"Indexi" by Indexi - A Yugoslavian Classic Rock Masterpiece

- Prog/Psychedelic/Indescribable Rock music from the Bosnian part of Yugoslavia. Come on a journey with me as I first talk a bit about why Bosnia is such an interesting place to visit* and then rock out with me as I explain this great album.
*fair warning: the first 20 or so minutes discuss the history of Yugoslavia and the history of Bosnia. I’m not an expert and there is a fair chance that I have misspoken or missed some nuance. Please feel free to correct me in the comments.

Always a treat to see you review an album from my country or one of my neighbours ( I am from Serbia)
Quick note since you love language: "index" is singular (proper spelling would be indeks) while "indexi" is plural so their name would be "Report cards" not "Report card", and yes we still use them
Your understanding of yugo rock is admirable. I hope you get a chance to read the liner notes to the 2022 reissue of Odbrana before you review it. It's very insightful. Indexi record from your video is a compilation record of their Jugoton singles from 1971 to 1973, although, Plima is a song they actually recorded back in early 1969. Line up wasn't the same on every track on this compilation, although only the current line up from 1975 was credited on the record cover. The band also made recordings for RTB and those were not considered for this compilation and a number of radio only recordings. Perfiljeva was married to Hrvoje Hegedusic, singer songwriter and sound engineer from Zagreb who wasn't a member of Indexi, but wrote music for Sanjam. That song was Indexi entry to Zagreb music festival in 1972. Indexi had another full length compilation in 1972, but it was only on cassette tape. Publisher was RTVLJ. Their RTB singles were compiled a year later in 1973 also only as a cassette tape. Three comps, three labels, one band and all three selftitled :) It's interesting because it included previously unreleased tracks that the band recorded over the years in Radio Sarajevo. Their first and only proper full length was Modra Rijeka in 1978.
Congratulations for the review. This compilation sitting in my collection more than 40 years, no weak moment at all, but is not their best album. Modra Rijeka one and only studio album by Indexi is a masterpiece. Think about it.

If you love Yugoslav music and history I would strongly suggest you watch the movie "Toma 2021". It is about Toma Zdravkovic (one of the greatest exYU musicians) and how he got famous. There are aspects of the story that were changed for story purposes but the background history as well as the singers/bands featured are all real. Toma could also be considered as another version of Djordje Balasevic but more targeted to "Kafansku Publiku" translating roughly to "Pub/Bar Public". As the movie follows Tomas story it also features many other singers who were in the music industry at the same time such as Zdravko Colic, Silvana Armenulić (known as the Queen of Sevdah which is Bosnias traditional music) and many more. If you can find a version with English titles I am sure you will love it enough to make a video about it. It also tells the history of Yugoslavia through background storytelling etc (newspapers, radios, tv news...etc) but it does it through the eyes of an average Yugoslavian and does not promote nationalist rhetoric.

Great video as always. I'm really interested to know your thoughts on more former-Yugoslav bands like Parni Valjak and Crvena Jabuka in the future. The rock scene was so rich and exciting, I'm glad someone in the English-speaking world is talking about it.
Plima was played on Radio Luxembourg. Negdje na kraju u zatisju is my favourite Indexi song. Sarajevo had a good basketball team, KK Bosna, that was the European champion in 1979, plus the Winter Olympics games in 1984. Try the Turkish coffee, not like the crap that they drink in the West. Hey, if you're into Yugoslav rock you should really check out Haustor and Film from Zagreb (Croatian counter-parts of Belgrade's Paket Aranzman crew); optionally also Lacni Franz from Maribor, Slovenia and YU Grupa from Belgrade (their early stuff contemporary with this Indexi record is great, later stuff not so much).
AVAA, great job! I don't know if you have had a chance to listen to the first true Yugoslavian avant rock band Buldozer. Their 1975 album "Pljuni istini u oci" ("Spit in the eye of the truth") is in my opinion the best ex-Yu rock album - it's Zappa + King Crimson + Beefheart +humor

This album is compilation of their single recordings.(Something like "greatest hits")I'm 66 and remember these days with Indexi songs on the radio.They were best part of so called" Sarajevo pop/rock school" in the end of 60's and first part of 70's.
The song "DA SAM JA NETKO" have political/Social mesage wich was not common in these days in YU.My fevor Indexi song was "BALADA" totaly original and autentic with beautiful lyrics.

Great review from a country i was raised in. My mom studied in Sarajevo in the 80s and Indexi are her favourite band. Really hope you're going to like Idoli, because they are my favourite band from that era.
Kornelije Kovač was part of Indexi in 60's, and than formed his own "Korni Grupa" wich was greatest prog-rock YU band.They even made one album on English language in the first part of 70's.

