    Neil does nail how Ellie making that threat of "lie to me and you'll never know my fate", which scared Joel more than the truth, trapped him right there. No matter what he would say, she'd hate him and he knew it. Even the life they built together as father and daughter doesn't take away from the fact he took away an important decision from her, regardless of the circumstances. The worst of it though being that he lied and maintained the lie despite their bond. He dreaded the day but knew somehow he was delaying the inevitable time she would view him with disgust. Even with all that, some part of Ellie still wanted to believe Joel didn't massacre the Fireflies. For he knew she wanted the deaths and choices that got her to the Fireflies be sacrificed for a meaningful purpose: save humanity whatever the cost. For her to dread being proven right about her skepticism adds even more devastation to the both of them.
    This was a very organic painful scene wonderfully executed by the cast and crew.

    I always thought this direction was pretty stupid and made Ellie seem even stupider. You can’t tell me how that at the end of the game Ellie didn’t know Joel was bullshitting her, you could literally see it in her eyes. She didn’t want to lose what she gained in Joel, she witnessed first hand how awful the remnants of humanity could be and seeing a flicker of compassion she grasped to keep it. They could have gone with the direction that she didn’t want to believe it but couldn’t deny the truth any longer but they didn’t.

    So, to anyone who has watched the Closer Look's video on this game, you'll know what I'm talking about:
    The revised version of this game is better when it comes to this plotline. Ellie, later in this hypothetical story, gets another chance to offer her life up to a doctor who can make a vaccine with her immunity- and she hesitates. At that moment, she realizes that she never considered what her choice would be if it was her choice. And that is the turning point in her relationship with Joel, that's how she starts to forgive him.
    I think that's way better than how it was in the real game.

    • @SaberRexZealot
      @SaberRexZealot Před 3 měsíci +3

      The Closer Look’s version would be awful. It reads like bad fan-fiction with a bunch of contrivances and schlocky moments, especially the stupid evil general character and Ellie calling Joel dad. Just no. And he has the most surface level takes of all the other content he reviews. The Dune video he deleted was a great example of how botched that story would’ve been if he wrote it

    • @fredselvaggio1435
      @fredselvaggio1435 Před 3 měsíci +2

      That’s stupid. 1 just finding another doctor would be extremely difficult and a big stretch for a dumb moment because 2, Ellie would have 100% sacrificed herself, as she made extremely clear throughout part 2

  • @matchewyourfood6232
    @matchewyourfood6232 Před 4 měsíci +11

    I just don't buy into anything in this game. This scene took place 2 years before Joel died and before Ellie and Joel had their conversation on the porch where she said she would like to try and forgive him. We're supposed to buy, that Ellie (in 2 years), did not talk to Joel and avoided him?? She had no other questions?? Didn't want to fully understand what happened and what he did? No questions about Marlene? (Who was basically a 2nd mother to Ellie in the first game).
    They finally have their conversation on the porch (again, 2 years after this scene at the hospital) where she expresses how she feels and Joel says he would do it all over again. Then, the next day he gets brutally murdered by Abby? It just makes no sense.
    Ellie is an emotional person. And we see this in the first game. An example would be how she wants to talk about what happened with Henry and Sam (Joel pushes the idea away by saying "Things happen, and we move on") and they dont discuss it.
    Point being, Ellie would have wanted more here. And their conversation on the porch heavily implies that they did not speak about any of it since this scene at the hospital where Joel comes clean.
    Make it make sense. The writing in TLOU2 is a mess.

    • @kush6846
      @kush6846 Před 4 měsíci +32

      I don’t think the game needs to over explain things to get its point across, like her breaking down outside the hospital after she realizes what Joel did, I think we can assume that she knows Marlene is dead. That moment in the aftermath where they discuss Henry and Sam is an example of Joel compartmentalizing his feelings and shutting Ellie down, gaslighting her, something that he does in this game in certain scenes.
      This confrontation outside the hospital and her last conversation w/ Joel on his porch puts everything into perspective. When Joel is killed, it becomes clear to Ellie that she wasted those last few remaining years resenting and ignoring him because of the incident w/ the fireflies. Ellie’s revenge mission was fueled by her guilt in not forgiving him sooner and making amends while he was still alive. I think when Ellie finds Abby in the pillars w/ Lev, she gets to see firsthand a lot of Joel in Abby, the protector who grew and had a change of heart because of a kid, something that I think influenced her decision in letting her go.

