No Leaders Please by Charles Bukowski

- 🔰It's a bit depressing the fact that Bukowski needs to convince us that our lives belong to us with his writing. This poem is personal to me and I hope I did it justice with my humble movie. In the movie, I appear due to the lack of professional actors and the other person is a really close friend of mine (not an actor) that allowed me to film him and he also filmed himself some of the shots I used. Even though I told him that thousands of people would see this movie he gave me complete freedom to do whatever I wanted with his footage, this isn't an easy thing to do and I respect it a lot. I tried new things this time I'm aware of it, I always accept negative feedback but I won't allow freedom of speech to turn into the freedom of cruelty. Creativity is allowing yourself to make mistakes and art is know which ones to keep, I hope this poem finds you well.

No Leaders Please
invent yourself and then reinvent yourself,
don’t swim in the same slough.
invent yourself and then reinvent yourself
and
stay out of the clutches of mediocrity.
invent yourself and then reinvent yourself,
change your tone and shape so often that they can
never
categorize you.
reinvigorate yourself and
accept what is
but only on the terms that you have invented
and reinvented.
be self-taught.
and reinvent your life because you must;
it is your life and
its history
and the present
belong only to
you.
Do you live your life?
We don't live we just exist .
illneas I just started being alive in October since before that...well...I was sleep walking with mental health issues.
I was just thinking about this last week or so. Most of us are just dying rather than living. Every day closer to our deaths.
More so with all the hate and the climate change. (-_-)
P.S.: I don't actually answer your question though. :P
It’s not easy being awake in a world that wants you to sleep
I live on autopilot eventually there will be reason to leave it but for now there's no point to stop.
Illneas: How much Bukowski you need?
Me: Yes
This is such a BIG MOOD lmao
Bukowski is best for us. He is only one we need.
Hahahahahaha 😍
Me too.
But but... Buckowski said what we need is less Buckowski 🤔🤔
"Stay out of the clutches of mediocrity." -truer words never spoken.
Fav line.
What if we belong to them ! Just not meant to be exceptional
Yes, and I love how it has zero to do with success. Something which most people would struggle with. It's more about giving your life a meaning and following that path as far as you can rather than the superficial reward of wealth or adoration that may or may not come with it 👍
The voice of the narrator lends so much to the piece.
he is tom o'bedlam he also has a youtube channel; Spoken Verse
@@zeberced8634 Thank you.
Steve Sayewich its nothing man
luffeN Thankyou chap
Tom Bedlam is a gift to all of us.
When you hear the narrator's voice, it's not just the self that's listening but the soul.
Oh my , I couldn't agree more ; This isn't just a poem , it's an experience .
Beautifully put.
I'm old. Not easily impressed. However, every time you deliver something new it appears effortless but so close to genius I can't begin to describe it. I don't give a damn if I sound excessive. I love this artist. For personal reasons, I cried & cried by the end. This piece of art means so much to me in so many ways. I hope it reaches down to something so profound that it makes your heart ache & then scream for joy, my fellow viewers. You are alive. Thank you, illneas. Thank you. Thank you. Thank you. Bukowski is probably one of the best poets who ever lived and I am sad that we never are going to get another person like him
God bless you sir and I whole heartedly agree "what we need is MORE Bukowskis" dare I say it 😂 hope you see this and have a happy, stress free life all your remaining days on this earth
He wasn't a poet and his drunken ramblings were mostly dismal, dreary and depressing thoughts about himself.
@@Lili-Benovent so a poet
@@nielsdekker452 Yes and my worst poetry is far better than the ego driven drivel that Bukowski wrote.
FOREVER LOST - Lili
I sat upon a lonely beach, watched the gulls and crabs devour
The remains of one large man, no clothes, no eyes, one hand
As I enjoyed the morning sun, the waves had washed him clean
I lazed there for a little while and then began to dream
And wondered of his story, his sad demise upon the sand. -
I slowly woke when day had cooled and found I wasn’t alone
A Spectre sat at my right side and smiled at my surprise
I was a wanderer he said, a Tramp, a Sailor wild
And I pray the sea will take me and scatter all my bones
I’ll tell the story of my murder, no profit now in lies
For I was just a Gypsy, stolen from my tribe as child. -
Sunken deep within the mire of crime, four lads with time to kill
And kill we did whenever, we found the chance of coin
The guilty and the innocent, none spared or conscience felt
The hand of Satan on my shoulder, the tempest in my loins
But treachery’s around us all and treachery was dealt
When I stole within the clan, a wench I didn’t own.-
I lost my eyes, I lost my hand, I’m destined now to roam
The lonely shore for evermore, no life, no friends, no hand
He wandered back to where his form lay rotting on the sand
Sometimes I hear a wailing, from that Spectre in the foam
He cannot see, he can’t be free, his anger, hate demand
The death of any stranger who happens by his home. -
The beach looks so inviting for swimmers to its shore
Currents deep and fast, take the unwary to the deep
Every Summer takes its toll, the Spectre calls for more
The warning signs upon the sand only tempt the brave
Dragged out to sea among the fish, reward eternal sleep
There’ll be no sleep for the vagabond, the sand his lonely grave.
Over the last year this poem changed my life. I listen to it as often as I can.
I'm honored to be a part of that transformation. Keep going
These videos are some of the most beautiful things on youtube. They're so intuitively human and experiential, and above all, they have so much character!! There are few films/short films that have the capability to make such a huge impact with so little time, and my dude you are doing a great job :))
I'm blushing, thank you for your kinds words. As an amateur filmmaker these comments mean the world to me.
Experimental*
@@neutralfog I meant experiential lol
I'm glad I'm not the only one that thinks they've hit gold on CZcams. Far from, by the looks of things!😁You described illneas' art quite wonderfully. Experientially, experimentally or even existentially (just teasing), great wording! See you around the channel again, Tarini. Best wishes.