You sholud listen to Modra rijeka, by Indexi. The greatest prog rock album ever recorded, its genius. Its available on YT. Also, fun fact about the album, its a compilation album with greatest Indexi songs from 1967-1974. Modra rijeka is their first real album:)

The same. I live abroad for 15 years now, and when anyone asks me what is my mother tongue, I always say serbo-croatian. Anything else is false
You could use that term during Yugoslavia time but not anymore. I speak Bosnian (Originates from Shtokavian) and I speak the Ijekavian form. These other folks might speak ikavian or ekavian. Once you learn the difference you’ll understand better. Serbs speak Serbian (ekavian form) Croats speak Croatian and some speak ikavian. Read a little. Serb-Croatian doesn’t exist anymore just like Yugoslavia.
Btw ...Popović is great singer with perfect hearing like Sinatra.
The soundtrack of my childhood. Sanjam and Sve Ove Godine were megahits, constantly on the radio, TV etc. The rest of the album's songs were also all very well known by everyone there and then.

Buddy, you are still under the influence of the american aggressive marketing machinery. But for your comfort, there are few (here and there) people in Serbia, that bought that same T shirt from that same aggressive marketing machinery as well. And for my comfort, you at least have very, very good taste in music 🎼🎶🎵, and what I particularly liked, is how deep you go in dissecting the very fabric of the music scene back then. So, props for that. But politically, you are just another one-sided american. You just have to dig deeper, just as you do with the music. Greetings from Serbia... and Serbia is not suburbia! 🥳🥳
There is this one rock album (and only one) released in Romania in 1975, which is so good it makes no sense. It's better than anything Led Zeppelin has ever released, and I'm not being hyperbolic, I'm just trying to approach the quality of this body of work. It's rock but it's of roots and decisions and mysteries that are unique.
This is not going to be something you have ever experienced before, not something you think you could have predicted. Be warned, it will probably become one of your top ten albums of all time.
The drummer is probably the only drummer who's, if not better, at the very least on par with Bonham. The only one. In the world. Bass work is insane, guitar work is very good, the vocal work is exquisite and then there's a plethora of synths and other instruments that are of unpaired vibrancy.
The very existance of this album is so unlikely, such a fluke of an alignment of stars that might only ever happen every big bang cycle that I would like to very emphatically suggest you listen to it and I have no doubt you will want to talk about it.
The album is called "Cantofabule" and the band is called Phoenix. You will feel as if you've discovered not just a bone but a full sized frozen dinosaur, in your back garden, which furthermoreso will turn out upon defreezing not to be a dinosaur at all but instead a damn full health, living firebreeding dragon. Inside an alien space ship. Inside a worm hole into another dimension. Right next to the keys that unlock the misteries of the cosmos. Don't be greedy leave the keys alone but instead listen to this album. It's insanely unlikely double triple wtf good.

I heard about Indexi after I watched the movie Lepa Sela Lepo Gore. A group of Serbian soldiers during the Bosnian War are under siege by a much larger force of Bosniaks. The Bosniaks start playing the song Bacila je sve niz rijeku by Indexi to taunt them. Funny thing is Bacila je sve niz rijeku reminds me a little of the Gary Puckett and the Union Gap song "Over You." It's not really a hard rock song but a kind of power ballad.

The whole issue Serbs have even nowadays is that Serbian culture, history and heritage (like Cyrilics) are repeatedly stigmatized as symbols nationalism and pride (both words can have bad/false connotation). A lot of nationalism and pride on all sides is defensive in nature. I would say it's like Bell's curve. You got 15% fully non-engaged, 15% extremes that start shit, like destroying signs with Cyrilic/Latin alphabets, graveyards and other stuff. Rest just defensively sides with their own side, or tends to condemn other side's extreme more viciously.
edit: the fact that you are comparing Mladic to Nazis (outrageous claim) tells me that you're solely informed by mainstream media on this stuff. Since you're a rnr fan and interested/fascinated by the region consider reading Chomsky's Yugoslavia, David Halberstam's or Michael Mandel's books on war, or watch a documentary like "Srebrenica: A Town Betrayed". There is no way you can get anything resembling balanced take on what happened in these regions in 90s from mainstream narratives.
If you want a balanced take how about you ask the people who survived the horrors of the war and then tell me how the Serbs weren't as bad or even worse than the nazis. Why pretend the Serbs weren't evil and putrid?

There's no american or australian or new zzealendian language lake no bosnian no croatian no macedonian no montenegrian. These are all serbian languages with local specifics. You ignorent westerner made this for your political purpose. Learn history especially serbian and you will see what is all about. You have serbian wife, she should get you in this better than everyone. Only if she is a jugoslavian that will be tipical for serbs, no one from croatian bosnian or else does not fill like, although all of them are serbians in origins