      @@kush6846 I think you well explained the EMOTIONAL part of the scene but unfortunately this should never exist in that way... it sad that the writers crate this only for emotional part for Ellie and and ignore all the logical errors with the paicing/characters decisions of the story and fast traveling issue + too many coincidences (in all the game) and it's one of them... for me it's one of the most unbelievable scene simply by LOGIC: Ellie by age 16 traveling ALONE by herself knowing her past experiences of being kidnaped; potentially raped and killed again; RISK it all and go from Jackson to St. Mary's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah so it's around 280 miles/450km (x 2 because the characters need go back to Jackson) is a major fast traveling/paicing issue - the danger is gone when in part I it was hard to get here; seems like Ellie is well prepared herself and magically knows the map of the world and find that place without 0 errors; have infinite access to the food etc.); so the probability of Ellie not being in any danger in that kind of travel is bothering me because in my opinion it's more believable that guy who was hit with the light 7 times will be hit again then this event xD + 2 x because moment's latter Joel show's up and magically finds her (at this point that travel could be major 1-2h part of the game but it was only like a 2-5 min. cut scenes but it still doesn't make sense in my opinion) and of course the writers used him here with the sad face and he didn't bother to explain a shit just "the cure would killed you so I stopped them" - well it's miss opportunity for Joel to expelling what happened from A [Ellie drowning] to Z [lied to Ellie] and what he's done and how he felt and why he lied to her (at least latter in the game we have scene with him that he would do it all over again if the lord give him a chance hehe)... the events before that: that she finds Nora recording and listening about what happened from Nora perspective is a major issue of pacing and coincidence that it's Nora that we killed before this scene (I could be wrong here but I remembered it that way that was Nora voice on the recording)... 2nd problem that this place after 2 years was empty and the recording was magically there just waiting for Ellie (this place should be on FEDRA possession or be full with the fungus-zombie being)... 3rd that this scene impaling that she wanted be sacrificed for the cure but she is not realizing that Marlene and Jerry were the ones that took that chance from her by simply not waking her up and Joel was in "protecting daughter" mod because it goes back to Joel not telling her what happened so she's mad at him and blame him for everything - because the writers need an drama between Ellie/Joel to make part II in their mind "work"... hehe I'm curios now if this scene will happening in TV series; if the showrunners have minds they at least will change the location to delete fast-traveling and coincidence issue hehe xD
      Have a nice day :)

    Meh. The only reason Joel went on a rampage and killed Abbys father was because they refused to let him talk to Ellie before the procedure, then told him to leave or hed be killed. If tjeyd let Ellie make her own decision they wiuldnt have been murder hoboed. And Abby is a trash person. There's no arc, no guilt or remorse, just bites Wlliea finger and is like "Oh let me raise my trans sodekick now"
    Druckman doesnt lay ground work. The cjaracters just do what he meeds to move the plot. the show adaptation really highlighted that.

    • @soccutd77
      @soccutd77 Před 4 měsíci +6

      Abby is a trash person just like Ellie is a trash person just like Joel, just like Marlene, just like Abby’s father. That’s the point. Abby’s journey absolutely mirrors Joel’s. Joel has killed a lot of innocent people-even Tommy says he wishes he’d rather died than have survived with Joel. Once he picks up Ellie, there’s no remorse for his past actions, but there is a sort of redemption. The same thing happens for Abby. They’re survivors in this apocalyptic world-guilt or remorse simply slows them down, or prevents them from protecting who they need to.

      @soccutd77 yeah. but its motivation, which is why we still talk about it. I played single and again as a parent. I feel of Marlene had let Ellie wake up and talk to Joel he'd have let her do it, it was the taking her away and threatening him that did it. And lying to her, yiu can see it as selfish or just wanting her to have a life, not feeling she needed to die. it's a little of both, but that nuance is what made the whole last hospital scene amazing. and the doctor really should have stepped back not pulled a scalpel at an unstable guy with like 10 weapons. 2 has none of that ambiguity. I see what they were trying for, but character wise it plays very cut and dry

    • @_sir_reginald
      @_sir_reginald Před 3 měsíci +4

      @@mr.eternal4439- Ellie has low self-esteem and survivor's guilt as well as guilt from being immune. Her bite mark is like a tainted mark that she has immense trouble making sense of esp as an orphaned child who has never known unconditional love from a parent before. All these people died and continue to die around her (from infection and the world) and some even died for her. Her default way of processing that is shame
      So while yes you are correct, the "logical" thing would be to move, the reality of things is usually much harder to navigate.
      I say all this as a former therapist and mental health care worker. The pain, grief, and shame that people carry with them is nothing to scoff at. But it should always be respected cuz the pain usually carries deep lessons of love and growth. In other words, if they can manage, the trauma can help folks reach their highest selves.