Just recently discovered him/his work and i'm in owe! amazing, genius!
That's what life means.. To continuously find meaning in the mundane... To learn to disassemble ourselves and forge something new out of us..
Your cinematography managed to capture the essence.. It was beautiful ❤
Thank for standing alongside me in this journey, I tried to give my everything in this poem. Glad you liked it.

Bukowski's poem, narrator's voice, background sounds and the photography are just feel me another way ❤💜
I decided to put in notice at my job after listening to this, I shared this poem with my team in my farewell email. This is one of the most inspiring poems I can relate to.
Bukowski, Masterful, Genius.
Would love to see you read some of his short stories. My favorites are “The most beautiful woman in in town” “The Blanket” “ Would you suggest writing as a career”
“ Animal Crackers in my Soup”
These are immortal. And lend themselves to your great voice.
All love in isolation from Miami Beach,

A writer who wrote the truth 😍, well the way he put his words into poem just so relatable
This video is amazing. You made a piece of art. The scenes are good, the editing is good, the music is good, and with O'Bedlam's voice the result is just incredible.
Thank you so much, it means a lot coming that from you.
I had to work on this poem during online english class. My teacher send us this link to hear the poem. Sadly I can*t remmember when it was, but I was as fascinated as I'm now, when I saw this video and heard the poem. Both thouch me somewhere deep inside me.
So thank you, my english teacher.

I was just searching your channel for this one the other day. One of my favourites. Excellent work.
Thank you
I’m doing a speech on The Handmaid’s Tale for my Honors English class, and I’m glad that I came across this, because I can use lines from this poem to develop that theme of individuality, of not letting someone slap a label on you and put you in a box saying ‘this is what you are’. Of inventing and reinventing yourself, finding yourself, being yourself, breaking the mold. Thank you for making this, I am forever appreciative. I’ll be revisiting this again.
I love these videos. Excellent tribute to the poems of Bukowski.
I love this poem and your images. Perfect match!📸
This is the best poem I've ever read. It speaks to my true self.
Thanks man for all your videos. They are inpiring and I'm truly thankfull for that!
Oh my god! This seems a song one needs to listen to on loop!💞
I hope he has grandsons, with that voice he should be the best story-teller. Thank you
Brilliant!
No other word for it.
The reader (or voice interpreter for Mr. Bukowski) is Tom o'Bedlam is equally brilliant.
He brings Bukowski's words to life and kicks you right square in the ass with the truth of his words. 👏👏👏
This one has really hit home... Damn! Thank you 😃😃😃
Beautifully shot, you have a wonderful eye and a real gift to match words and imagery.
Stunningly amazing !!
These videos are great, Genius of the Crowd is probably my favourite. Bukowski would have enjoyed these, I think.
All these poems are so beautiful and powerful and I love them so muccchhhh
wow what a mind of wisdom. Just new to your channel and find it refreshing, deep and reflects life.
Didn't expect to see my city in one of your videos!
Congrats to you and your friend.

