LAW VS MEDICINE | Why I chose medicine

  • Hi everyone! In this video I compare law school vs med/np/pa school! This video is created through my personal opinion and reason of why I realized law school wasn't for me, and how I discovered that medicine would be more fulfilling! I went to college with the intent of wanting to go to law school, however, after studying my minor (global health) I realized that I want to pursue the medical path. I do think law is an amazing and lucrative career choice, however, it is just not for me!

Yes, medicine over law. You can save lives instead of pushing paper and fighting over money. I say this as a lawyer who comes from a family of doctors and nurses. Good luck to you!

I beg to differ. Lawyers don’t have to fight over money. There are many different types of lawyers. My sister works at the ACLU and it’s been amazing for her in terms of helping people, you also don’t have money on your conscience because, at least in the US, you are helping people but you may also be making them broke in the process because of the terrible health insurance, whereas, because she’s a lawyer for the ACLU, her cases are pro Bono and she doesn’t have to have any guilt about making people broke because they needed help.

@@amaltaher2717 that's great! I used to be on the board of the ACLU in my state, so I know about the types of cases the ACLU attorneys handle. However, those types of public interest lawyer jobs are extremely competitive-- we'd get hundreds of applicants for one position, and the pay isn't that great either. Since I handle divorce, child support, employment, & other litigation cases, everyday I'm fighting over money, whether for my clients or for myself, when they clients don't pay their bills. Your sister must be a top-notch, amazing attorney to get such a great job. Best wishes to both of you.

@@aalegalfocus she is, and I know they are competitive, but that actually motivated her, because she knew that she had to be the best at her field. Competition isn’t always a bad thing and as for pay, she never really cared as long as she had enough to live on wherever she worked and she makes 120k so she does. My parents had 6 kids on a 80 k take home pay and as kids we were completely fine money wise so for her not even having kids yet, 120 k is more than enough.

I’m in law school right now. If you’re interested in law, get a legal internship to see what it’s really about. If you want to change the world or deeply care about social issues, legal field probably isn’t for you. If you have depression or stress induced anxiety, law is probably not for you. Law schools are degree farms, and you are only as good as your experience. I’m looking at $300,000 in debt for law school and I am not at a top school. Don’t go unless you are at an accredited school and have a good scholarship.

I think you can be a lawyer and deeply care about social issues and help people. My sister is a lawyer for the ACLU and that’s precisely the reason she chose law. How it works in the USA, you may get to help people but because of the terrible health insurance, half a million families go in debt from medical expenses. At the ACLU, her cases are pro Bono. If you deeply care about social issues, the legal field can be for you, as long as it’s not corporate law.

I did this in my semester, I tried Legal studies and dropped medical studies because I already experience subjects in my high school within medical field. This year as a junior I tried anything with law and easy subjects to see how it goes and what I am comfortable with. Hope this helps!

I am incoming senior high school student (Grade 11).
In Grade 11 & 12 in the Philippines, we choose a strand that would focus on the subjects of the course that we want for college. Example of the strands are: STEM - Science Technology Engineering Mathematics, HUMMS - Humanities and Social Sciences, ABM - Accounting and Business Management, and lastly, Health Allied.
I know that I am I still a grade 10 student but I really want to be sure on which strand to take for grade 11 and 12 so that the strand I take would be related to what course i am planning to take in college. This video helped me a lot, Thank you for sharing!! This was like the only video I saw about Law vs. Medicine. I will still try to make sure if I really want medicine or law.

I came to all these realizations that you did about law, and I worked at 2 firms and found the connections in the work environment are meaningless. I liked the study of it and intellectual stimulation, but the actual job just feels and looks depressing.

Thank you for the video. Just wanted to say that technically the starting salary for medical school graduates who are required to complete at least 3 (usually more) years of residency in order to practice, make on average 50K per year, after going through 4 years of medical school. And most residents work at least 60-80 hrs with 24-36 hour shifts depending on the monthly block rotations.

Do not go to medical school if you want to be a lawyer. And do not go to law school if you want to be a doctor. These professions are very different. If you do the internal work about who you are and what you have to offer the world, then the law versus medicine issue won't even be a question. Don't pick professions out of a cookie jar.
