them out of humidity should be fine. A lot of professionally manufactured watercolor paints are also made with these same ingredients, it is mostly about the storage circumstance and the climate you live in :)
I can use this binder on acrylic colors or pigment powder also?
You can probably use it with most pigments out there, but it is not an acrylic base, which means the paint will always be activated again with water; acrylic base paints are waterproof after dying :)
Hi how much oil of clove did you add and if l were to add Ox Gall how much of that would l add ty Cheers Kerry 😊☺️
Hey Kerry, for this amount of binder I put in 1-2 drops of oil. For the Ox Gall, it just depends on the flow you want, I usually put in one drop when I mix up a full pan's worth of paint. It goes a long way. You can also just add it to your water when painting to aid in flow.
Thank You So Much Cheers Kerry ☺️☺️
Have you ever tried Floetrol in your recipe? I have a bottle of it and was wondering if it can be used?
nope, I have not heard of it ... googling ... hmm, seems like it is more for acrylic mediums so it could possibly interfere with the rewetting or water solubility of a watercolor paint when dry - but I am not really sure what is in it so I am not sure :)
@@jannahlyon It’s used in paint pouring. It makes the paint flow smoothly.
hello! do we NEED glycerin for it to form?
No, but it will make it rewet better, which means the paint will be softer and easier to use. You only NEED the Gum Arabic, pigment and distilled water.
Can i use gum Arabic solution instead
If it is just a solution of gum Arabic and water you should be good to go! You can just use it as is, or add in a drop of clove oil and / or honey to help as a preserver and humectant :) There definitely are premade gum Arabic paint binders out there that you can just mix with your pigment or mica, so it may be one of those :)
This liquid what purpose. Use ?
It is the base for making watercolor and gouache. You mix it with pigment and or mica to make paint.
may I know the approximate cups of gum arabic & distilled water?
Hi, measurements are in the description - I did not measure in cups only grams.
What do I do if my mixture is way too thick? Also seems to be cloudy still. But it’s been in the fridge overnight
Hmm, I have not run into this issue, sorry - did you use 100% pure gum arabic powder and distilled water? Was the honey a more solid raw honey or clear?
Thank you for your response! The mixture wound up being fine, it was just pretty thick when I just took it out of the fridge.. I’m also still really new to this and didn’t realize the consistency would just be thicker than I expected.. combo of the two made me nervous lol..
Thank you for your video! I just started making watercolors and I’m in love! I have depression and fell out of a lot of my hobbies/passions, but now I have a new one! I’m going to make Christmas cards with water color and I make new colors every chance I get.. your video helped a lot ❤
I also now realize that I believe I might’ve not added the right amount of water on accident the first batch; just made a new one with the same ingredients and it’s the consistency shown.. luckily first batch still seems to work! Just a lot stickier and thicker
@@celestegalloway6840 yeah should work just fine, you can always add a little more distilled water when you are mulling too, some pigment will require more or less :). Nice work!
Why dont you microwave it for mixing make it melt and blend
I tried and it doesn't really speed up the process of dissolving it any better surprisingly, it still stays kinda goopy - also I believe that extended or excessive heat can reduce the binding properties :) Also, for the ingredients to really meld just leaving it in the fridge overnight works the best, it just takes some time and you will have a better binder by letting it mingle longer :)
@@jannahlyon thanks lots
It is ok if theres no honey?
Yes, you can try it without honey, but it helps make your paints easier to hydrate. Your paint will still be paint it just won’t be as easy to work with. It also has antimicrobial properties, so it helps keep bacteria from growing in your paints in humid environments.
I’ve been trying to learn this and I am using xanthamgum instead of gum Arabic and it doesn’t seem to be the right consistency.. help:)?
Yes, you must use Gum Arabic, it is a completely different substance to Xantham Gum. Gum Arabic is a tree sap so it has binding qualities that help to make the paint, Xantham Gum just won’t work as a binder. Sorry.
@@jannahlyon you are amazing thank you so much
@@jannahlyon also I had a question about the difference in making gouache and watercolor.. is the only difference some chalk? Could I use cornstarch in that case? Just curious.. I have chalk I am just curious as to how they vary. I trust your research much more than my own 😹
@@jannahlyon thank you for answering my question so fast too
@@kayleeyates27 I would not use cornstarch as it is different from the chalk used for making gouache, you should use calcium carbonate (chalk) to mix with the watercolor binder and pigment/mica :)
Hi i have a question can u help me? I try this steps but my watercolor don’t dry! I don’t know why? Can u tell me its from what? Honey? Arabic gum? Glycerin? Help me plsss
After you paint with them on paper, or when they in the pans?
@@jannahlyon before painting, after making them they don’t get dry and they are still a little bit wet🥲🥲🥲 I don’t know what is wrong
@@nehyun If they are just a little tacky that is ok, some paints won't dry completely, especially in places of high humidity or certain weather. If they are still runny however then you will probably want to add more of the pigment to the mix - each pigment acts differently some might need more to make a good mix. If they are not runny when set but are really sticky you may want to leave out the honey and see if that helps. Sorry, it is not an exact science, it does take some experimenting - I would suggest making some really small batches to try out what works 💕
oh, also, some can take weeks to completely dry too, it does take a long time for some mixes, especially if you do thick layers!
I live in FL, honey would attract ants, I know it sounds funny but wondering if it is an issue
Hmm interesting point! We have a lot of ants visit our house if we leave the honey out too but I have never had them seek out my watercolors or binder - I wonder if the other ingredients (gum Arabic, clove oil, or the pigment) act as deterrents? I also keep the binder in the fridge so I am guessing that would also keep them away.
I have found that flies are attracted to my honey based paint. It can be an issue yes.
Interesting! 🪰
I feel cheated! I just made my binder and didn't have any lumps. I'm sure i must have done something wrong🤣.
Leaving it until tomorrow in the fridge but every video I've seen they have had lumps. I was expecting lumps and i got two tiny ones that disappeared within seconds of stirring. Very odd!
Haaa, I think you are just a master at this 😂 I definitely would not worry that you did it wrong as long as you used pure Gum Arabic / acacia fiber and distilled water :) Yay!
@@jannahlyon I did. I added 3 drops of ox gall before adding the powder so assumed that is what made the difference.