Thank you ^^
Please make these poems available on Spotify too. And i love your work illneas. Thank you. ♥️
Sharing this with my beautiful friend, Courtney this morning.
So encouraging.
Thank you.
Whoa! This is the story of my life. I am so glad that i found Bukowski.
I love this piece of gristle, this hard to digest but truthful old cote.
These words have such a great meaning to so many of us. But you owned it.made it yours. Was it exactly as any of us would have done? Absolutely not. That’s the beauty! I can say I would do this instead but appreciate what you did. And the next person would see, hear, something totally different. And now I’m rambling...Great Job! Don’t worry if a couple people don’t appreciate your art. Because most of us are thankful for it.
Thank you Andrew for the support, as an amateur filmmaker it means a lot to me.
illneas It’s my pleasure. I’m just thankful to have found your channel. And once again thanks for sharing your art with us.
“This is your life”… words from my daughter concerning major life issues… I wanted to interrupt interject information interfere but she is right this is my life but at 22… evil roams freely and I must change adjust but I’ve tried to help her and she will be alright…she is so much wiser than I was at 22… she will be alright…
Absolutely stunning! ♥
😁
I'm gonna leave everything behind if I keep listening to Bukowski's words narrated by this dude Tom O Bedlam.
Thank you for this
Allah gifted talented unique voice! His voices give any poetry another energetic force which mesmerized me, everytime I listen his recitation. Incredible! Bravo!
Nice individual piece of work. Bringing together this poem
of Bukowski (which I did not get to know until now - thanks though)
and some work of filming that wasn't actually planned for this
it kind of left a good impression
in my sensual realisation. I think this kind of art, bringing together poetry
and shortfilm or collage or whatever
became more popular in time of the last decade...not mainstream, which has importance to me. Keep the art of self-teaching in your heart, don't
throw it away. Thank you for a thing
that represents more than electricity in an mobile phone...
Thank man, you last line hits hard, I really appreciate it.
Tom Bedlam really did a good job on narrating all of the poems. His voices really reaches deeply inside me, unlike today, people tend to read poems with too much emotions, causing the audiences to bore easily for there is lack of rationality and deep understanding upon the writings that have been written. I wish Tom O Bedlam could read my poems too🤣 Btw, i like your vids @illneas. Your making art more beautiful
We should invent life more often, our life. Then reinvent it:) This art that you are creating is truly beautiful.
I love the narrator, very palpable.
This touched my soul deeply
Speechless.
Damnnn!! this is so beautiful 🌹
Huge love from an student who lives in India💛
I read this poem when I doubt myself and what I can do
so moving.
thanks you for your movie, sir. I'll check it out.
Amazing job!
Amazing 🙌🏻
Holy shit. I needed this wake up call of some sort. I've been struggling to find a job that's good enough and I keep saying it's never meant to be. Maybe all I do need is to reinvent myself. This (me) doesn't work.
Your channel is gold!
I love this work. However this version really sounds like one of the tapes from the Saw movies ngl. Still, it's a perfect piece and the visuals were great. Massive respect to the creator.
Awesome poem! Perfect wisdom. #InPoetry
Dope video bro💪🏽
I feel like your close friend did an excellent job
My only problem with Bukowski is that he wrote too many beautiful pieces of poems and my shitty brain cannot remember them all. I feel like I recognize the iconic lines of "invent yourself and then reinvent yourself" but I should probably dig out Google to find out from which book this line was.
And your pinned message was: Do you live your life?
I absolutely hate it. Because it makes me realize I just go with the flow and not really try to live mine. I work and I get paid and then what? What is life for me?
A jumbled madness that I'm still trying to figure out, apparently. I haven't invented myself. Who am I? Who will know, if it's not me? So I guess I couldn't answer your question yet, because I don't know whose life I live now.
Kudos to your friend, for both his availability to star in this video as an absolute gift for this footage. You are awesome.
Side note, as always, I'm baffled, how could you choose perfect music to go with every poem narration. How did you do it?
I have a weird music taste, but somehow I make the right choices with these videos.
gave me chills
All your videos are like really good intros to Hollywood blockbusters. They're like Christopher Nolan style
I love this voice man🔥
You did great !
These are always painful to me
Are you growing as a person at least from his poems ?
I think so. I hope so. Its so hard to tell sometimes
Perfect presentation.
Thank you.
I just love you, can't believe I found such an amazing discovery on CZcams finding you like this ...
Wow that's so nice of you, thank you for watching my work. ^^
@@illneas am telling no ps , you're voice is a gift use it to the fullest you can do sooo much with it , the sky is the limit for you , radio, commercials , voice overs , animation, story telling and books reading etc .. if I had any business in any of those I would hire you in a heart beat .
