DISSING MY EX | Response to “Congratulations” by Pewdiepie & Boyinaband

- This is for anyone let down by Boyinaband’s collab with Pewdiepie. It also happened to be the most painful personal betrayal I’ve ever experienced.
I’m calling out Boyinaband for prioritising his subscriber growth over doing what’s right.
The fact that the racism in “Congratulations” is insidious, rather than blatant, and the platforming of a vocal transphobe is legitimised simply by omission, may make it difficult to immediately see what is so wrong with it. In my opinion, that makes its potential for harm far greater.

I don’t know who this will reach, if anyone. I imagine those likely to listen will already have ditched Boyinaband and won’t go within a mile of Pewdiepie. But after seeing those videos, this response came up near-uncontrollably. Like vomit. I’ll be damned if I’m not going to throw it out there in the hope that the sheer grossness of it gets through to one or two.
It does seem iffy to write an entire song slagging off India with someone who platformed Ben Shapiro and not mention a single line of it to the brown trans person you’re supposedly dating. (When his video dropped the relationship officially ended.)
Context as to how a degenerate leftist and “edgy” fuckegg became friends: prior to meeting David I knew next to nothing about CZcams. By the time I really understood what was going on, he'd disappeared out of contact, citing depression as the cause, making it difficult to talk to him at all, let alone address my concerns. That and, ya know, he’s a big old CZcamsr with millions of followers and I’m some no-one he happened to be into.
Since I wrote this, Dan Bull put his parody song out. While it's clear the blanking treatment isn’t just reserved for people like me, the power difference between plebeians in relationships with rich influential fuckos, with the responsibility lying with the latter to be conscious and considerate of that dynamic, remains an issue worth raising in its own right.
There may have been no malicious intent in the making of “Congratulations”. That doesn’t excuse gross negligence and irresponsibility.
Onto the video.
The “caste system,” line is the one that stands out as A. Irrelevant, B. Arrogant, and C. No different in many ways to the UK. I actually LIKE some boundary pushing when it comes to humour - trouble is, this isn’t humorous. It’s a genuine criticism of a historically oppressed country coming from a white man at the top of his own privilege pyramid. With no context for it in the video itself, the line is totally out of place - not to mention othering, condescending, and by extension, low-key actually racist.
Newsflash: Stating self-awareness in a separate disclaimer video doesn’t somehow make it ok. Even with the explanation provided for those who do see it, the irrelevance of the line being deliberate, it’s still… irrelevant? What’s their point?
I tried to find one and couldn’t: the only explanation is that they’re simply using the fact that it’s an Indian channel to shit on the country. Might not be the most serious racism in the world, but that’s undeniably what it is - and what IS serious is the knock-on effect that it has by opening the doors for allowing the more harmful stuff to flourish.
I get the point about individual vs. corporation, though I have zero interest since it’s clear the motivation here was just to get views/fling shit in the pan.
I’d add that this is a weird example of an underdog. Pewdiepie is a powerful white man who virtually represents the dominance of patriarchy, white supremacy, and western 'culture’. Never had one of those running the joint before! But sure, let’s resent the rising influence and power of the global south - specifically a country that used to be a British colony.
Also just - PEWDIEPIE. Even now he keeps bleating “I’m not racist,” while uh, being racist, signalling to fascists, giving the alt-right a free pass on his channel, and going “it got out of control” in response to what’s happening - like his own repeated misconduct has had nothing to do with it.
Even if we assume he isn’t an alt-right sympathiser just for arguments’ sake, he remains someone who, granted, sometimes admits to his mistakes - then carries on making them. Then asks other people to stop what he started, like it's their fault instead of his. This is not what being a decent person is; it’s just inching back from being a blatantly shitty one.
The Overton window is a lot further to the right than I ever could have imagined, if most people can’t see that.
Including David Brown. To me, it does seem that he used to have a moral compass, but has been steadily breaking it along the way in favour of anything that will get him more attention. Perhaps there’s still hope that he’ll turn around. That or next he’ll start up an incel protection society.

How is Congratulations transphobic though?
I think one crucial point people are missing in this comment section is the line about depression. Shonalika isn't making fun of him having depression, they're pointing out how he seems to have used depression as a means of justifying his behaviour. Depression is extremely hard to live with, but it is not an excuse for acting shitty or ignoring somebody's concerns about issues that affect their daily life. People also seem to have overlooked the subsequent line about Shonalika being hospitalised while Boyinaband ignored them, which contrasts the previous line about using depression as an excuse.
Nowadays everyone says they have depression when they are just being assholes to garner sympathy
I have depression. I am still responsible for the choices I make, because those choices have outcomes and repercussions. Maybe it's unfair of me to hold others to that same standard, but it feels patronizing not to.

No, general consensus of CZcams audience at that time was that indian channel taking Over white youtuber is some sort of great reolacement and masses werent willing to listen. honestly as someone with clinical depression, depressed people can be fucking assholes and it's important to recognise that your mental illness is never an excuse
yes, it can be hard to be a good person when you're depressed, but you still need to take responsibility for it, because it is completely unfair to try and excuse yourself for shitty (and sometimes toxic/abusive) behaviour, because whether or not you're mentally ill the consequences are just as real and damaging to those around you

After what happened to Kwite, we should all think twice before believing something with zero evidence. Real quick: Shonalika uses they/them pronouns, misgendering them just indicates that you don't actually have much care or respect for them as a person. Also, if you want context for what exactly prompted this particular video, read the description.
I find it odd that some people in this comments section are fixating on the personal details and separating them from the more political points. To me, this video doesn't come off as focusing on either of those aspects of Dave's character exclusively; it's a broader picture of a person illustrated by specific personal experiences. I think sometimes people get caught up in thinking of being racist or being a bad person as a neatly tied up state of being. It's a pattern of behavior.
I think at least one of the benefits of sharing such personal stories is to show what Dave is like as a person, as a partner, as a friend, behind the scenes and after the camera cuts. As a viewer, I wouldn't know what he says to those close to him unless those people speak up about it publicly. So I, as a viewer, can make a more informed decision of whether or not I want to support his content.
I know that depression can lead to socially withdrawing and losing capacity and/or motivation to do things previously much more possible. I've experienced that, as have most of my friends. And when each of us hits a depressive episode, we don't use that to justify reinforcing harmful narratives against each other. But that isn't what this was. Shonalika made an interesting point in the description about the way that power, privilege, and platforms can play a role in relationships between influencers. The two of them did not start on an even playing field and as the one with the upper hand, it falls on Dave to even that playing field. Which he did not do.
And yeah, some parts of this come off pretty vindictive, and I think if I was in the hospital and my partner didn't so much as text me, I would be feeling pretty fuckin vindictive. This video isn't meant to be devoid of emotion or "objective". It's very clear (to me at least) that this is about the way that public, politicized displays can double as personal betrayals. And that is, in fact, in the first two lines of the description. The rest of which gives a lot more context and explanation of the situation leading up to this video.
I could probably write an entire essay about this video but instead I'll leave it at that. Thanks for reading and I hope you have a wonderful day :)

For the record, I'm aware depression sucks and it can make you irritable and not up for a lot of communication, but if your SO is in the hospital you should say something to them. Depression is not a get out of consequences free card, you're still responsible for how you treat others.

I have seen both sides of the story and gotta be honest shonalika is out of bounds calling Dave and pewds racist based off one song proven and explicitly said to be a meme and joke which is essentially all of PewDiePie's content except for the few games he plays I think this is just them and many others reading way to deep into a joke and not realizing it is no deeper than the surface level of a house
The problem with the "It's just a joke" argument is that it's a very convenient excuse to hide behind when you do or say something that upsets someone else. As the ones not effected by their own words, Pewds and Dave don't get to say "haha, this racist rhetoric is just a joke so you can't be upset or offended even though it closely parallels real things said to and about you and people like you in real life."
If something you're saying isn't used against YOU or a minority YOU belong to, it isn't okay to use that rhetoric or language because you don't know or understand the pain it causes the people who are actually effected every day by it. Saying "It's just a joke" deflects any blame that would be placed on a person for saying something hurtful about others under a guise of not "really" meaning it. Regardless of if they meant it, they said it, and their words carry weight. Dave, being a rapper who uses his words to convey messages, should understand this better than most. The "It's just a joke" mentality needs to stop being a tool people hide behind to avoid taking responsibility for their words and actions. You can make fun of your own life experiences and that's fine, but making fun of groups you don't belong to isn't okay and we should stop treating it like it is.

@@Shonalika Look, I'm not one to attack people. All I'll say is I don't quite see the reason to hate Felix. I've watched him for multiple years now. I'm not saying he's perfect. All I know is that he never meant to hurt anyone. He's made mistakes, we all make them. However, when you're that popular it is very easy for things like that to be blown out of proportion. This video will end up being huge, one way or another. There are people that will be as unfair to you as they can often be to him. You honestly don't deserve hate, but I know you'll likely end up getting it. Although I do not agree with you... The music is pretty cool if I'm being honest.
Case in point, it's rare that somebody wants to hurt somebody else. Felix didn't want to seem racist. In fact, he ended the subscribe to pewdiepie to try and prevent anything bad from happening and then being blamed on him. I can only imagine how he feels. Everyone takes things out of proportion, it's how it is.
Essentially, my point is that it's easy to be upset at somebody. It's easy to hurt somebody by mistake. I'm sure that Dave himself wasn't trying to hurt you either. Now, I only recently started watching him, admittedly, but I really do like his content and he definitely doesn't seem like the person to fuckin somebody over like that.

I'm aware pewdiepie ended the movement - but I thought his doing so was entirely devoid of any actual responsibility taken for WHY such people have chosen to associate with him. This isn't something that inevitably happens to all people over a certain subscriber count. If he really doesn't have alt-right sympathies, he needs to address that, not keep feeding into it.
I've gone into more detail on this in the description. It still doesn't quite cover everything, but I'd have to do several more videos in order to do that and other people have already done that more effectively.

To be honest I like that shonalika is being honest about how they feel instead of what dan did. Dan makes allusions to being uncomfortable with the way the diss tracks are handled in regards to the way they 'diss' Indians but seems to feel like it's the same as your friend preferring a different flavour and as such continues to want to be friends with him. I think the other thing is just that I for one am glad to know there were people around Dave who told him their honest thoughts and he ignored them for his own gain and it's not that he's uninformed, but willfully ignorant.

Nah, not really. It was always clear that he was just friends with Felix because they happened to be the two biggest Swedish CZcamsrs and there was a kinship between them as a result.
